The Daly Cherrygraph

So this is what p!sses me off.. I'm not defending dce as at times he has come across as greedy, so not gonna get into that..

What I will get into is this... In 2008, an absolute club legend came out and said he wants one more year at manly, Im not ready to retire yet.. What happened? Manly said sorry, but we have young guys in choc, Brett and Glenn and matai that we need to sure up and can't afford to keep you.. That was Steve Menzies.. And what did he do? He took himself to England and played until he was 40, all the while being a class act and not once, bagged the club he loved, and not once bagged the players who took the cash that forced him out...

I loved choc, and Glenn, and Brett and matai, but when it was their turn to get moved on in their latter years, they acted like petulant little b!tches.. (Barr Glenn).. Bagging the club in the media, bagging the players they made way for, or just ignoring the fans and the club and washing their hands of manly... Just my opinion, but 20/20 hindsight on my side, if I had the choice, ide go back to 08, p!ss off the lot of them (Barr Glenn), and keep Menzies til he was 40... Even if it cost us 2011..

Just my opinion..
Couldn't have said it better!

Definitely worth a watch. A very frank interview from Willie. He doesn't hold back about DCE and what has happened to Manly. As he says, the culture at Manly has changed dramatically in the last few years. Manly expect to be a top 8 team and with the calibre of players they have, they should be in the top 8. Players don't want to play with DCE and this makes it difficult to to recruit players to Manly.

Tough times ahead.
Just a quick question, how does Mason know the culture has changed dramatically? Was he there during the golden era? Or is he just being a mouthpiece for people like Watmough. He was with us for what? 2 years? And it certainly wasn't a golden era. And if the culture changed in that period........

Is it that extraordinary? Given QLD would prefer to pick a guy that had been playing Intrust Super Cup weeks earlier over Evans says it all really. Our management were clueless in signing Evans up. He is toxic, has no real affection for the colours and deserves every bit of the scrutiny directed toward him.

Us supporters have been blindly loyal to him for far too long, and in the end, we will be left dissapointed. We can say what we like about like about Choc, but that guy played his guts out for us.

There were a number of us saying at the time to let him go. Maloney and Sezer were available, we could have built nicely with those guys. Instead, our dumbass management signed up a 1.3 million dollar dud who is not worth half that. He lacks heart and creates division. Not surprising that a number of players came out in Hastings defence is it?
Um..he has played origin before. No reported issues at all. Once he backflipped on th Titans, after serious media bashing led by Tallis suddenly no one in Queensland wanted Cherry to play for origin. This really doesn't take rocket Science to figure out.
Fact is, early in his career none of the QLD teams would sign Cherry so Manly signed him as a junior.
I live here. It's a Queensland mentality. They think they're from a unique society that is separate from Australia. They live in a bubble. Regardless of his form and constant negative media, Manly supporters should not attack the man's character which you know nothing about, except what the masses choose to believe. Be a free thinker.
Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds - Albert Einstein

Tiresome reading comments from posters that suggest that people with a contrary view should support some other team or they call the poster an insulting name. Its poor form and it's unnecessarily making the discussion personal. So play the ball not the man. We are all suffering this season so lets not turn on one another.

I fail to see how Evans has encountered the kind of violent opposition that Einstein would be referring too? Regardless, I was initially a supporter of his however, over time, I have come to have little regard for him. I think his character is there for all to see and it further hi-lights why Qld will not select him. It is his inability to acknowledge fault, insincerity and attitude that fails to inspire. While I agree that some of our former players, who put in hard for our club, are tarnishing themselves by the vulgarity of their comments, I do both see and empathise with where they're coming from.
DCE is well aware of the fact that his playing years are when he will earn his money so he wants every cent he thinks he deserves. Manly were willing to give it to him. Players that took less to be loyal and all that - good on them but that's their own decision and they can't put that on other people.

But when you are questioning his character, think about what are you actually questioning. Someone that is putting setting up his family for life above his loyalty to his team mates? I'd do the same every day of the week.

What are you on about? Are you launching your own extraordinary attack - it was a quote!

Manly were plain dumb.

Your point is a more than valid one except for one problem; he is in a team sport environment, and as captain of a club that has a rich history. If he has chosen the short window of professional sport as solely his vehicle to 'setting up his family' I again question his character. He could move into a trade as a plumber, estate agent, truckie or accountant. Those people work hard in fields to look after their families, minus being a club captain of an entity, that means so much to us as an inspiration and point of happiness.
I'm not sure I get your point. If you are a highly talented athlete with an opportunity to earn a lot of money using those talents, why would you put that aside to take up a trade paying a fraction of that?

Remember - "setting up". This isn't his whole earning potential for life, but instead a rare opportunity that he has to create a large pool of wealth in a short period. The fact a bunch of grumpy old guys who were nearing the end of their careers didn't get along with him is hardly surprising. They all thought they had years of football left and quickly learned when they left that this was not the case. Now they are bitter. A bitter old fool is not the best character witness for the person that took their place.

Ok, so because I have an a view contrary to yours, I need to find another club to follow? I need to dissolve my support of Manly, a club which I have loved and supported for 35 years, because you feel affronted? Seriously, your dialogue resembles elements from parts of our management, both past and present. Pathetic.

However, for the sake of variety, let's assume you're right regarding Watmough. By your appraisal, are you then suggesting that Cherry-Evans is dedicated and committed to our colours? If so, you are the delusional one.
Mate, all i can say is that we agree to disagree, however we have only won four games this year and you seem to be putting the blame squarely on DCE'S shoulders, and sure with only four wins you'd hardly be expecting him to be setting the world on fire.
His non selection in S of O is a political one

No, I was simply referring to the reference, no attack at all. I am simply sharing on this forum, my own opinion of Evans. No malice or hatred, just my observations of a guy that I feel lets our jersey down. Is that ok?
Of course it's OK.

I believe the truth lies somewhere in the middle. There is no doubt that DCE is polarising, and there is no doubt that his threat to not turn up to training (if true) showed a lack of integrity and respect for the team and fans, not to mention a fair degree of immaturity, something his manager no doubt took advantage of. I also believe that a $50k contract for a premiership winning half is a joke, yes he signed it prior to the season and that is fine; however, Manly should have re-evaluated it anyway to cut it off at the pass and offer Daly $250k. Choc did play his guts out and was a large reason for our success as of course were all of the big five (Jamie, Brett, Glenn, Steve and Choc); however, Choc caused plenty of grief off field and was no angel.

Phil Gould said on a podcast that when a player plays well above their contract value - they will proactively speak with them and upgrade their contract to show good faith and give them what they are worth. Now they won't be shy in kicking someone to the curb if they fail; however, it does go both ways - or at least it should. Manly could have managed the situation better - got on the front foot, offered $250k upscaled over time. Instead they didn't and the manager went for the throat and won.

In my view both Cherry and Manly could have handled it better. I get why Choc and co were dirty, and that is fair enough; however, the media and other detractors are all jumping on the hate train and I think it is way over the top. We have players bashing people in their homes, bashing partners, stomping on heads, drink driving, taking a dump in the hallway of hotels, taking obscene pics with dogs (x2), at urinals etc etc - and they are cut more slack than DCE who has done nothing up until recently when he got in a scuffle with a team mate. It's just over the top and there is only so much people can take. Someone else posted that the game makes a big deal about being aware of depression etc - yet the game, the media etc are hell bent on crucifying players relentlessly that they simply don't like or believe are 'news worthy' - a term used to justify bullying. Yes, people need thick skin in life and need to be able to cop criticism; however, this is simply over the top and has been for years when it comes to DCE.

Mason recalls taking pay cuts to stay at the Bulldogs - does he also recall he left them to follow the cash, just like their other star at the time, the one and only SBW
Pay cuts, really, the fact that they were all massively overpaid in the first place would have something to do with it.
Also did he mention at all his great buddy, SBW, who left the Dogs one year into a four year deal to chase the big money in France, without even telling the club he was leaving.

Couldn't agree more.
If one of our true greats says something then I'll listen as well.
Willie was a mercenary who added very little to our club and while choc busted his a*se he carried on like a blockhead more than once and then sold himself to Brad arfur.
Proved a bloody good buy too.
Exactly and if say a jamie Lyon or Toovey comes out and sais something ordinary i might take a hit on the chin and move on . There not only hurting Dce and ill bet they will one day regret opening their wind pipes.

None of this would even be an issue if DCE was playing well.... but he continues to feed the issue by being one of the worst highest paid halves in the comp in 2018.

He quite simply needs to start earning his pay check and be one of the best on ground week after week. Fact is he isn't. And I don't know if he can anymore.

It all started with Gladstone and leading the team out to the strippers against the coaches orders... Not a captains thing to do at all...
Mate he'll come good once we get a 5/8 who can run the team and do the general kicking for him, a forward pack that smashes opposition packs to give him time and space, edge backrowers that can hit the holes, a fullback that can pass, wingers that can catch, and a coach that can coach. If we get all that AND we can time it for his Saturn return then we will see his true value to this team.@;)

Which ever way you look at it DCE simply cant be captain of our club next season he simply brings to much negativity to our club whether its justified or not...He needs to be out of the limelight as much as possible and just play footy.

I am sick of hearing something negative about him all the time.

Warning: rant
I don’t know dce personally and am not attacking him as a person, he’s probably a decent family man. But I was devastated the day we gave him a 10 mil deal. The players obviously don’t respect him, how can he be our captain? It kills me that the team I’m so passionate about supporting is so fractured. Even if we lost in the past, I always felt like our team was such a tight group, us vs them kind of mentality. Super aggressive, I loved it. I can’t stand dce and his politician like press conferences. I find it so hard to support a team with him as captain, and it devastates me.
