2017 Rugby League World Cup

It was a strip and it was one after he had already had someone attempt to tackle him so that's two in the tackle. Penalty at minimum. And if it is stripped (irrelevant if a loose carry, a strip is a stri) and the ball is regathered, that is in my understanding regaining possession. Bad ref call that one.

LOL! I must be the only one who didn't think it was a deliberate strip. On the 10th or so look, I am not changing my mind. But, I will ask again, what is the damned rule? I can't seem to find anything definitive. I will agree to disagree, with all of you!! Teehee...

I'm 95% with you but, as the ball is knocked forward and hits the ground before being regathered, isn't that normally a penalty rather than play on (please excuse my ignorance)? Or is it because its in the final minute and possession's regained that its play on?

geez, you can't start letting those examples through as not a knock on.

Strip should only be for when the stripper rakes the ball out into his own possession, not for instances like this.

The tackler tapped the arm/ball, it probably still came off Fifita last anyway, but it was poor ball security.

No try

This is the NRL version, the RLIF wording may be different.

Page 25, Notes part 8.

If a tackled player loses possession of the ball at the moment of impact with an opponent or with the ground, play shall proceed unless stopped for some other reason, e.g. the ball has been knocked forward. A player in possession brought to his knees or brought to the ground on his back may still pass the ball – provided he has not made it evident that he has succumbed to the tackle. He should not be wrongly penalised otherwise all players will become reluctant to pass the ball as the tackle nears completion in case they too are penalised. The continuity of play would consequently be adversely and unnecessarily affected

Yeah, after reading all the Ceecined posts on here I eagerly found a replay of the game readying myself to hurl abuse at the reviled little official. But after watching I was all like, yeah nah.

It was 50/50 at best..............but not a clear cut howler (like the Peachey sh*t)

Can't see how it was ever play on (it could surely have only ever been a scrum or a penalty)

Maybe he could have blown a penalty and then Tonga would have had one play................a bit of quality drama.....as they say we are in the entertainment industry.

I hate to say it, but after numerous times watching the replay, I think the c@nt got it right (he's still a c@nt even if I agree with the decision).
Old mate was in the process of effecting a tackle, the fact that he came in contact with the ball is irrelevant.

Pardon me while I go out and have a spew!

Doesn't it show the poor direction officialdom have taken the game when people can even come close to considering that last play was a try.

20 years ago it was a knock on and get on with the game, and there wouldn't be a comment

Fifitas carry of the ball was low, and the England player is coming in to tackle him and touches the ball which sets it free, knock on. For me a strip is when a player gets a grip on the ball and rakes it out, or takes a big swing at it, neither happened in this instance. Incidental contact in the tackle caused the ball to come free, not a stripping motion

But Cecchin is still a **** ref regardless

The ball carrier has got to have some responsibility. Loose carry imo.
I think it was a loose carry also. However, given it was the last play of the game he should have sent it up as a no try to have the video ref confirm his decision. Doubt it would have been ov

Should'v been a try. The RLWC is a joke anyway but Tonga playing next week would've been given enormous atmosphere. Now will be boring no atmosphere half full suncorp.

50 - 50 call but the fact that Fifita ended up with the ball to ground over the try line really should have resulted in a Ref "s call and referral to the video Ref . Very open to considered interpretation of course but my gut feeling was that it was a try , especially taking into account the nature of a couple of previous strips in the game . So much raw talent in that Tongan side and with some better finish and polish would always be a very hard side to handle . Hoppa seemed in his element in the coach"s box .

really ? ... I thought he looked a bit confused

In the end though, regardless if you thought it should have been a knock-on or try by Fifita....the reality is that for 72 minutes England really dominated that game.

I hate to say it but in the end the better side won yesterday.
