How I'll turn Brisbane Broncos into warhorses, reveals performance boss Alex Corvo Damien Stannard The Courier-Mail January 28, 2014 12:00AM BRISBANE performance boss Alex Corvo, one of the coaches behind Melbourne Storm's decade of dominance, is on a mission to turn the Broncos into warhorses. Having noted the evolution of the NRL's superstars into 80-minute performers and Brisbane's sequence of second-half collapses last year, the Broncos' pre-season focus has been on preparing stayers. Head coach Anthony Griffin and Corvo have made it painfully clear during conditioning sessions they are less concerned with size of players' biceps than they are in big-hearted finishers who can use their superior fitness to execute...
MVPs of 2014: Daly Cherry-Evans By Dominic Brock NRL.com 6:00am Wed 29th January, 2014 As we count down to season 2014, NRL.com identifies 30 players who will be crucial to their team's fortunes this year. From new faces to rising stars to proven performers who will need to lift this season, these are our 'MVPs' for 2014. When the Manly Sea Eagles were widely derided as being 'Dad's Army' last season, two key factors were being overlooked. The first was the pure quality of Manly's starting side – the likes of Jamie Lyon, Anthony Watmough and Glenn and Brett Stewart have just about done it all in rugby league, and continue to produce at the top level. The second was the youthful brilliance of halves duo Daly Cherry-Evans and...
Sea Eagles squad to be revealed at February 10 launch
Sea Eagles squad to be revealed at February 10 launch Andrew Prentice Manly Daily January 27, 2014 4:47PM THE naming of Manly's squad for the inaugural Auckland Nines tournament has been delayed until next month. Following a request from tournament directors in New Zealand, each of the 16 NRL clubs have been asked to not finalise their squads until the formal launch on February 10. Geoff Toovey and his coaching staff have a tentative squad of 18 players in mind, but it won't be determined until after the trial against Cronulla next Friday at Remondis Stadium. "We have been asked to keep our squad in house, so that is what we will do,'' a club spokesperson said. "Our focus is getting the guys fit and then having a...
Hulking backrower looking for shot at NRL level Andrew Prentice Manly Daily January 24, 2014 6:26PM JESSE Sene-Lefao was a frustrated spectator for much of 2013, and now the Sea Eagles backrower is gunning to show Geoff Toovey what he can do. He has targeted the upcoming trials against Cronulla and Parramatta as pivotal opportunities to break into the top 17. Sene-Lefao looked the goods at Narrabeen the past couple of months and can't wait to rip in against genuine NRL opposition. "Pre-season has been really good but really tough at the same time," the father of two said. "I've been trying to push for a spot all pre-season, so I'm pretty excited about these trial matches and show the coach what I've got." With the...
Strong Sea Eagles squad tipped for Auckland Peter Peters Manly Daily January 24, 2014 6:37PM THE Manly Sea Eagles are likely to unleash several of their superstar backline including Jamie Lyon and Daly Cherry-Evans in a deliberate bid to make an immediate impact in next month's inaugural NRL Nines tournament in Auckland. Coach Geoff Toovey is still undecided on his touring squad but has narrowed his thoughts down to around 18 players. Manly's backline is considered the most lethal in the NRL and there is every chance skipper Jamie Lyon and international halfback Cherry-Evans will spearhead the challenge as Manly look to add a Nines title to the club's amazing record in the now defunct Sevens formula. Powerhouse winger...
by Tim Ashworth & John Chammas Warrington Wolves first team coach Richard Marshall says his side is thrilled to be training in Australia and with the Sea Eagles ahead of the new Super League season. The Wolves have made the trip Down Under as part of a three-week training regime, and Marshall believes the experience of training amongst some of the NRL’s biggest stars will benefit his players both on and off the field. “Getting out here with a top quality NRL side like the Sea Eagles has done us the world of good,” Marshall said. “It’s a far cry from Warrington but at the same time it’s good to get out here and experience the culture and the life style. “It’s not just...
By Chris Kennedy , NRL.com Manly players are ready to welcome back local legend and former Sea Eagles prop George Rose to Brookvale Oval in their Round 1 on March 8 – with a host of young props vying to fill the enormous hole left in the club's front row roster. While the bulk of Manly's 2013 grand final squad is still intact, the front row has seen a number of departures with Rose joining the Storm, Brent Kite headed to the Panthers, Joe Galuvao retiring and David Gower joining Parramatta. Richie Fa'aoso is also battling to be fit for Round 1 after fracturing a vertebra a week before the grand final, although Jason King is on track for the season start after playing just four games in 2013 due to a shoulder injury. Speaking from...
Manly recruit Dunamis Lui says he was heartbroken when Broncos slashed his contract CHRIS GARRY THE COURIER-MAIL JANUARY 16, 2014 However, the prop once considered a ten year player at the Broncos now views the blunt assessment as the moment that will make him. After showcasing his best form for the Broncos late in 2013 Lui received a downgraded offer from his club, cutting his salary and relegating him from top 25 to second tier. The Broncos wanted him to stay but needed to manage their salary cap carefully to fit him, so their offer ended up around the $75,000 mark. It was significantly less than the deal he was on. The Brisbane-born Lui was actually close to accepting the deal and deliberated for eight weeks before...
JUSTIN Horo is the NRL star who was rebuilt when he joined the Sea Eagles last season from Parramatta. The restoration resulted in Horo becoming a key member of the Manly pack in 2013 and now the club's head strength and conditioning coach Don Singe says Horo will get even better this season. "Justin recognised he had a bit of work to do with his posture and his hips and his legs" Singe said. Sea Eagles physio Andre Rickenbach was able to design a fairly comprehensive and intense program for that and speed coach Rubin Ruzicka also worked extensively with Horo. "They had to literally strip him down, adjust him and then teach him to run again" Singe said. "And then we were able to get a lot more of the strength and power work...
John Chammas 10 January 2014 seaagles.com.au Fresh from the Christmas break, the Sea Eagles have returned to the fire of pre-season training with everyone tracking well for the start of the new season. After a long, bruising year that saw a host of players carry niggling issues through the back end of 2013, the Sea Eagles have recovered well and all appear to be fit and ready for a big season ahead. Prop forward Jason King has trained the house down since beginning pre-season training in November and has vowed to make up for lost time. After undergoing a shoulder reconstruction, the veteran forward has set himself a strong platform for the road ahead, which he has been unable to do over the past couple of years. Richie...
John Chammas - seaeagles.com.au 8 January 2014 Sea Eagles prop forward Brenton Lawrence has declared he is ready to step up into the void left by his former front row teammates as the club re-groups for the second half of pre-season training. Lawrence, who quickly became one of the game's most elusive forwards in his breakout season last year, has put his hand up to lead the Manly pack in 2014. Read More
MANLY utility back Ben Farrar appears certain to be the club’s No.1 for the remainder of the NRL season after star fullback Brett Stewart was ruled out for the year.   Ben Farrar is likely to fill the No. 1 spot for Manly for the rest of the season after star fullback Brett Stewart was ruled out for the year. Stewart is assisted from the field after his round-one injury against the Tigers. Stewart had surgery on his troublesome left knee on Wednesday, but the prognosis is far worse than first thought with the brilliant custodian gone for the season. It was originally hoped he could be back by round 20. Farrar, who played fullback in Manly’s loss to the Eels, will wear the No.1 jumper...
