Trial v Roosters

Just back from the game
This was one game we should of won
Roosters try's most off kicks
They got lucky in the 1st half dce broke free was heading to score to make it 22-0 but needed to pass to our winger can't remember who ball dropped and roosters go 80m to score to make it 16-6, that was the turning point for me.

Ok my summary of the night
Croker while quiet was solid he wasn't the dominant half but very solid hit out.

DCE was strong and I think will be our goal kicker this year.
Our forwards were all over the roosters, we have a very competitive pack

Joel Thompson , Sirro,Jake, Marty and Addin looked fit and are a very competitive pack this year
Turbo had a few errors but he looked sharp.
Our attack was clunky at times.
Our defense needs work specially on last tackle kicks.
Overall good hitout for us.

So I will say this to end, Injuires will determine our season, if we can keep that starting team for a good majority of the season we will in my view on what I saw tonight make the eight..but injuries to key players will see us fall down the ladder I think.

This team is not a bottom 4 team in my view. For a trial was highly enjoyable and the footy is back.. you don't realise how much you miss it until you go to a game.
Sounds like we could be in for an exciting year. Very happy our pack played well.

Thanks for the nice summary. Footy is back!

My conclusion, both sides have real reason to make the top 4, although manly will need to learn how to defend kicks. Attack looked pretty good imo, some moments maybe went missing a little although it looks far different than we looked last year when we went missing in attack. Seemed much more smooth, and Kelly seemed to have regained his confidence.

Matt Wright let us down a few times leading to a Latrell Mitchell try that shouldn't have been

Badly need a quality goal kicker, although chez and api at least looked more capable in taking conversions than last year

Onwards and upwards from here

Cronk was a non-event...barely noticed him. A few have asked about Thompson - he put a couple of very big hits on in defence, looked solid and aggresssive. AFB best prop on field by a long way. Lane surprisingly good in the middle, made some big hits and carried strongly. Tanga and Lane crunched Jared WH at one stage and hit him so hard he spilled the pill. Jake did the same about five times, often making three or four dominant tackles in a set. Great ball for Tom to break the line too. Kelly was good, really tried hard to rip in, threw an excellent ball for our last try, made another good break beating three tackles. Also caught a very difficult ball and stayed in field, whereas most would have dropped or gone touch in goal. Gosiewski looked ok without standing out. Winterstein got 30 mins and did alright, nothing too special but usual solid game. Tanginoa needs to play off the bench, he really brings us something god. Fainu has put on a lot of size, and spent a solid 25 mins on field - not at all out of place in firsts. Brown got on for last five...that probably says something. Tow Wright played a blinder for Workers, and looked very sharp in his short spell in firsts. Got to say, Hastings in Reggies played a better game than Croker...plus his goal kicking was first rate. Though yes, much easier opposition. Kapow was awesome in first half, then caught the dropsies in his second spell. DCE played very well, dangerous all over the park. API was good, usual tight middle play, nippy around the ruck.

All in all, the better side lost. We dominated the first half and would have romped it in except for some silly mist sakes and unlucky bounces. Let is slip from about 50 mins to 70 mins, then dominated the last ten. Tom had a few bad moments at the back, dropped a ball and also stood and watched Tedesco score his second try from a very unlikely kick...after the dummy half pass had missed everyone and gone behind the play, Tom had heaps of time to reel in the kick but stood back. Good in attack though. Uate made two errors that led to tries, but still carried strongly. Jorge was a little slow and heavy, and seemed to play with a cork for quite a while. Still made very strong carries though and needed the run.

Pretty promising stuff, anyway.

TBH, you would not have been disappointed with Kelly at all today...he played a strong, fast game. Two clear breaks and a very nice set up.
I am happy when players play well for Manly . Consistency is what makes competent players and lets hope he is consistent this year . Against the Sharks last week when I saw him he was very average .
Where you at the Sharks game ?

No I wasn’t at that one, so cant judge his consistency at this stage.

Brilliant mate.
Great summary and updates all night. Thank you.
Sounds like DCE out pointed conk, not that it means much in a trial, but I'm sure he took something from it.
GO MANLY !!

Back from the game and we should have at least drawn, if not won that game. We had a great start and for the 1st 15-20 mins the team played well together. Then I think the 16-0 score went to their heads - the defence slackened, passes were ill-timed and there were a few dropped balls. However, it was a warm, sticky night which may not have helped.
A few individual thoughts:
Tom started well, then he got clumsy with a few dropped balls and missed tackles.
Jorge was good in patches but also rusty, which was understandable. His knee didn't seem to give him any problems.
DCE & Croker worked well together and Croker did a fair bit of kicking. DCE made a great break and sprinted down the field (he sure is speedy), only to be eventually caught and lost the ball. As usual his defence was very good too.
AFB continued his great form from last week, making many breaks and hitups.
Marty had a mixed night, with some ill-timed passing, but great defence.
Lane and Tanginoa both noticeably played well from the bench.
Jake was probably our best and there was no sign of being hampered by any injury.
Goalkicking - with a 90% strike-rate kicker (hint hint) we would've definitely won! Surprised DCE did the kicking but he went fairly well.
Overall, considering we played the highly-rated Roosters, we were admirable and certainly matched them. Feeling optimistic for 2018!

In the last five minutes one of our forwards broke through about 25m out and was pulled down just short of the line, just wondering if it was Gosiewski?
I'm pretty sure that was AFB (but I stand to be corrected). He made some very good breaks tonight!

Only first trial for Croker an Dce together but i think will be ok from all reports🙂But like i highlighted previously our center position needs to be strengthened .I know Dylan walker is out but if we come out of this salary cap bull**** relatively unscaved thats where id be strengthening @;)

What he said
Actually i must say, Parker looked fast and strong for Workers and when he got a run in the last few minutes, too. Played centre for most of the time.

Surely Parker offers more than Wright!

Much appreciation to everyone who provided the match reports , info and insight for the trial hit out . Again on paper this Manly squad and group seems to have the makings of a really competitive side . Much no doubt to still contemplate for Baz . Does he persevere with Matt Wright or consider Parker or even Tom Wright for more spark in attack . [ and if their defensive and positional play seem adequate ] [ and no goal kicking attempts for Matt Wright yesterday ? ] Start the season with a four man forward bench line up ? That Roosters back line still looks quite potent so Manly must have done well to contain it for the majority of the match and for Manly's forwards to have the advantage must be a very positive sign also . Croker seems to have fitted in well, the mainstays well led by D C E and Jake , A F B 's strong efforts and the improvement from Lane and Tanga are also very encouraging . Also the depth now provided from the Workers . With a decent run on the injury front and with Walker , Darcy and possibly Carney to also be available at some stage soon , every reason for at least some good optimism for season 2018 .
