The No-Look News (Schuster Chronicles)

Said it many times in the past. This kid has the makings of something very special and one of the best to ever have played for Manly. Just hope he continues to develop, avoids injury, and finally takes the role of 5/8 which is his natural position He's a mix of Lyons and Lewis. Not having to do so much defence would give him extra fuel to use in attack. No reason in my mind Foran cant play hooker, as was originally planned

Unless he trims down he will not be playing 5/8 anytime soon. Will always be a big lad but i still think he can lose a little weight and firm up a little adding sharpness for the modern open game.

He might fill in when injuries strike though but that is all.

I agree he is going fantastic but who is to say we don't have the winning combination as is?

Foz and Dce are combining really, really well lately and suit trbo heaps. Schuster is playing a great role on an edge and frequently is a key link between foz and trbo in backline plays.

I reckon Schuster might be a better second-row than a 5/8 in the context of this 2021 team. Foz and Dce getting the ball where it needs to be - often to Schuster - who gets the ball to wherever else it needs to be (trbo/backs) or runs like a 5/8 anyway.

As I see it atm, dce is our halfback (and im so happy to see him playing happy again), Foran is our mostly floating 5/8 and Schuster is our Glenn Stewart but on an edge and faster. In many ways Schu is playing like a 5/8 but on a small (and effective) scale; on one edge and occasionally in the middle.

He's getting valuable experience and dce/foz are building. I'd be anxious if we were to change it all up when everything is working pretty seamlessly and getting better week by week. Good times, next week is a big, big game for us!

Yeh he is a big unit but I bet most of it is muscle. But I remember Cliffy ran about in a seemingly unfit condition for years (so did Alan Thompson before him) but he had that quality that made him the ideal 5/8. As I see it, body proportions don't really matter if they don't affect your play. The important assets for a 5/8 in my opinion are the ability to set up your supports, defend well, position well, have strength, and have speed. I've watched him a while now and he has all those assets. To me he is already better than most other 5/8s in the comp with those qualities and he'll get better. He wasn't considered No 1 player a few years in succession in the junior comps for nothing. He is surprisingly fast for a big man. 5/8 is a link position most valuable for setting up the play and that is the primary skill something we missed after Green left. This kid is the sort who could intimidate opposition in that position, just like Wally Lewis did, who I consider the best player I've seen since I started watching in 1966.

When turbo went off Des has Schuster going between wing and centre on the left.
Obviously they know he is quick enough or we would have had Funa on the bench.
Again though his defence is sweet to watch.

To be fair Des does also put Parker on the wing who would be equal slowest in the comp with Taufua

So are you also going to criticize Turbos pass to DCE that was also too hard and Daly had to juggle ?
It was a bad pass...the kid needs to stop worrying about hero footy and just play the basics... He didn't fool anyone, all he had to do was pass to cherry and he scores.. the stupid no look pass almost blew a certain try when it wasnt needed.
Same as the pass over the side line... Again, big over exaggerated no look pass to the front row stands... Had the kid looked where he was passing the winger scores a try.
Kids good, he just looks like he's auditioning to play for the Panthers... All flash and style, no basic fundamentals at times

So you agree Turbo also needs to improve his passing after nearly bombing a certain try?

The pass to DCE who scored was a little hard and high and if he drops the ball would hav heard a lot more about it, but with a rare talent like this, you simply don't water down his attributes as the freakish talent will win far more games than lose them...and to be real about these no look passes, they are usually spot on and force the opposition defence to plant feet and stop them sliding in defence, which creates space and opportunities for his outside players

Choosing when and when not too all comes with experience. He will learn, just as many of the greats have had to before him.

This boy is only 19 and is oozing class. He was thrown into a regular first grade spot in the backrow and has killed it almost topping the tackle count yesterday and topping it last week and still managing to create great opportunities with his power and silky passing. I was sitting on the fence yesterday and he walked past us on the fence. He is a big boy and he fitness level is amazing playing 80 minutes each week and tackling like a machine. This kid has amazing potential and I find it amusing that some on here still want to criticize aspects of his game. He will get better and better he is still work in progress at 19. I consider his backrow combination with Olakau'atu the best we have fielded since 2013. We have a very menacing pack at the moment and I hope Des sticks with it. Next week will be our litmus test.

Agree with all your comments but I also think he just needs to take the easy option with the pass at times. A bit like with his penchant for kicking in his first game... just needs to temper things but as you say he is young and he is learning. Great great talent. We all wish we had half of his talent when we played.
