How Daly Cherry-Evans brutal start to 2021 season exposes Manly’s flawed roster strategy.

Sitting on the bottom of the ladder and with a mounting injury toll, there are growing calls for Sea Eagles skipper Daly Cherry-Evans to step up and lead Manly back up the ladder.

Cherry-Evans signed a lifetime deal with the Sea Eagles six years ago and has largely lived up to the $1 million a season price tag.

The 32-year old quickly matured to become the team’s natural leader and has only once played fewer than 20 games in a season since debuting in 2011.

But the start to the 2021 season has been nothing short of a disaster for Cherry-Evans and the Sea Eagles.

“To me Daly has had a really poor start to the season, uncharacteristic, he’s had a terrific past couple of years,” Fox League’s Mick Ennis said on the Big League Wrap.

“I don’t know whether he is playing distracted or frustrated but he almost ran himself in circles [against the Rabbitohs] and I don’t know if it’s because he is still trying to build combinations because there’s been so much change in the roster.

“I don’t want to be too critical of him but I must say I feel like he hasn’t been on the pace from what I expect over the opening two weeks.

“A number of errors around his game, poor passes and defensively had his challenges particularly against the Roosters. He certainly needs to be better and inspire his side given they have had so much change and lots of inexperience in the side."

Cherry-Evans undeniably has all the skills to be the best halfback in the game - only last year he had 21 try assists and 22 linebreak assists - proving just how lethal he can be in attack.

At the moment though he looks burdened by responsibility without injured superstar fullback Tom Trbojevic in the line up.

Add the fact Manly are still without a clear option at hooker and Kieran Foran is still settling into his role alongside Cherry-Evans and there is even more for the halfback to deal with.

But that is the responsibility that comes with being one of the highest paid players in the game.

Now the Sea Eagles are calling out for Cherry-Evans to simplify his game.

On Saturday night against South Sydney, the 32-year old was presented with an opportunity to do just that.

He was faced with a sodden Lottoland pitch he would have usually ran around on with a clear purpose, finding the corner and using his long-range kicking game to strangle the opposition out of the contest.

As difficult as it may be given the disruption caused by injuries, the Sea Eagles need more decisiveness from their million-dollar man, especially without Trbojevic.

Cherry-Evans’ impact in attack has been somewhat nullified though by the opposition, who have targeted him in defence.

With 25 and 30 tackles from the first two games of the season, both the Roosters and Rabbitohs have effectively limited Cherry-Evans’ opportunities to stamp his authority on the contest.

It has left him with no try assists or linebreak assists to open the year.

Interestingly though, Cherry-Evans was performing far better last season without Trbojevic in the side, embracing the added responsibility in attack.

He averaged 1.46 try assists and linebreak assists when Trbojevic was missing while those numbers dropped to 0.29 and 0.43 respectively with him in the line-up.

Fox League’s Corey Parker though pointed out that Cherry-Evans’ struggles are part of a broader issue at the club.“They have a big roster problem,” he said on the Big League Wrap.

“They have Tom on a million, Jake on big money, DCE on big money and then the rest. That is where I see the problem for them moving forward. They need to disperse it more evenly.”

For this week though, Cherry-Evans faces a Dragons side who have also been tipped to be in competition for the wooden spoon.

While his form may be on the decline at the moment, Cherry-Evans can take confidence from his opposite number’s man-of-the-match performance last week.

Ben Hunt simplified his approach against the Cowboys by backing his running game and Cherry-Evans could benefit from doing the same.

difference between his first year.. he was playing with superstars who all took paycuts to win trophies. Now we have too many big stars not willing to take pay cuts and are stifling the salary cap. Well you have **** around you because of it. You will win nothing.

Yer but in an interview it was mentioned that Hunt has spent the last 18 months with a sport psychologist (must be time for chez to check in, his thought process and responses seem like they could do with some work or what ever it is that goes on with the mind Dr, doesn’t seem to have been a negative for hunt) then I think Hook is a decent coach who may have bought a fresh approach to the saints, simplified things for hunt, reconfirmed hunts role both in the game and as a half and for whatever reason or combination of things it seems to be off to a good start, but I’ll reserve my judgement on hunt until we see some consistency from him and the Dragons.
it not rocket science all us who follow our side can see chez‘s game is in a mess what’s behind it? I don’t have the answers, but its no different to a lot of our problems, if some effort is not forthcoming to introduce some change, then I don’t see things improving.
For example, we could try altering our flat attack, it’s not working and chez is getting picked off or put under pressure, stand deeper find some extra time with the ball, our last play options are killing us, our kicking game is killing us, surely Des as a first grade coach can identify these issues and take some pressure off by bring about some change or other go to plays, more of the same won’t be the answer, it hasn‘t been for sometime now.

What I find annoying is that everyone keeps say we have too much money invested in 3 players. Look at all the other top sides they also have at least 2 players on a million and quite a few on 800-900k. Problem is the salary cap and 3rd party deals etc that allow teams like the roosters to sign quality in all positions as their pay doesn't go towards the cap. When Roosters won the comp they had cronk on a million, Teddy on a million, Crichton close to a million, keary and Cordner 700-800k, then the rest like Mitchell, Hargraves, and so on.

Last year Melbourne had Smith on a million, Munster on a million, an international pack all on big dollars, no difference except Manly (who i do believe is paying about 100-150k each too much for DCE, Tom, and Jake especially since the turbo's were going no where) pay big dollar's for 3 but don't have the brown paper bags or 3rd party deals like Melbourne to give us an extra 750+ dollars. Still think we have a competitive squad when all fit, and promising juniors coming through. Maybe missing a strong edge forward.

I feel more the team need to just start playing better, especially DCE and also that dezs coaching the flat attack needs to be revised. Not working. They are obviously training this way, and it's totally not working

Pretty sure DCE has a ‘mind coach’?
Has there ever been such a highly paid player who is in constant need of support? A psychologist, a game manager, a wet nurse?

Exactly right.

DCE's effectiveness in any game - like almost any halfback - comes from having multiple other attacking threat across the park, so that they (the halfback) can be freed up to use their ball-playing bag of tricks. With few other threats across the park, and being targeted and close-marked in defense, the attack from the half-back stalls again and again.

If the opposition was worried about our wide running threats (fullback, second rowers, centers and wingers) they would be concerned when our halves look to our edges with the ball in hand. But - Tom's out, our second-rowers can't step or turn inwards, and our centers and wingers are not considered dangerous enough with the ball in hand to really worry mos of their opposites. Our wide 'threats' are not threats enough, so the opposition knows that they can kill off 80% of Manly's attack by negating DCE. If you don't fear the ball going wide, you're probably more alert to the inside ball as well.

Foran is still adjusting to Manly's style of play circa 2021. Don't get me started on the lack of attack coming from dummy half.

All of the above is why IMHO our attack has stalled so far. It's only two games, I know......but all in all, I don't see enough points of creative attack (and it doesn't all have to come from the half-back - that's the point in a good team) across the park with our current roster (particularly in our backs).

We start winning the noise will die down. Tom back soon I hope and that will help immensely. Not just what he does but what it does for the guys in terms of confidence. Nobody complained about our unbalanced roster at the back end of 2019 when we were in the finals. In fact I think we were likened to what melb were doing and it was working. Results change all that. I rewatched the game v dogs last year first game back after Covid and you should have heard Tge commentators talking us up before that one. “Premiership heavyweights”. How things have changed. With all our money in the field we are a top 8 side every day of the week imo.

I have said the exact same thing. Our attack is too flat and too easy to read. Dez needs to fix this. Balls goes to DCE and so many times he had to dummy to centre who was standing flat footed right next to him. Players are not running onto the ball and they are not in motion. No structure to the backline, although there is no threat at hooker, or from full back, no second phase play, edge forwards hardly make any metres and cannot ball play or step and make a break.

DCE kicking game is on him though, been so poor, and last tackle options.

For us to be a threat with ball need better structure, players charging onto the ball getting a bit deeper to start, a threatening full back and hooker. Edge forwards with more punch.

I noticed when DCE was interviewed before the Souths game he said he intended to do more than just kick to the corners and would use the ball. His mind set was skewered from the outset you can't ignore the conditions and expect to play razzle dazzle. When badly out of form good players go back to the basics and that's what he needs to do. An ego can be a achilles heal.

Exactly mate.

Another year, another string of inconsistent performances, another wave of excuses. Same old, same old. 3 more years and then hopefully we can move on

In positive news I had a dream last night that DCE absolutely put on a clinic against the Dragons and this place went ballistic with "I told you so" threads. I never dream about Manly/Silvertails so not sure what was going on there. Probably because I was playing around with my Supercoach team just before bed, wondering who to sub in for Nathan Cleary and CHT.

Hopefully he can do this this week. Everyone needs to lift if we are to win games with our injured players. We need dce kicking game to improve, and Foran to help out here too. He needs to also find his voice on the field

Well based on your dream, DCE.

I find it hilarious we keep hearing the same crap like another poor year from DCE. He was voted on here as our best player last year LOL. He was at the top of the leader board in the NRL for try assists and line break assists in a poorly performing side. Two poor games and he has been underperforming for years. Haha, load a load of crap.
