GEOFF Toovey says there’s no reason for his Manly side to fear that the window for another NRL premiership tilt may be closing. Coach Toovey says the Sea Eagles’ mantra of consistency, which won them competitions in 2008 and 2011 and got them within minutes of grand final glory last year, will work again even though some core players are ageing and front row stocks have been decimated. Last season, stars Anthony Watmough and Brett and Glenn Stewart struggled to shake-off injuries. Glenn and Watmough, along with Jamie Lyon and Jason King are all aged 30-plus, and even though Brett Stewart is a couple of years younger, his knees may disagree. But with the NRL’s premier halves combination of Daly Cherry-Evans and Kieran Foran...
Ten to pursue Nines TV rights
CHANNEL 10 may pursue rugby league’s Auckland Nines to build on the success of its summer ratings bonanza, cricket’s T20 Big Bash League. The short form of rugby league made its debut last weekend with strong viewer figures on Fox Sports. Ten’s potential interest in the Nines could also be a tentative first step after the network’s narrow failure to win the NRL’s $1 billion TV rights contract 18 months ago. Ten last broadcast rugby league some two decades ago, but has made strong moves in...
Beaver tips the return of a legend
AFTER the successful comebacks of Steve Menzies and Brad Fittler in the Auckland Nines tournament last weekend, watch out for another Manly legend to pull on the boots next season. “Beaver” reckons his old teammate Cliffy Lyons will be the next star veteran putting his hand up next year for a start. “This will definitely inspire Cliffy,” Menzies said. “I have no doubts he will be knocking on someone’s door this time next year saying: ‘Hey, do you need a playmaker’ for sure.” The chance to see the old combination of Menzies and Lyons together again would be magic. A MANLY SUGGESTION WITH the former Manly contingent of coach Brad Arthur, Will Hopoate, Darcy Lussick and David Gower having moved out west, it might be time...
MAROONS ace Johnathan Thurston is adamant foreign stars should not play State of Origin despite fears the code’s new eligibility rules forced Sam Burgess out of the NRL. The NRL’s interstate guidelines came under fresh examination yesterday after Souths co-owner Russell Crowe claimed Burgess may have stayed in the game if he was permitted to play Origin. Read More
SUNCORP Stadium bosses are prepared to launch an audacious bid to bring the NRL Nines to Brisbane as club bosses accept the tournament is set to become a permanent fixture on the rugby league calendar. The stunning success of the inaugural Nines in Auckland over the weekend has convinced many sceptics in NRL club land about the value of the nine-a-side event, with more stars expected to play in next year’s tournament.
