ELGEY

Hoping that as well, all though read an article today in the Tele saying Maloney is expected to sign a 2 year extension with the chooks. On 360 last night the big fella that does the QLD wrap up said that yesterday the Titans made there first formal offer to Myles. Only one I haven't heard much on is Hodko and the last I did hear he was happy to stay at Dogs for unders so whoever wanted to sign him had to pay overs to lure him away.
None of the top players want to come to Manly now.

We will probably end up with someone like Mitch Cornish who doesn't get on with Stuart as our half next year if we cannot land Elgey

Beau Henry has had about 5 clubs since was was 20's player of the year.

Bennett rates him as a pea heart so no thanks.

I hope I am not right however I think the club underestimated how hard it would be to sign quality halves. Kelly's comments at the season launch around how we would replace foran and dce with other world class players does not look promising at this stage

Kelly and Penn have made a mess of things so far and really need to pull out some good signings before next year otherwise they may as well pack up and go elsewhere - preferably Parramatta.

If we receive the wooden spoon this year Parra might be the only place for the both of them

Part of me thinks Joe Kelly is keeping his cards close to his chest because he doesn't want news getting out in advance of the round 13 deadline and allowing the players current club to counter. There is a lot of radio silence on a few key players (Maloney, Myles, Bird, etc) that gives me a little hope.

I'm actually really hoping that is the case because the alternative is that we are going to sign nobody and I'd rather not think about that...

Clever strategy. I would operate that way. It's very unlikely that you could keep any activity quiet though. The best you can do is not offer anything to the media, even if a player has verbally agreed to or signed a contract.

There's no doubt we have a big interest in Elgey but it will be if we are prepared to throw the dollars at him to come.

If we are just a bit above the offer from the Titans he will stay, so again we will probably get screwed on cap to nab him.

And of course whilst he has loads of potential , he's played 3 games and so we would be investing heavily in a " maybe" future star.

For my point of view I'd rather offer a bit more to an established half and bring up a JLJ or Travers to learn from him.

The Lurker just wrote that we are close to signing Elgey and looking at Hodkinson. Zero tackle reckons we are also looking a Cameron Mcinnes from Souths...Does anyone know if he's any good ?

I think we could rely on Elgey or Travers as our halfback next year. Young halves generally go well if they have an experienced halves partner and a good forward pack to play with. Tim Smith had a ripper of a debut season with Parra. DCE's debut season with us was perfect. Adam Reynolds has gone alright and Keary capped off his debut season last year with a premiership.

Our focus should be on getting a solid 5/8 and some quality forwards. Getting Elgey would be a bonus but he is not essential.

They have big raps on him but it is as a hooker. I posted on here only a couple of days ago if he could handle a swap to the halves and he is playing there this weekend or named anyway so would be good to see how he does.
Cheers for the reply, I'll keep an eye out for him this weekend.

I really want Elgey. I know he hasn't had a lot of experience yet but he's showing good signs of a player that can be turned into something great, and hopefully Joey can turn him into an even better player if he was to come to Manly.

There were a lot of talented players in the National Youth Competition including the likes of Jack Bird, Tom Trbojevic and Valentine Holmes so for Elgey to get the Holden Cup player of the year says a lot in itself.

You can let Elgey know that Narrabeen Lake is right next to our training ground. When he isn't winning games for us, he can paddle board all day everyday 😉

just read the same thing - don't know what to believe though.

Sounds like it Mark...I think he probably did want to stay but he's been backed into a corner.

Seems that way. If we get Elgey and another capable half (I'm hoping for Carney) then we're in good shape. I'm happy to lose DCE and Foran if we get able replacements because it frees up money to get forwards and maybe someone with a bit of utility for the outside backs. Better to have a team that's strong all over the park than just sink a massive percentage of your cap into playmakers. Just ask the Cowboys...
