The Panthers have by far the biggest junior nursery in the NRL.

Yes they’ve just won a GF, but it did take them a while to get there.

Im not sure you can compare us to them though I think for us it’s a mix between “ bought / developed / developed from the juniors all the way”.

I’m trusting our recruitment and coaching staff to know more than we do.

What I'm saying mate, is they may have players stuck behind the very obvious talent at the top level they already do. So rather than re-signing ageing, slow players that aren't up to the current game, pilfer some of their talent for a change. Bring in some 20-23 year old kids (big, fast, explosive), and blood them / develop them here.

It's about building towards the future. I'm unsure how signing Boyle / Taufua is "building towards the future".

Boyle has had some brilliant games for us, people calling him a plodder seem to be overlooking that. I think he's a depth player personally but he's not terrible depth. Bullemor is a real step in the right direction IMO.

It seems like the social media people are back in the office today, a flurry of announcements!

I'm sure that will be happening, whether they get spots in the top 30 or not.
But there are a few open spots still, some of them will be put into the 30 I'd imagine.

Wait on. Didn't you say none of our promising juniors would play First Grade next season? So how could "10 or 12 young kids with potential get smashed week in week out"?
Wouldn't they be playing with Blacktown?
And if you'll recall, 10 or 12 of the players in the first NSW Cup match between Blacktown and Norths did end up playing First Grade this season for Manly and Easts.
You never know how injuries and form will play out, and it was proven in 2021.
You mixed up. I said if you had your way we would have 10 or 12 kids in our top 30. Which means when injuries strike we would get smashed every week! Again I'm yet to see anything from any of our youngsters that haven't debuted that says they will be a star. (Other than Latu Fainu)
This is the whole Albert Hoppa debate all over again and we all know how that turned out.

I think there are variables that a lot of people dont consider when it comes to roster management.
  • I believe Top 26 have a min pay base rate of $120k in 2022
  • I believe players 27-30 have a min pay base rate of $80k in 2022.
  • Veteran and Developed Player Allowance allows for 200k to players who have given 8 years service to a club or 10 years service in the game (we have four 8 year players in DCE, Foz, Jorge and Jrbo). Im not sure if there is a $ cap per player or if it can be used all on one player? (obviously DCE gets it all if it can be used on one player)
  • If there is a cap per player, my guess is that Jorge would have part of his pay subsidised by the veteran allowance, freeing up some cap space for strengthening other parts of the roster while also providing depth for us in centre and wing. Can anyone share a name of an experienced outside back that we could pick up for potentially $70k? (assuming min contract of $120k subsidised by veteran status to the tune of $50k)
  • Also believe Boyle provides a cheap depth option at the lower end of the pay scale, also probably on min given there are likely 7 middle forwards in front of him. Can anyone share a better middle forward that we could sign for $120k per year?
  • I also think the 27-30 spots go to emerging juniors yet to break through.

In terms of would they make the other teams..well for Manly they are purely depth players so if you can tell me who the number 26 to 30th players are at these other clubs then we can compare them accurately.
Spot on. Everyone here are also ASSUMING both Horhay and Lance will be in our top 29 paid players come march 1. I'm not saying they won't be, but maybe they won't.

It is irrelevant whose contract the 200k allowance is attributed to. We get 200k on top of the cap and whether it is shared among contracts or goes to a single contract makes zero difference to how it is spent. Just sayin'. I agree regarding Lance.

Surely with Marty, Paseka, Aloiai, Keppie, Sipley, Bullemor and De Luis in the squad then Boyle would be lucky to ever see the field, which makes you wonder why we'd re-sign him instead of signing a centre where we only have Parker and Harper with inexperienced guys like Tuipulotu and maybe Burbo or Koula as backups. Unless Jorge has been re-signed to play there which would not work out very well. Maybe Walker will go back to the centres but he has barely played there since 2017 (the year he won Dally M Centre of the Year)

Don't forget Sione Fainu - think he will be under consideration in 2022 - his style is Very suitable to the modern game

12 or 13 I guess

Fair point but i guess we were caught short during this season with our prop depth at one stage

Okay so firstly I personally wouldn't have resigned either but I'm not going to throw my toys out of the cot over it.

We arent on the inside so there could be method to the madness.

Both are only for a year so maybe the thought is keep the kids on a development contracts (Tuitavake, S Fainu, Weekes) whilst they haven't played games in a while and opt for a steady hand for a year?

Maybe Taufua is a role model to the younger polynesian guys, a great clubman and worth his weight in gold for club culture?

Maybe the idea with say Jorge is to have his contract expire the same time as Martys 850k backended deal so we have 950k to pick up say Stefano on 600k and a 350k back?

Maybe we decided Josh Feledy at 18 will be a go and better to have Jorge to warm the seat for a year then to sign someone else on a multi year deal?

Exactly the same with Boyle and Tuitavake?

Maybe Des sees Jorge being a solid backup centre, he did play there most of the year?

Maybe we decided with Saab, Koula, Tuipulotu, Schuster, Feledy, Fainu, Fainu, Fainu, Fainu, Weekes, B Trbojevic, Humphries, Keppie, Olakau'atu, Birt, Paseka, Tuitavake etc we have enough hot young talent come through at varying stages and we wanted some steady experiend hands...then when we looked for stady experienced hands that would take a one year deal on minimum coing we realised its better the devil you know?

Who knows???

Also final point, Boyle is better than De Luis and no way I see De Luis being in our top 30 next year

Depends on what you define as an important role.

The obvious ones for us are Harper, Guac and Schu but you could argue that Toff and DeLuis played important roles when called upon but to a lesser extent.
Cust and Tuna were used very sparingly.

When you look at the chooks/bears - as their year turned out the major ones were
Ikavalu, Walker, Hutchison and also Marschke and the Butcher and the Baker

Tony Satini, now there's a player that I thought would kick on but....
