PRE-GAME DISCUSSION: Storm v Manly [Round 19, 2019]

It’s a more interesting narrative to think that Parker forced his way back because he is “one of the best defensive centres in the comp” lol...the reality is Cust was dropped and that is how Parker found a way back. Cust was cleared to play well before last week’s game.

Parker has improved but still makes too many errors in attack for the upside that he offers. Against quality teams, we cannot afford his 2 drops a game. Des will not tolerate it and Parker will end up at the Tigers next year.

I don't think Cust was dropped as much as he was rested. NRL is tough for a rookie half and it would make sense to let him freshen up before the finals. At the same time, Des would be sending the message that he needs to work on certain aspects of his game.
What is more interesting for me is seeing Walker at 6 instead of Croker. Might be because Fainu can't play the 80.

Sorry dude, but I know he was cleared and Des went with Walker.

Des is the master and he spots things that aren’t working, even though it looks OK to the average punter. Cust was losing his way somewhat. It doesn’t mean he won’t be back at some stage, but he was overlooked on the weekend.

If Des was simply resting him, he would be playing 6 this week. You want a spine to click before the finals and build combinations, not sit a guy out for a fortnight who has only played 5 games without his teammates.

Made a couple of bad handling errors on the weekend. May be because he was a bit rusty as I think he has improved that part of his game in recent times.

Without doubt ... whaterever the combinations and permutations of the run on side ..... Dessie wants whoever the #14 to be able to cover Fainu ... he can hold on well in a slow game, or when kicks find touch often ... but in a fast non stop game his defence drops off alarmingly ... . and it appears Croker is best suited there, and has been putting in the practice at training ...

And with Parker and Suli going well it gives Des the option of trying different things ... like Walker at 5/8 ....

Cust and Croker have both shown they are important parts of the squad ... and any preference towards one combination or other is simply that ... a current preference and a road testing of all combinations ... I am not certain Dessie has made any decision on Walkers move to 5/8 based on one game .... but if he keeps performing it may be his .... good situation to be in ....

I wouldn't be reading too much into it at this stage .... I doubt anybody's card has been marked "F" ....... and we will need all of them before the season is out ...

This will be a good way to determine where we are at, playing Melbourne in their backyard. Get ready for an evening of frustration eagles fans, watch the absolute corrupt ref calls we get throughout the match, the slowing down the ruck by Melbourne, whilst we get penalised. Not to mention 16-1 penalty count against us by half time. If we give away less than 5 penalties a half Manly by 8. If the refs put on their show we will get flogged.
