Slater Knob Fest

I don't believe there was anything wrong with the Slater tackle. It was a desperate fullback doing what was needed to prevent a try.
Pre the shoulder-charge rule I'd seen thousands of such tackles.
Whilst the tackle is now deemed illegal and he will, by the letter of the new law, be suspended I believe the law is ridiculous.
The shoulder-charge rule was introduced to stop players being hit in the head with an opponents shoulder. Yes, these 'tackles' should be outlawed.
But bumping a player into touch with your shoulder - provided you don't come in contact with his head - should be legal imo.
By "new law" are you referring to the shoulder charge law that came in 2013??
I'm sorry, but 5 years in, theres no excuses.. I myself hate the rule, but he executed a shoulder charge, he misses out.. Same as countless other players have had to do since 2013

I'm loving that they have charged him, but what worries me is that is their smokescreen. Hey, look at us, we're not biased, no room for emotion here in the hard nosed MRC. We've charged Billy Slater and he'll miss a Grand Final. No corruption in the NRL, no favouritism from us.

As soon as he pleads not guilty and contests it the judiciary will lap up the evidence from the Storm's chosen biomechanical expert who will prove through multiple camera angles and still frames that there was a genuine attempt to use an arm in the tackle. Case dismissed, Studs up free to play and Todd and his merry band of muppets look like they did their best.
This is EXACTLY what will happen. It's melodrama play acting just like the wrestling!

This will be a fun one for the NRL judiciary.

They will set a precedent if they let him go.

While I agree the game is getting soft, I hope he watches from the sideline. Karma for his grubbiness throughout his career.
Spot on!

If they let him go, they'll be basically giving him a licence to use his grubby tactics at will for one final time 😱

What gets me is he still uses his grubbiness, yet is such a good player he doesn't need to.

The most gut wrenching thing is just when we are so close to not having to watch Grubby again is I realized he will probably all over our TV screens as a commentator for years to come, along with Scam & Cronk.

Where is that vomit emoji

Problem is that everyone is ignoring the damage caused to Feki's shoulder. He went off soon after with a shoulder ACL damage 😡

That was after the 2nd illegal play they put on him with Vunivalu cleaning him out while he waited for the high ball

I hate this talk of "he can't miss a grand final because of it", is absolute rubbish, in a comp as tight as this years has been, a similar suspension in the early weeks of the competition could have cost a team a game that would have been the difference between running 3rd or 7th

Feki's shoulder was compromised by Slater's illegal hit, then he sustained a second trauma.😎

sCam missed a GF so Slater should not expect special treatment :nerd:

Was it five years ago that they brought in the rule? How time flies when your sport is going down the gurgler....
I think the intention of the rule was to eliminate shoulder contact with the head, which makes it a valid rule. However, shoulder contact with another part of the body should still be OK. It is a contact sport.
To me, what Slater did was what any desperate player would do to prevent an opponent scoring a try. That's all I'm saying.

Media release on the subject when the new rule was introduced From Todd Greenberg and the NRL itself (I hope the judiciary can use Google?)

Any player who commits a shoulder charge using force will be automatically charged by the Match Review Committee from this weekend.

Head of Football Todd Greenberg said today the change to the rule would remove ambiguity about whether a player should be charged.

Mr Greenberg said the shoulder charge was dangerous and had potentially dire consequences if it went wrong.

While the NRL had made the shoulder charge illegal, the current rules mean offenders can escape a charge if there is "no forceful movement of the head or neck".

Mr Greenberg said the rule would be simplified to require any shoulder charge with force to be charged automatically by the Match Review Committee based on the severity.

"We need to be clear about this... we cannot allow player welfare to be put at risk by shoulder charges," Mr Greenberg said.

"A player carrying the ball cannot protect himself properly against the force of a shoulder charge.

"We have seen this type of tackle have tragic consequences recently and the NRL has an obligation to put player safety first."

Mr Greenberg said players found guilty of shoulder charges risked lengthy suspensions.

A grade one shoulder charge offence carries a base penalty of 200 points and more serious breaches can result in suspensions of up to eight matches – or more.

"In other words, anyone found guilty of using a shoulder charge with force will be suspended for at least one match," he said.

"So there will be a real incentive for players and coaches to ensure that shoulder charges are taken out of the game."

I agree with you ..... but the fact remains that it was a breach of the current rules ....

To adjudicate the rules based on who the player is .... is what is known as corruption ...... as unfair as that will be on occasion ... the alternative is to have a sport devoid of all principle .....

If the rules are bent based on who breaks them ... we are truly sunk in the mire of intoddgrity ......
