The No-Look News (Schuster Chronicles)

His fitness levels will yoyo and the intensity in his performances will be inconsistent.

He can take over Walkers role for the short term or go to another club on big money like the Tigers and play 5/8 which might give him added incentive to drop a few Kg to prove the doubters wrong.

In a slower paced era of the game i would love seeing Schuster at 5/8 being able to play at and through tight defensive lines, but in the faster era with space provided i want some sharpness about a 5/8's play.

Love his competitive spirit and confident youthful arrogance in his play but i'm sick of the make up of our squad physically not being balanced and wilting under pressure when the intensity is lifted.

If he drops weight and tones up yes he can have the 5/8 spot but i highly doubt it.

I thought the kid just looked happy to be back playing footy, I'm pretty sure he understands the situation, his succession to the six jumper will happen when the time is right
Exactly ER, having Schuster playing a ball playing role in the fwds, like a 2nd 5/8, and calling the plays in the forwards is such a massive advantage for us.

I think he was doing extra training, including boxing, in the preseason. In a photo taken earlier in the year, he looked very trim. Unfortunately, his body type is such that when he can't train effectively, his weight tends to increase.
Predictably the case, unless he has a total change of diet that is permanent and sustainable long term with a mindset that embraces the change we wont get value for money.

He does come across as a likeable bloke that gets on with others so i really do hope he can slim down and sharpen up if he really wants that 5/8 role.

Couldn't agree more with some of the points alluded to in your first sentence. That "predisposition" to a certain body type/size is not entirely true. IMO and experience, it is 99% diet, but beliefs around food (family and cultural) and emotions attached to food are the real challenges.

Quite frankly, if he does want to be the 5/8 there are some lifestyle changes he may need to consider. And just to finish off, I am happy for him to embrace whatever body shape/size he chooses. My comments are just in regards to playing professional sports and performing particular roles in those sports.

I want to apologise to @Jethro for being too sensitive years ago!
One day I was defending Jamal Idris for having a 'loose rig' on his own thread. Even though I've always been fit, I felt compelled to stick up for Idris. Jethro made an innocently/ light hearted comment and I think I shamed him a bit. Sorry Jethro! :peace:
Thanks for the apology however, I have no recollection of the aforementioned incident.

He is enormous and I'm not talking about a few extra Kgs caused by a lack of a preseason. He has a bigger frame than Arthur Beetson with just as much if not more skill. If he wants to, he could be the best backrower the game has ever seen and make more $ than all the 5/8s in the comp.

Written in blood: Why Josh Schuster won't get his way with Des Hasler - Adam Lucius

Article concludes "If an Immortal couldn’t convince him Schuster's best position is five-eighth, what chance a player manager in a shiny suit carrying a vested interest?"

That's a big call Will, and is entirely possible, young and strong with huge ball playing skills. All he has to do now is just stay on the field.

The concluding line is a cracker, the shiny suit bit made me laugh.

Sounds like a chav at the races.

He could be the next Beetson. However I would settle for the next John Gray, sans the semi-regular send offs!

Gray had some sublime skills of his own. In one game at Brookvale in 1979, he appeared to be totally engulfed by three or even four Newtown defenders, but still managed to slip a neat pass to a support. They might even have scored off that movement. Great goal kicker too.

Schuster will be the next 6 and it won't surprise me if by round 18 he has a run there with Foran having a rest for the back end of the comp .When he is ready he is moving us to the next level and hopefully it's 2023 .Bring on the tigers .

I’d bet my left one that he’s been on a diet to increase his weight to handle the back row. This would have started last preseason.
What is it with you blokes constantly giving away your left ones? Who on earth do you think would take a bet where that's what you win?
Offer another bet though and I'll take you on. Big framed kid who will never be slim. And if he stops exercising after footy he'll be ginormous.
If he's going to play 6 he'll be a very big 6. Not that Des hasn't been there before.

Fair chance Schu will be Manly 5/8 next year and Foz will be off elsewhere, or maybe retired. But despite his great talent I wouldn't be at all surprised if Schu doesn't "take us to the next level" in the short term.
He will need to improve in a few areas even to match what Foran is producing currently, let alone surpass that and get us to a new level.
I recall the Great Clifford certainly took a few years to reach the heights, he always had the brilliance but many errors too in his early years, and I see some of that in Schu's game so far.

I only got to watch a replay of the game yesterday (after missing it live) & while Schu is definitely carrying some extra timber, he's nowhere near as out of shape as the likes of Latrell Mitchell.

He'll drop the extra padding within a few weeks now that he's back from injury.

I thought he was impressive, considering how long he's been out & his presence opened up our attack on the left.

I think with players like Schu, Turbo & Aloiai returning from injury & the young players comjng into our backline, we'll be in a good position for the second half of the season.
