Well yes the game and our club at the moment are s$$t.
We are a complete basket case but I won't be giving up on our club..if you can't stand these tough times then there is the door.
We will come through this ..maybe 5-10 years time but we will and we will be back in the top 4 soon.
I can't stand seeing us like this but won't give up on us. As long as Jake T is at our club I feel confident of a rival of our club.

It's not like these inconsistencies are getting worse, it has been the same way for decades, it is just now the average fan is more informed/educated through a variety of media platforms and are now not as blind.
.

In answer to the latter part of this: the average fan IS more informed (though perhaps LESS educated due to the less than black and white nature of a lot of the rules). They are more informed because we have 11ty camera angles, HD ultra slow mo replays and the weighted and deep comments provided by the “experts” that feed us their opinion in scintillating fashion.

“It’s not like the inconsistencies are getting worse”.... I’ll have to disagree on this point, and vehemently!! The application and interpretation of quite a few “grey” area penalties can and does vary immensely at times. Even some black and white rules (forward passes make a good example!) seem to be bent, or ignored at will... I’d also contend that, technically speaking, (hehe puntastic!) the inconsistency is, in fact, getting worse. Simply put, when the number of penalties per game has increased exponentially this season, and men like Perenara and the Suttons are making a significant percentage of these decisions... well you do the math!!

I got to the ground early to watch all three matches.
In all three we were beaten by goalkicking. We scored the same number of tries, or more, than the opposition in each match. The Under 20s was a joke. With the scores locked up and 10 seconds to play Manly has the ball and is penalised for not playing it properly. Thank you. Penalty goal to Easts.
Our reserve grade couldn't kick a telephone booth if they were inside it. Hasson was the only one to land a goal, and that was right in front.
Cherry misses a conversion, and declines to take a few other shots at penalty goal.
Forget about recruiting a new coach. How about a goal-kicking coach?

I think that the way the game is played is a direct result of the officiating: and my belief is that the officiating is driven by a one significant factor..

Ego.

And for that, we can thank that prancing little turd Bill “Hollywood” Harrigan. Every time he ref’d a game, his ego driven belief was that he was more important than the players, the game, the fans, and most importantly the history of this great game. Bill was actually quite a good referee, but his legacy is that of on field officials with zero feel for the game and an over dependence on technology rather than experience and intuition/skills.

Most importantly, the referees have become the most critical men on the field in terms of their ability to influence the ebb and flow as well as the momentum of a game. We are seeing an average of 15-20 penalties per game these days: put another way that’s a penalty every 4-5 minutes which creates a stop start, juddering mess of a game in my opinion. The inconsistent application of “grey area” penalties and more importantly the timing of these bullsh*t judgement calls can dramatically swing a game in one teams favour...

Remember when guys like Joey Johns, Tooves, Cliffy or Ricky Stuart et al could take a game by the scruff of the neck and win the game for their team?

Nowadays, Henry Perenara has more influence on the game than any of those players. Let that sink in for a minute.

Peranara > Cliffy?!?!?

Rugby League has no place for men like Cliff Lyons any more. Not in the NRL. The template these days is a hyper athlete that plays his structures and hopefully is disciplined enough to not give the officials any reason to use them as an excuse to manipulate the game.

Personally I find this to be a sad state of affairs. I’ve noticed that we talk more about the refereeing than the game of late, and players are always appellated with the negative “ill disciplined” tag if they are pinged for something that only the referees consider to be a lack there of. Penalties are no longer awarded to a team, they are “conceded”. Whilst they have always been a result of ill disciplined play, they are now placing the onus squarely on the teams (as indeed they should) but in a manner that suggests that said penalties are the fault of the players and the players alone.

My problem with this is that the interpretation and application of 90% of the penalties given changes from referee to referee, from ground to ground, from team to team, from player to player and, let’s be honest, on an almost minute to minute basis. And they point to the players as “ill disciplined”, whilst blowing a penalty for something that 30 seconds earlier was let go, or an even worse infringement.. and how in the hell are the players supposed to understand an interpretation that varies so fluently??

It just sh*ts me to tears. The game used to be a spectacular thing to watch, and still can be if State of Origin is any indication...

Anyhow, apologies for the rambling and slightly incoherent ranting. Have had 11tybillion beers and am typing one eyed on a cracked iPhone :)
Great post

i used to be on this site several times a day...but have dropped off dramatically over the last month. I’m so disillusioned with the way the game is run and officiated. The way the game was officiated today was the icing on the cake. A forward pass let go right in front of the touchie (that’s two games we’ve lost this season because of corrupt linesman... the Canberra game was the other one). The ten metres was non existent (after having had to endure the penalty fest/sin bin love affair all season it’s like a bad comedy) The random play the ball penalty against AFB only for the same offence to continue fervently for the remainder of the game and go unpunished. An accidental offside penalty. It just goes on and on. I’m not going to watch another game until Greenberg and his Queensland idiot offsider are gone. Well done NRL... you’ve turned me off a game I’ve been passionate about for over forty years.
That accidental offside interpretation is a game killer. What a way to destroy the integrity of a match and the sport. I hear you! You can feel the energy being sucked out of you.

It does get to you ole mate dont worry about that . I need this year fast tracked asap.
We all love our Sea eagles mate and we are all gutted . There are no consolation prizes that come with losing .

If I'm not seeing headlines tomorrow about that touch judge needing a police escort out of Brookie, I'll be disappointed

They scored 2 tries, from right on the spot his poor decisions were involved in both of them, Scott dropped that ball cold that he called a strip

I left 15 minutes into the second half as I couldn't watch anymore. My decision had more to do with the standard of rugby league, rather than the officiating. What an awful product! This is not the game I grew up with. We are not the only ones noticing, either, as people are beginning to switch off. Manly's attack was nothing more than crabbing across field, Tapau and AFB excepted. My wife knows nothing about the game but was shouting at them to RUN STRAIGHT!!! Rugby league will be a minority sport within twenty years as there are no more footballers left, just 6'4 bash and barge types.
If I had a dollar for everytime I yelled at the TV...."Go forward ya fuuckhead"......id be a rich man.

Great post. You should get on the piss more!

Look at the esteemed leaders of nrl, one in beattie puts out a international calender last time i checked rlif runs test footy. Next one its great the girls kissing at womans origin amazing equal rights how the **** can a idiot touch judge miss a 2 metres foward pass in front of him and pick up wrong play the balls and accidental offside

While I'm not a fan of the way the game has gone, I just love watching those Turbos. Love 'em!
This perfectly sums up my feelings. They are such a throwback to the. Beavers and cliffys of the 90s where winning/losing a game meant something. Good on them. I just hope we get to keep them!

No excuses. We played against a team without most of its stars and got done over at home.

This team just doesn't have enough ability and deserve to be in a wooden spoon battle.

Kelly laughing again after the final nail is hit in our coffin post game.

Some Parra players were crying post game this week.

Don’t damn the sport of Rugby League because of the way it has been manipulated by the NRL administration. The NRL is a sports based reality TV program designed to maximise gambling revenue. The sport is alive and well and being played in a park near you. Walk down this afternoon and have a look. You’ll find it refreshing. By the way: they occasionally show games from the 70s and 80s on Foxtel and it WAS a much better game.

The thing that gets me, is that the media delight in kicking us while we are down. Every article you read these days is how great the other team did against adversity, how the other team was unlucky to lose the game because of this reason or for that reason. The focus is never on how well we did against all the odds and that really scares me. We have no one willing to come in to bat for us, its like they all want us gone and thats another thing that really scares me

I’m not done I’m just not as heavily invested as I used to be.

Let’s not forget we lost by a point, yep 1.

Parts of tonight were good , parts fair and parts the usual shyte!!

I enjoyed 75 minutes of that game , sad we lost but I’m far from done!!

Mark I think we lost by one outrageously disgraceful decision by a blind and/or corrupt linesman aided and abetted by other blatantly wrong 2nd half decisions in Melbourne's favour.
