Aaron Woods

Ben Matulino 28 with dodgy knees ... would have been ok 3 years ago ... imho

Ok a lot of talk about who we need to recruit in the forward pack .... must be time for a bit of a Yart ... so:

Current Props: (not counting Blacktown Seaeagles players and our players coming off contract)

AFB

Brenton Lawrence

Darcy Lussick

Nate Myles

Lloyd Perret

Martin Taupau

Possible recruits I would be good with that are off contract 2017

Aaron Woods

Villiame Kikau

Kane Evans

Current Second Row:

Billy Bainbridge

Lewis Brown

Jarred Kennedy

Shaun Lane

Curtis Sirronen

Frank Winterstein

Possible recruits I would be good with that are off contract 2017

Sitaleki Akauola
Nelson Asofa-Solomona
Zane Tetevano

With a $7mil salary cap, how many $1mil players can we afford?

Okay Chez at $1.2. The Turbos at 2 x at a bit less each. Then good money for Kapow and a decent quid for walker.

If your looking at another mil plus player then your bargain buy players to fill out the 25 become very important.

Its getting to the point where I'll only believe rumours when the club involved trots out the player or coach in a press conference to announce that they HAVE signed.....

So which props do you suggest we cut loose to improve the quality of our front row?

Marty would be lussick's starting front row partner, the idea that he would be better off in the back row does my head in.
Why does it do your head in. Whether Marty is in the front row or middle forward wont matter, just adding another forward to the run on side to make meters! We dont have any yardage in our current back row or depth in the front row. I see Marty as a similar player to Jason Talmalomo. Both go off for a stint, just because they are playing in back row doesn't mean they have to play 80 mins. I would bring on Nelson asofa solomona to replace Marty to keep that size and go foward going with that x factor and off load. I would have Lussick and another prop such as Woods or james graham in the starting side and when they need a stint bring on AFB or Lawrence or Myles. I would have hastings as the utilty. If we couldn't sign Nelson, maybe Kane Evans

The Indian for one "Plenty as good as him or in my opinion better."

Oops I 've been called out better reply

Klemmer, Vaughan, Scott, Fifita, Wearea-Hargraves, Boyd, Bromwich, Taupau

On a good day also Mclean, Tamou, Ryan James, Napa, Jake

Woods is in this mix somewhere. But his manager, his media profile, his likeable nature, has taken him to the next level.

The blokes in your first grouping would all be on similar dollars (apart from
Boyd). The blokes in the second grouping aren't as good as Woods (Jake T isn't as good a front rower as Woods) imo.

I don't think there are many people out there who claim Woods is the best Prop in the game, but he is in the top echelon - which you seem to acknowledge in the post I've quoted, but not in your original post. Your original post seemed to imply that every man and his dog were at least on par with Woods.

He's good, he's not a game changer.......every man and his Dog ??? didn't mean to say that , well there's what 32 starting Props in the NRL.... this guy is above the Prop average ....but no standout......just my opinion.

But what's it matter, Woods will always get picked in Origin & journo's & commentators will always wrap him and call him " Woodsy" ??? cause he's a great bloke and a great source....and JUST good enough to get by. He plays "the game " very well. His manager is worth double.

Just don't ask to pay his bills.

Unless I've read the stats incorrectly, we haven't got a single forward averaging 133 mtrs per game. He's had two games this year where he's exceeded 180 mtrs & he hasn't played amazingly at all. I wouldn't pay more than $800k for the guy, but it's not uncommon for Woods to run 200 mtrs, plus....Sign him up I say. Just like Uate was a poor signing for many on here!

For those saying Woods is not a game changer, I would say that running for 180+ in a match would certainly have an impact on the result. Sure, he is not an impact player and he does not directly set up tries, but he gets good quick play-the-balls in the opposition 20 and if he is rucking it up constantly and making inroads, it means that his halves can play off the back off that and the other impact forwards will have more energy because Woods is doing the dirty work.

You might say that it's not really making a difference at the Tigers but they have other issues and if anything Woods and Tedesco are the only two players worth feeding at the moment. I am not a massive Woods fan but his statistics read that he is a very handy prop...playing for NSW and Australia tells me the people in right places are seeing the same thing I am.

I think Marty, Lussick and AFB are consistent enough with their yardage for us not to need someone in Woods' mould.
I agree to an extent. I don't think Taupau and AFB are quite there yet but going on last years form I would say Lussick could certainly cover the yardage. Marty and Addin are better at bringing fear and aggression but are not the greatest metre eaters. Lussick brings good aggression but he also has a pretty decent motor and consistently ran for 150+ week in week out last year.

Woods is not what we need ATM. . Negotiations Yack. Add James Graham to our list and our back row will sort it self out. Would be one hell of a pack.

I am going to try and keep this as short as i can because it has the potential to turn into a long, angry rant:

A bloke of marty's size, strength, and aggression is far better utilized bashing and intimidating the big boys in the middle, helping set the platform for dce and our backline, as opposed to the narrow minded view of putting him out on the edges just to run at smaller blokes because it might earn him a few extra metres. Winning a game of footy starts with winning the battle in the middle, thats why the idea of playing marty in the back row does my head in.

I'd have to disagree with Marty. AFB might not be running triple figures every week but Marty is far and away our best forward besides Lussick. I'd even go as far as to say he's one of the best forwards in the game today. He has been consistently above 150 m every week and adds aggression in defence.

I do like Woods and would love to have him here at Manly but I also think that our current first choice forwards are doing a damn good job.

Looks like we've signed Taniela Paseka from Tigers, we have Tom Amone, Charlie Faainga.....do we really need anyone expensive? Maybe a back rower of quality but i think our props rotation is pretty good for now??

I honestly think we need a quick, hard running, hard tackling back rower before we need another prop.

Actually, forget that. We should be looking at both.

It's probably going to come down to whether or not they renew Lawrence and Winterstein's contracts at the end of the year.
