[Resurrected] SACK Des Hasler!!

I appreciate the reply and to be fair, all the points you have raised are both sound and valid.

I have never said that I dislike Des, to the contrary I have the upmost admiration for his achievements both as a player and coach and respect the dedication that he shows towards his players, seeing them as human beings first and athletes second (e.g. your mention of the DW case, Manase case and others before that).

Des is very passionate about developing people through sport.

A majority of coaches (in times gone by) may not have gone "above and beyond" as Des has done and continues to do; the bond this relationship creates is one which engenders a spirit of camaraderie in the squad and outside of the game, as he is viewed by many as a surrogate "father figure".

Des is rightfully seen as a "man manager" (one of the "rare coaches" who has succeeded and was not a product of one of the so-called "five coaching pillars") and the results [he] achieved were reflective of his steadfast and resolute support of each and every one of his players.

There are a plethora of articles written about Des quoting current and former players who speak glowing of the man, the coach and again, I am not disputing this at all and we both agree that Des was front and centre of the recent "fiasco" due to the insipid management of our Club.

I believe where our differences (for lack of a better word) lie is the "present versus past" tense of his abilities; I can not and will not dispute any of what Des has laid before us and achieved for the Club however, as Wayne Bennett has found, the aura which may have carried a coach throughout his career is no longer the cache that it once was.

The player of today has an army of advisors who scrutinise the entire opportunity a club presents them, the coach (who it is and thoughts of others about them), the football departments, the methodologies/football orthodoxy the club has planned for "X number of years" as well as the executive of a club.

Des is intimately aware of our cap position and has built a roster to ensure that we are cap compliant; we can't sign a "good player" so we look to the young members of the squad who could probably use a game or two in these last rounds however, injury/ies aside, some were not given much of an opportunity to showcase their skills (ten minutes here and there in my humble opinion does not count).

As a fan I am not asking Des to throw them to the lions but at the same time let's see what they can do, some may succeed and others may fail but without the chance to see that, what changes do we, as fans see for the future that give us "hope".

Des having his full-roster will go along way to helping his cause and there were times this year where we played quite well but there were more times when with a full-strength squad, we were found out, excruciatingly slow speed at the ruck, forwards that were seemingly flat-footed most of the time, we had issues well before 25 July 2022.

It will be an interesting off-season for our Club, I want to believe that Des is the man to lead us forward but I struggle to see any collateral from Des that leads me to believe that we won't be having the same conversations next year.
I think we are closer in ideas and thoughts than we probably want to admit.

I will never say never re the coaching team and if there were a better option Id more than welcome the possibility. just right now there isn't in my thoughts.

Yes Des has a lot of 'in the past' moments but I do feel he's good enough to do it again. 2021 was a testament to that.

I think the whole let's play the kids argument is a little shaky. If they are really good enough then their time will come. Regardless of my years of armchair analysis and vast knowledge ( jokes) people like Des obviously have vastly superior knowledge than me so its hard to demand a player gets a run.

Look at young Hoppa. apparently, he was supposed to be our savior a few years back. speed, strength, skill. he had the full deck according to many a silvertailer and people just couldn't understand why he wasn't being picked. well, the reason he wasn't in the side was that he wasn't ready. simple.

Des isn't perfect by a long way and yes he can drive us fans to despair sometimes however id rather have him doing it over a lesser coach we bring in just to ' make a change'.

case in point TBAZ

This is a player/team/recruitment issue .
With no Turbo & running hooker ,our spine is shot
Dce has had his time ,he doesn't lead .
We need to be consistent ,Dce has never been consistent.
To fix this fractured group ,we need to chop off the snakes head.
Buy a running hooker and the two toughest young forwards from the NSW/Qld cup.

That will take the owners permission and I'm just not sure they care that much.

I hate during games when they flick to a coaching box and there's the roosters with about 48 blokes on laptops and the sideline looks like a pop up medical ward.

When it goes to our coaches box you get this:

We all get the same info (apart from a few club insiders) and I guess its about how you decide to view it.

From my point of view which will be different to many Des is Manly. Sure there will be those that say his time at the dogs destroyed any legacy he will ever have at the club but for me that was just business. He was pushed out the door by a dysfunctional board and split owners.

The guy has always been front and centre attempting to protect his players. He appears from the outside a very good man manager and someone players will run through walls for. Sure perhaps todays modern day prima Donna's don't agree but all I see is a guy focused in fixing issues and playing footy.

I bet if you asked any of the 2006 - 2011 players for us and a lot of the 2012 - 2016 dogs they would all back that up.

You may not like him but Ennis speaks very highly of Des. So does James Graham whenever the topic comes up.

So to attempt to answer your question directly.

For me the rainbow presser hit home how much this club and football means to this guy. The owner and or management team should have fronted up that presser but no. Our coach and captain was left to pick up the pices.

Regardless of result Des appeared at MF side in his court case.

DW was collected from the watch house after his arrest for DV by Des. Not by a family member or friend. By his coach....

In general coaches don't do that. Des appears to want to help whenever he can. I can only go by what I see (which will be different to some others).

So when I say he's trying to fix the **** show thats exactly what I see. Many would have walked or let others take the heat. Not Des.

Wonderful ... Dessie Hasler for father fiqure of the year ... give him the clubman of the year award as well ...

... but I would rather he spent his time running defence drills and attacking patterns ...

It's tough isn't it?

there are very few good coaches with runs on the board out there. Everything needs to align for a coach to be successful. Doesn't matter how good said coach is if it doesn't click with the right players at the right time then success is scarce.

Look at Cleary. made a GF in 2011 and then spent years in the wilderness before landing at the current Penrith. just so happens they look to have a generational side so good for him.

Des created his generational side. Bellamy his ( all be it from cheating the cap).

Would Robinson have been as successful at say Gold coast or The tigers? without uncle nics money?

I say stick. many say twist. no winners here.

Very tough indeed.

I think most supporters will agree that there needs to be some serious structural changes across the board commencing from Friday night. The only question for mine is what to do with Des. After i get over the massive disappointment of this year....specifically the continuous and embarrassing poor defence out wide, the really bad disjointed attack, the incredibly slow line speed.... my desperate wanting to get rid of Des subsides. After I take a deep breath, I cant actually think of anyone out there who could seriously come in and oversee the massive re-build about to happen. Some good coaches names thrown up (eg Flanagan) but seriously would you put someone like this (an outsider) in a basket case organisational and political setup currently at Manly??? This would be a classic "thrown under the bus" scenario which would torpedo 2023+.

Someone said it earlier that i think we need to be careful what we wish for. As much as it pains me to say, I would be sticking with Des to oversee the changes. Hopefully under a strong "Chairmanship" from Tony Mestrov.

ps love to see Tooves back as defensive coach.

What do you think of Des and Foran with the schiit they have previously put the club thru?
I have very little positive to say about how Des left the club. It was an act of extreme bastardry by Des, which Penn then reciprocated. I wasn't happy when Des came back, and predicted at the time it would end in tears.
On the other hand, Foran left the club under confusing circumstances, some of his own makings, but more down to our incompetent recruitment and retention policy. Personally, I don't think Foran has had to prove himself to anyone since his return. He has been outstanding for us over the last two seasons. He would have been a fantastic mentor for Schuster and Humphries. Foran should have been the priority re-signing, while DCE should have been slowly eased out the door and back to Redcliffe.

Said who, he nearly won the GF if wasn’t for that forward pass by roosters!!!
That's right Brocky, that was a massive forward pass.
I can't understand how it wasn't called back.
Just B4 half time, Killer kicked for the side line, Jennings stuck his foot out, he made contact with the ball and the Roosters got the scrum feed.
Pearce knocked the ball out of Foran's hands when he was in the process of playing the ball, not far from the try line.
The Roosters got the scrum feed, again.
Ironically, the only 'people ' that didn't see any of these were the Ref and Touchies.
There were quite a few illegalities by the Roosters, that the 'officials' failed to act on in the 2013 GF.
Roosters fans I've spoken to over the last 9 years have sheepishly admitted that they were very lucky with the poor decisions or lack of decisions.
In regards to Tooves, I don't he's the solution.
Though, I do feel that a former Manly Legend could be a good Candidate for the Coaching role.
I won a Premiership with The FORESTVILLE FERRETS if that helps the selection process........
Though I do have a strict rule about the 4th tackle.
On the 4th tackle, the ball is to be treated as a 'hot potato '
I want to see the ball being passed thru multiple pairs of hands.
Forwards acting as Halfbacks, Schuster moving in a forward direction, not sideways.
Any player taking a soft, submissive tackle on the 4th would be faced with a hefty fine.
Plus, what happened to the ' up and in ' defence technique.
Too many tries are scored due to players backing off, giving the attacking side an easy passage to the try line.

If any Club wants to be successful, they need to nurture and retain their Juniors.
The NRL needs to increase the Salary Cap as well.
Wasn't that a great decision to let Gutherson go, all those years ago.........
