ANZ Stadium seeks bids for retractable roof, ground revamp
Plans to build a retractable roof over ANZ Stadium and reconfigure its seating to create a perfect rectangle for watching rugby league, rugby union and football are set to move closer to fruition, with consortiums asked to submit tenders for the proposed upgrade. An advertisement placed by Stadium Australia Operations in Thursday's Australian Financial Review calls for expressions of interest in the project to develop the masterplan unveiled last July by then NSW minister for sport, Graham Annesley. Among the proposed improvements for Sydney's biggest stadium are: ❏ A retractable roof to weather-proof events; ❏ Moveable grandstands at the northern and southern ends to bring spectators within five metres of the field of play...
Players steering clear of Broncos
Daly Cherry-Evans is all but certain to extend his deal with the Manly Sea Eagles, robbing the Broncos of their desired long-term playmaker. While Cameron Smith, who was heavily targeted by the Broncos, is on the verge of announcing he will finish his career in Melbourne. These are players who would have taken unders to play for the Broncos a decade ago. The Sunday Mail spoke to several player managers who admitted their clients were concerned the Broncos would be forced to appoint a new coach for next season. The managers were unanimous; Brisbane's poor 2013 and doubts over Griffin's long term future were causing apprehension among the playing group. The club's lack of playmakers and long-term vision was also raised as a...
Lawrence now king of the beep test
THERE has been a changing of the guard with the time- honoured, energy-sucking annual summer beep test at the Manly Sea Eagles. It has always been the domain of super-fit hooker Matt Ballin. However, he has finally been pipped in the contest by prop Brenton Lawrence. Both players topped the 13 mark for the 20m stop/start torture test against the clock. Manly's fitness guru Donny Singe was full of admiration for the pair. "For men of their size and bulk to achieve such a standard is a testimony to their fitness," he said. "Matt Ballin has made the contest boring over the years, so it was great to see him matched by Brenton." WELCOME BACK WILL HE WAS the success story of 2011 and after two years away from the game...
Glenn Stewart keen to be a one-club player
SEA Eagles stalwart Glenn Stewart is keenly awaiting word from Manly about his future at Brookvale, declaring a burning desire to finish-up as a one-club player. Whether Manly can find room in their tight salary cap to keep Stewart shapes as the most vexing point of 2014 for the Sea Eagles, who have enjoyed a relatively smooth summer to ease the pain of last year's grand final defeat. The creative Origin and Test back rower is a mainstay of Manly's sustained excellence over the past decade. Like other senior stars, Stewart agreed to back-end his contract to ensure the side would not suffer the routine decimation that's become the accepted price of success. However, the strategy puts Manly's salary cap under immense strain when...
