NRL 2022: Des Hasler must accept change or his time at Sea Eagles is finished

Manly coach Des Hasler may have coached his last game for the club with the veteran mentor considering quitting as the club insists on change at the top.

Des Hasler will have to accept a raft of changes placed upon on him or risk having coached his last game at the Sea Eagles.

Manly management and Hasler are expected to meet at some stage this week with Hasler’s future now in the crosshairs after the Sea Eagles slumped to their seventh consecutive defeat with a loss to the lowly ranked Bulldogs on Friday night.

It is understood the meeting will dictate if Hasler remains in charge with suggestions he has lost the support of the club’s senior management. Hasler can either accept the recommended changes or those close to him have indicated he may elect to quit the club despite having 12 months left on his contract.

The Sea Eagles want to turn over Hasler’s coaching and support staff putting the likes of assistant coaches Michael Monaghan and Chad Randall plus Hasler’s long-term confidantes Noel Cleal and Don Singe are among those in the firing line.

It is understood Randall is close to joining the Bulldogs as part of Cameron Ciraldo’s new-look coaching staff.

New club boss Tony Mestrov made it clear change was inevitable.

“Because of the team performance, we have to be open to change,” Mestrov said. “If I came in and we were finishing sixth, I don’t think there would be the leverage to make change. But everything has been fast-tracked because of the performances.

“The owners want what I want – to have a successful football club, be financially better off and deliver what the fans and board want, which is a successful football team.

“The dynamics are not working at the moment and that means decisions have to be made. I wouldn’t call it a review. There won’t be a review. There will be discussions about how we can improve. I don’t think it is anything other than that. But we have to do something because the end to this season has been disappointing.”

The Sea Eagles are a club at the crossroads with political infighting among some officials and a split in the player ranks threatening to tear the club apart.

Hasler has his own frustrations with a front office who have turned over club bosses and he has felt a lack of support. Manly’s crippling injury run has contributed to their dramatic slump which coincided with the rainbow jersey debacle – with the club having not won a match since then.

Hasler has been angling for a contract extension but that has so far fallen on deaf ears. The team’s failure to push inside the top six this year has stopped him from gaining an automatic contract for 2024.

Owner Scott Penn has returned to Sydney from his New York base to deal with the issues. Hasler and Penn still have a testy relationship dating back to Hasler’s first ugly break-up with the club when he joined the Bulldogs in 2012.

There is a push from some within the club to hand more power to emerging coach Steve Hales who enjoys some strong support among some of the club’s youngsters.

@Red Pill .. y'all still think it is just my cheap tin foil .. ?
What! This is hyperbole!!! to the extreme @Woodsie . The club didn’t finish well and they are going to talk about how things can be improved.. the only part of the story that is not scuttlebutt is what mestrov is quoted as saying. To paraphrase he says he would not even call it a review but the club needs to find ways to improve….Don’t you think all clubs that have disappointing seasons are doing the same thing and have been doing this process for years!!!The story is the ambiguity around Des’s contract and it is Manly. The media is playing us like we are all on puppet strings. If it all blows up next week I will be first to pay homage to your mighty tin foil hat mate. 🙂

I liked Brandys take on it. Mestrov and co want changes around the assistant coaches and the high performance side. If he doesn’t go along with it, he’s probably gone.
Des being such a control freak, this is gunna get ugly/er imo.
It may get ugly but thankfully it’ll be quick given Des only has next yr left on his contract so if they get to Rd10 and things are ordinary,it won’t cost much to flick him

I don't know if Des is a bad coach, is being a control freak and trying to run everything effecting his coaching. If he agrees to pull back and concentrate on coaching only would it be enough to have him getting the results again.
If he is replaced who becomes head coach as there isn't to many candidates available.

The biggest problem besides Penn not have deep enough pockets is there always seems to be too many factions running the club, I can't remember when everyone was on the same page at Manly.
There is always leaks to the press.
Arko wouldn't of put up with any of this rubbish.

We need an Uncle Nick in charge, as much as I hate the Roosters they are well run club and you never hear of infighting.

If I won every bet with a generous benefactor I wouldn't fight either 😉

You are correct though, and it highlights the divide in the NRL - we have an owner that looks at this like a hobby. Roosters, Souths, Brisbane, Melbourne ets - have owners or benefactors that are invested in the success of their club

Haven't read this thread but I think the news is about our Mad Monday plans as reported in tomorrows paper.

Well thats the only news I know of coming out of the club today. Probably not even news.

We keep hearing a consortium of business heavyweights contacted Manly owner Scott Penn with an offer to buy the Sea Eagles. And we’re talking big dollars. We spoke to Penn about the offer but he insisted the club is not for sale under any circumstances.

Penn going nowhere sadly.

What the hell - why? If all he cares about is $$ why not sell

Which captain of a struggling NRL club is off-side with teammates. This is potentially a huge off-season story. The coach and chief executive are aware of the situation and it is getting to a stage where the skipper may have to be stood down from the role.

Sounds like DCE?

Ahh poor old Buzzard, took this straight from some of our forum conversations, the guy is seriously devoid of any credibility.

Secondly, until such time as he is hoisted on the shoulders of the NY Rugby League elite and paraded down Fifth Avenue, he isn't going anywhere.

Clearly half the team is not a fan, been like that since 2011. Your either camp DCE or not. Should never have been made captain.
