Phil Gould commits to Penrith Panthers for another four years January 28, 2014 - 12:03AM Andrew Webster Penrith have received an enormous boost on the eve of the NRL season, after Phil Gould committed to the club until the end of 2017. The Panthers chief revealed on Monday he could not walk away from the players and coaches he had recruited to rebuild a club that was on its knees less than three years ago. “I've asked a number of people to join our club — coaches, players and management — over the last 18 months,” Gould said. “They've all shown great confidence in what we were doing and they joined in good faith, so I can't really walk away from them until we've spent a fair bit of time together. The chairman, Don Feltis...
It was a tactic he championed at St George Illawarra and one that his Newcastle side used more than any other team last season, but Wayne Bennett has applauded the new NRL rule awarding an extra tackle to teams if their opponents kick the ball dead, describing it as a ''game changer''. Bennett was a member of the NRL rules committee that agreed to a raft of alterations to rules and interpretations designed to reverse an alarming trend in which games have become longer but the amount of real game time has shortened. Last year, the ball was in play for just 50.41 minutes a match, or 56.62 per cent of the 89.03 minutes the average game took to complete - 96 seconds less than in 2012. ''The whole bottom line here is that the fans...
Referees will be instructed to waive complaining captains away after awarding a penalty as coaches admit some players will take time to adjust to the rule changes introduced in the NRL this season. NRL coaches were advised at a meeting on Wednesday of the new restrictions on when their skippers could talk to referees, which will no longer occur after a penalty or while a scrum is being formed. IT IS time the NRL recognised the importance of the Manly Sea Eagles to the game of rugby league in a key catchment area for the code. They sit in a critical geographical position for the code as the only northern NRL side between the northern pylons of the Harbour Bridge and the city of Newcastle. It is a massive, heavily populated area with young families and there is a battle going on in the football codes for schoolboy and junior talent. The NRL seems obsessed with western Sydney as a target area to the detriment of the northern beaches, north shore and Central Coast areas. As a result, Aussie Rules and football are pushing harder than ever for a slice of the sporting talent. In my 45 years on the northern beaches I...
MANLY coach Geoff Toovey says captain Jamie Lyon won't have to change his on-field approach to referees despite recent NRL rule changes. Lyon and Canterbury's Michael Ennis are seen as two of the game's leading debaters when it comes to discussing decisions with match officials. But their learned approaches are set to be stymied by a new law that limits where and when captains can speak to referees. Under new rules ushered in for the start of the 2014 season, captains will only be able to speak to referees during a stoppage in play, with players set to be waved away by the men in the middle at other times. Toovey admitted to some displeasure at the rule changes, which also includes measures aimed at preventing time wasting...

The two players are...

New South Wales to delay naming State of Origin squad in 2014 Josh Massoud The Daily Telegraph January 28, 2014 11:55PM NEW South Wales will this year ditch their traditional Sunday night team announcement, preferring to delay naming the squad by 48 hours in a bid to sharpen player focus ahead of each Origin match. The move is one of a host of changes endorsed by new NSWRL supremo Dave Trodden, who has declared the Blues needed to embrace a "more professional" set-up to maximise their chances of ending Queensland's eight-year reign. Coach Laurie Daley has already announced the team will enter pre-match camps in Coffs Harbour and Sydney Olympic Park, abandoning their customary Coogee base for the second time in the past...
