Trial v Roosters

TBH, you would not have been disappointed with Kelly at all today...he played a strong, fast game. Two clear breaks and a very nice set up.
Kelly's strength is not blinding speed, but what he does have is a very good swerve and change of direction.
He reminds me of a lot like Willie Tonga.

Much no doubt to still contemplate for Baz . Does he persevere with Matt Wright or consider Parker or even Tom Wright for more spark in attack .
You know, I'd actually be inclined to give Uate a run in the centres and shift Brad Parker to his wing spot. Uate was great in the centres during the World Cup. Maximises his strengths (power running) and minimises his weaknesses (catching the high ball). Parker is very solid in the air and wouldn't let the team down on the wing.
Probably ain't going to happen, I know.

Didnt watch the game so I am basing my thoughts on what you guys seem to be saying.

Forwards look good. No big changes needed. I suspected that they would be a top level group.

In the backs sounds like DCE and Croker do well together. My only issue would be to switch Wrights. Tom Wright sounds like he is up to speed. Give him the job alongside Kelly, who sounds like he's firmed in his position. I would be taking Taufua out and kicking balls at him for hours every training session to get that catching weakness out of him. If not bring on Anderson and then put Tom Wright on the wing when Walker returns.

Otherwise I think Manly have shown they are well in the 8 this year if they can avoid injury.

If we fix brooky up as a fortress again , there is know reason why we cant go further then last season based on that performance against the Sombreros. 2018 is going to go down as manly being a close knit unit that humiliates the more fancied sides . We just have to keep up the intensity and consistency and shes game on .

Parker once again looked solid when making his brief appearance ,he backed up after playing a really solid 1st half in the match beforehand. He is quality and didn' look close to missing his man in defence. He deserves the vacant centre spot for sure .

Agree ... we have been trying to tell the Philistines that for nearly 2 years ...

Although we did end up losing, from what I have read it seems to confirm to me what many of us have thought all along, that we are definitely a better team than most of the so-called media and social media "experts" have given us credit for.

If we had held the ball more (especially in the 2nd half), and had a better goal kicker (DCE is ok, but not top class in that respect right now), we probably would have won from the sounds of it.

Remember people, its only a trial game and although a good number of them played in the RLWC, it really was the top teams first game together since the loss to Penrith in the first week of last years Finals about 6 months ago.

Regardless of the final score, the fact that we came out of the game injury free is the biggest win of all going into the start of the season because the last thing we needed was players like DCE, the Turbo's, Kapow etc joining Walker and Lussick on the injury list before it even starts.

Also good to hear that AFB handled starting fairly well. I was a bit dubious because when we've started him in the past he has struggled to keep up with the faster pace, but it seems that he has stepped up his fitness which is great because with Lussick out, we need him up front.

Back from the game ,but definitely couldn't give the game my undivided attention. ( bloody kids ,footy when u are single is way easier, actually everything is).
Pretty standard summary Here,
Afb - is going to have a huge year I think.
Sirro running hard tight lines.
Thompson didn' stand out a ton but was making his hits count.
Turbo's quality as usual.( We are very lucky to have these youngsters.Tom looking massive.
Croker quiet but can' expect much 1st game ,looked really composed ,can see him playing more of his open running game with a bit more experience and confidence.Hastings also led his team around in the game beforehand setting up a couple of tries and kicking goals from all over.
Barrett really has a job in front of him in picking our bench,Tanginoa looks hungry for a spot and could be anything, hard hitting aggressive impact player ,def looks the goods.Lane also played like he doesn' want back to Blacktown.
Both wingers looking keen and happy in taking hit ups when needed, this adds that extra punch when needed, both looking hungry.
Dce looked good whilst not taking game by its
Horns ,seemed pretty talkative out there ,but not getting too fired up.Not sure about his kicking goals as seems like adding a bit more pressure than he needs ,will wait and see.

Ok, the $64,000 question for @Freagle @ALinda @TerryRandall @Harry Smith @davohan123 @Spartan Eagle and any other who attended is ....

Based solely on last nights performance, do you feel we will be a) better b) the same or c) worse ... than last year.

Gut feel is fine .... so is a one word answer ...
A , As I believe we can only do better for that experience last year.(young team ,can only get better)
Not to worried at 5/8 predicament ,if Croker fails ,Hasting will cover and fill void ,whilst supplying quality goal kicking..

I dont think T Wright is ready for first grade yet.

Thanks for your response Terry. Personally I am convinced Kelly will do well. But its about Tom Wright I now focus.

I also wasnt sure if Tom Wright was ready for Firsts. And I didnt see the Blacktown game so again I'm basing this on hearsay. TW had a good though unexceptional game in the first trial. I thought at that stage he needed half a year to play with the big boys. But apparently like with U20s, he was a level above the other Intrust backs, except maybe Hastings, and dominated in the game. If that was the case then he's ready.

I would suggest he is a much better option that Matt Wright, and he offers more than Parker, though the latter wouldnt let us down. I just think, like so many players with skill in the past, its better to get them in there learning the trade against the best, if they can handle the pressure, than keep them lingering in reserves. He's 21 and Manly have had 18 years olds playing firsts. He's a real X factor player and would make a great combination with Tom T. in the backline movements. From what has been reported, I say get him in there.
