Should Hastings be given a go as a starting half in the NRL side?

Caught up with an old mate this morning that has been about footy teams forever ... we were talking and he said he has had a fair bit to do with Jackson over the years in Junior reps both in league and touch football ...

Being old school ... I could see that he didn't want to bag the kid ... but he offered that he was always different and a constant handful to manage ... mentioned that his parents weren't very helpful either ... part of the problem ..... not surprised at the current state of affairs .... nothing much appears to have changed since juniors .... everybody that has coached him has tried .....

It is a sad situation really ...

But I think 38 pages is enough to devote to the issue .... I am sure none of re going to resolve it by the time we reach 40.

The sad part about this whole thing for both Manly and for Hastings is that I really do believe that in Manly's spine with Tom, DCE and Api his NRL career could have taken off.

Now we'll never know what might have been.

Unfortunately its left us, outside of DCE, extremely thin for halves talent.

But I do hope he manages to sort himself out.

The press conference uncut is in that article.

I thought Trent spoke really well. For anyone doubting his leadership watch the whole thing. I said a couple of months ago I had a mate that dealt with Hastings a bit while he was at the roosters (the mate worked there). I really feel like saying I told you so to all those people that were bagging baz for not picking him.

Explains a lot when you hear him say they had a formal meeting with the players association on Feb 2. Mid pre season essentially

I’ve always suspected his parents might be big enablers of his behaviour. Makes me think about how the blindly proud parents that excuse or facilitate horrible behaviour are nothing new..

“My son should be starting”
“How can you have that kid playing ahead of my boy” etc..
We see the ‘child beauty pageant’ Mum syndrome mixed with soccer Mum syndrome mixed with connections and historical ties to a professional sporting competition and you’ll likely get one self entitled brat with an ego ala Jackson Hastings.. it sucks. He’s so talented but that Conor McGregor attitude doesn’t apply as well to TEAM sports like rugby league

@Mark from Brisbane loves a good round number milestone on out of control threads, let’s see if this one even needs his rallying to get to 40 by mid day ; )

Let’s see if the team can turn things around on the field this weekend.

Good point, all this stuff getting aired out publicly could galvanise the squad and remmoving any misunderstandings or toxiticity from the playing group could bring a lot more focus back to game preparation. Could be a weight off a few players shoulders now..

Interesting to hear Trent say if it wasn't Daly that ended up in the scuffle with Jackson, it would have been someone else that ended up in the situation with him. Doesn't paint the prettiest picture.

He also said Daly tried to clear the air after their scuffle in Gladstone by going to chat with Jackson in his hotel room, which is when the second heated exchange occured.

Slight tangent, but still relevant (I think).. I was talking to a guy I know over the weekend, who happens to be a fairly good friend of Shannon Boyd (he's a farmer - has always traded stuff with the Boyd family). Seems he was speaking to Boyd a couple of weeks back, and he stated very clearly that the Raiders were having the exact same issue with Blake Austin. In fact, Shannon Boyd said unequivocally that "We all ****ing hate his guts".

Austin is a much more established part of the Raiders environment than Hastings is/was for us, but they are having a fairly rubbish start too. Wonder just how de-stabilising it is for a team to have a bad element like that?

And you'd certainly have to back Sticky to smack his players around if they weren't pulling their heads in, so I think it suggests that T-Baz has been on the money for a while too, and that is exactly why we haven't seen Hastings get that number 6...

Maybe if Hastings played at 6 and excelled in the role, the other players may actually put up with him.

People can generally get away with being obnoxious if they are a star. As Trump says, “They let me do it”.

It’s a moot point now but we are still stuck with a below par 6 until we can find someone else.

This is a very emotional situation.

The main thing is the welfare of Jackson Hastings. Making sure he that he has continued access to mental health counseling and mediation with the RLPA, his manager (Sam Ayoub) and family as well.

He is not a bad person. No one is perfect. Whatever attitude problems, personality disordered behavior or mental health issues he has experienced we (as a club) still owe him a duty of care as a human being. As supporters we only know a certain part of the story. Hopefully a peaceful resolution can be worked out so that everyone involved feels good, safe and happy.

It's just a game.

Actually, thinking back a bit further (in an effort to:

a) procrastinate as much as I can at work, and;
b) get this thread to 40 pages...)

Remember Mick Monaghan? Gun player, leader, courageous, seemed to put heaps into the club and community...but almost universally unpopular with the playing group. They all called him a weirdo. I think he maybe read too many books to relate to many footy players, but he is another one that should have had a much longer career in the NRL, but was shut down because he couldn't interact properly.

Then again...his brother did receive fellatio from a dog, so maybe there's more to it.

Kimorley was right in what he said on Fox. Get him out
Unfortunately Hastings just doesn’t get it
As TB said it’s been ongoing his had meetings with his manager the RLPA
How many times can you tell someone to pull there head in
DCE went in to his room at Gladstone to clear the air with Hastings then it got heated again ,DCE showed he wanted to sort it but again Hastings just doesn’t get it
And here we are another player down
Hopefully now the players show they can get on with playing footy no excuses now

We will never know the full extent of whats gone on but all i can say is i feel for the bloke . Reason untapped ability that didnt reach its potential and more importantly more counselling for him . With all this out in the open id be concerned about his state of mind and hopefully he is being watched carefully , even if its all his fault its still a hard pill to swallow for him knowing that his self being is not popular across 3 clubs . I wish him well .

To be fair it sounds (emphasis on sounds) like the club has tried to the right thing expecially how Baz handled it this morning

Great post and spot on.

I am glad Barrett came out this morning and cleared the air while repeatedly stating we have a "duty of care" responsibility, to all players.

Best of luck Jackson for the future.

Wow. Not a single one has considered the effect this whole saga has had on the Frog, if they have they haven't mentioned it.

This crap has been going on since the Frog started here.
How much of it has been directed/leveled at him? I would imagine a LOT of it.
Can you imagine how tentative he must feel EVERY time he gets the ball?

I hope it's a huge load off his shoulders and frees him up to play footy.

There is no way he received the many national accolades he has if he has played like he has for us. Baz has even said he has a GREAT kicking game. Where is it?
He's probably so scared of fu*king up that he is almost frozen.

Talk about a young kid doing it tough, being Hastings real target for 5+ months. The unassuming, Frog is probably a big silent casualty of this whole thing.

I hope it helps him, not makes it worse now Hastings has been expelled.
