2nd Row

Roberts, Randal, Boyd, those three names would strike fear into any opposition, not sure how they’d go in todays game, they’d still smash them but I’m not sure they would spend much time on the field.

The more assertions I see that Parker is not and will never be a second rower... the more I want to see Des pick him there for one match and see what happens.

It might not work... but it just might...
I think it would be wise of Des to play Parker at 2nd row, but only from the bench.....so if we're counting on Des for this to happen, I wouldn't get your hopes up.

As everyone else is having a go....

This side would go OK under the new rules I would say

Kite
Ballen
Spud
Beaver
Whatmough
Gifty
Schuster
Toovey
Wolfman
Killer
Matai
Turbo
Snake

Jake
Paseka
Gauc
Dce

He has been knocked out in the “tough going “ one in from the sideline half a dozen times. His first tackle of the year and he was in Disneyland. He gets smashed regularly and is clearly targeted.

Does he enjoy that?

An edge forward is tackled three times as much as a centre and usually by multiple larger defenders. An edge forward also does three times as much defence against bigger bodies. He is not Terry Randall or Noel Cleal or Stephen Knight or Beaver Menzies or other hard men of that ilk. Not even close. No one bashed them ANYWHERE on the footy field and that’s WHY they went to the forwards. He is a struggling very average centre not remotely in their league .

I sincerely wish him well but if they have any concern for his welfare he won’t play there.Seriously does anyone really think him playing there or not will change the result of a game? He’s going to belt opposition forwards and bust the line ? He’s not. Don’t risk his health for zero return.
Somewhat different when you're close in. His problem out wide is he isn't fast enough to cover quick centres and yes because he's slow he can be easily covered himself out wide and therefore easily taken out by covering tackles. Closer to the ruck would be easier for him to cover and his running would be more direct or ranging, like Menzies was.

Menzies also wasn't that good at centre and often found himself unable to cover the ground as easily. His skill was being that extra man, often using the foil of Cliffy to burst into gaps. Out wider he didn't have that advantage playing centre.

Parker has a surprisingly big body for a centre. As for Randall, I watched him come into grade (actually knew him slightly at school so I was quite interested in hi progress) He was relatively fast but not quick enough in the centre and made little impact there. But he always had a great defensive style. I remember him well having watched him from his first games in 1970. There are a lot of similarities in what I saw of him in 1970 and what I'm seeing in Parker. That's why I suggested it a few years ago. It was a few years before he became the Igor we so loved. Cleal was a monster, no matter where he played, more devastating out wide. He was a terror whether in the second row or centre like Meninga. But Parker is more like the Randall I remember in 1970.

Parker / Randall / Beaver Really ?

Pass the bong Bear. Love your confidence but Randall is regarded as the hardest man to don a boot in this great game of ours. A legend.

Parker has played a third as many games as him already so he’s no novice and was also part of our left side debacle a week ago.

Beaver scored 180 tries. Parker scores three per year.(15 tries in 65 games at centre and wing )Some props score more than that.

Anyway hope you are right for Scorpios sake. The game loves going on about the effects of concussion and they and the clubs do **** all about it. Just don’t get it.

Ask Matterson if two weeks is the right penalty. ****ing joke.

Did you see Randall in 1970 Susan? The Randall you recall is what he became not what he was when he first came into grade. Players dont come into the game as the champions we remember. It took Cliffy until he was 25 before he made the impact we start to recall. Most good forwards mature by the time they are in their mid 20s, just like the ones we have coming through now. There are few instant champions, especially in the forwards. And like I said I watched Randall closely in 1970.

Now I'm not saying Parker will emulate Randall, I'm just saying there are similarities I see in him compared to the Randall I recall in his first year. Parker may fail, but he might just surprise. I guess we'll have to wait and see because now Hasler is talking of putting him in the second row.

Randall was tough as a mallee bull from the age of two bear. The old timers talk about him and Steve Knight wandering the beaches together like Greek gods.Tough hard roosters regardless where they played.

Randall also did not get knocked out every two weeks in the centres or second row even in the days of the headhunters

I think you are missing my point though. Let’s just agree to disagree on talent.
My point is I don’t want to see him get knocked out again!
And this increases the chances many times over.
It’s a talent issue at a basic level for sure but in reality if he was passable or not in the second row who really cares. The medical side far outweighs that. And as a punter I’d wager a lot of cash on multiple concussions. It’s so damn obvious.

Not worth it when you actually pay other blokes at the club good money to actually play n the forwards. Wtf will they be thinking.
Probably just go on winning and enjoying their footy with Blacktown I suppose.

Watched the game with Nik Kosef last Saturday at Broady Bowlo. He works security there these days.Like all of us shaking his head where we are at now.

He has always said Beaver was universally regarded as the hardest edge forward in the game to tsckle because of his incredible strength through the core and hips. Hence he’s the second highest try scorer in history. It was also how he hit so hard and often right under the ball.

Brad is no Beaver in the strength stakes, believe me.He rarely scores even at at centre and opponents love lining him up unfortunately - and when a shot goes wrong in this comp someone pays the price.I just don’t get the upside.
I thought Kosef owned a pub ??

No. Mermaid Tavern he owned with a few lads went down in gfc. He was fifo mining then working at Kirra pub but that’s being redeveloped now.
Great bloke.Wouldnt mind him right now in the back row. Bit of trivia. His long time best mate “ Hollywood Pete “ , an old manly lower grade larrikin halfback and junior rep coach in the 70s is Bradman Bests grandfather. Another one I wouldnt mind.lol
