ASADA investigation: Former Federal judge steps in to help speed things up
Infraction notices may still be issued against NRL and AFL players while former Federal Court judge Garry Downes is reviewing details of the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority's 12-month investigation into doping allegations in both codes. With this week marking the one-year anniversary of the February 7 press conference dubbed ''the darkest day in Australian sport'', the federal government has appointed Downes to help bring the exhaustive but so far inconclusive investigation to a speedier conclusion. However, beyond an April deadline for Downes to finalise his report, no date has been fixed for the end of the investigation and Fairfax Media was told that ASADA would proceed as normal in its investigations, which have...
Veteran recruit Brent Kite believes Penrith are primed to step up and stake a claim among the NRL premiership heavyweights this season. Kite, who signed with the Panthers after two premierships in nine years at Manly, sees similarities to the Sea Eagles when he joined them in 2005 but reckons the Panthers are significantly further advanced. The former Test frontrower believes fellow new boys Jamie Soward and Peter Wallace are set to give the Panthers the direction they need from the halves to scale the ladder after their 10th place last season. "Manly was a club possibly on the way up when I went there," Kite said. "Dessie (Des Hasler) was recruiting well and the club was going forward and I think with Gus (football boss...
Geoff Toovey poised to sign new deal with Sea Eagles
SEA Eagles fans got the good news they have been waiting for today with coach Geoff Toovey confirming that he is close to finalising a contract extension with the club. "We have more or less come to some terms but it is not quite ready to announce anything yet," he said. "I'm happy here and I think the club is happy to have me here." But Toovey would not be drawn into discussing the length of the new deal. "I don't want to go into personal details but we will announce something shortly," Toovey said. The club legend has done an extraordinary job in the most difficult of circumstances since taking over from Des Hasler at short notice at the of end 2011. In 2012 Toovey guided his team to the preliminary final and the...
Manly's King set for NRL round one return
Manly captain Jason King is on track for an NRL round one return from injury in a timely boost to the Sea Eagles' sapped forward stocks. Sea Eagles coach Geoff Toovey said on Wednesday that King has been pencilled in for a comeback from a pectoral muscle injury in the club's premiership opener against Melbourne at Brookvale Oval on March 8. The good news comes a day after fellow prop Richie Fa'aoso was forced into premature retirement due to a neck injury. King suffered the injury in April last year and hasn't played since. The 32-year-old King won't play in Manly's opening trial against Cronulla on Friday but Toovey said he had been cleared for full contact training, opening the way for his return against the Storm...
Captain Tim Mannah says Parramatta's decision not to sign Brad Arthur as head coach last season could prove to be one of the Eels' best moves. Former Eels assistant and caretaker coach Arthur lost out to Ricky Stuart for the job in 2013 and got to fine tune his craft as an assistant to Geoff Toovey with perennial finalists Manly while Parramatta endured another season of wooden spoon misery. Overrated, under pressure, swapped clubs, next big thing – we name the top 10 players with something to prove next NRL season, with 10 honourable mentions for good measure. Read More [hr] How would you like Tony Williams and Dave Taylor in the same side? They could be the most damaging pair of backrowers ever, but more likely, the biggest disappointments. Both can be highly destructive when on their game. Their coaches respectively must be infuriated with them at times. I wonder if Tony has an ongoing injury problem?
Manly have jagged another multinational sponsor after signing air-conditioning company Daikin on a three-year deal worth more than $1 million. Sea Eagles boss Dave Perry and coach Geoff Toovey will trumpet the announcement at a press conference in Narrabeen on Wednesday. The Daikin brand will appear above the players' jersey numbers until the end of 2016 as part of the deal. The sponsorship is a coup for the Sea Eagles, who became one of the few teams to turn a profit after making last year's grand final. "We are really proud to be associated with such a prestigious brand," Perry said. "We have very aligned values in relation to community. We're really looking forward to a three-year partnership and respect their history in...
DES Hasler will remain at Belmore until the end of 2017, after agreeing to a two-year extension with Canterbury officials over the off-season. Bulldogs CEO Raelene Castle declined to confirm the deal when contacted last night, but take it as fact the news will be announced very shortly. Hasler is not a free agent until the end of next season. However, Canterbury wanted to move quickly to tie-up the two-time premiership sinner and avoid a likely bidding war with Brisbane and Newcastle, whose respective coaches, Anthony Griffin and Wayne Bennett, also finish-up in 2015. The contract extension comes as his old club, Manly, also put the finishing touches on a new two-year deal for Geoff Toovey. Hasler's former assistant will also...
