NEW Sea Eagles prop Josh Starling has revealed how he wants to emulate the deeds of teammate Brenton Lawrence as he prepares to make his NRL debut for Manly against the Storm on Saturday night. Like Starling, Lawrence made a low key arrival at Manly last season and quickly established himself as a key member of the pack. Read More
SEA Eagles stalwart Glenn Stewart is keenly awaiting word from Manly about his future at Brookvale, declaring a burning desire to finish-up as a one-club player. Whether Manly can find room in their tight salary cap to keep Stewart shapes as the most vexing point of 2014 for the Sea Eagles, who have enjoyed a relatively smooth summer to ease the pain of last year's grand final defeat. NRL chief executive Dave Smith isn’t surprised the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority investigation has dragged on for more than a year. More than 12 months after Smith and the heads of six other codes attended the news conference in Canberra branded ”the darkest day in Australian sport”, no player has been suspended and the investigation into the use of banned substances continues. Smith said he knew at the time that any outcome was a long way off and the NRL had acted carefully as a result. ”I am not surprised, given the complexity and the amount of work involved,” Smith said. ”I can remember as part of that process, as difficult as it was, that the allegations were incredibly serious and really complicated. It felt that it...
David ‘Wolfman’ Williams set to play first NRL game
WINGER David Williams is confident he will be fit to take his place on the end of the Sea Eagles’ backline for the opening NRL game against the Melbourne Storm on Saturday night. There were fears “Wolfman” could have missed the entire season after damaging his knee during the Auckland Nines. But the injury turned out to be severe bruising, not ligament damage. “I should be right, I am looking forward to it,” Williams said. “It’s all good, there are no concerns with the ACL or anything like that. Williams, who hobbled back into Sydney on crutches, said the diagnose came as a big relief. “It’s gone from six months to two weeks, it is a lot better than first anticipated.” Williams still has to get through team training...
DALY Cherry-Evans was booed off the stage when he won the Clive Churchill Medal for the best player on grand final day last year but the Manly halfback will start the 2014 season as the favourite to take out the Dally M Medal. Cherry-Evans confirmed his standing as one of the game’s genuine superstars in 2013 and he will lead a star-studded field in TAB betting for the NRL’s most prestigious individual prize this year. Cherry-Evans is the $7 favourite for the Dally M Medal ahead Johnathan Thurston at $9 and Greg Inglis at $11. Cherry-Evans was the best player on the field for the majority of the grand final but there was plenty of criticism of the judges when he won the medal because the Roosters ended up winning the game and...
Rugby league could be at sixes and sevens this season, with a new zero tackle call creating confusion for referees, players, fans and broadcasters. Any team kicking the ball over the dead-ball line will see the opposition restart play from the centre of the 20-metre line on zero tackle. This is in addition to the other zero tackle ruling, in use for some time, which applies when a team gains possession from a knock-on. In other words, there are now two situations where a team receives seven tackles, rather than the standard six. Read More
Endemic time wasting which robbed the game of more than 400 minutes of action last year forced the NRL to make crucial rule changes this season, the game's governing body has revealed. The NRL has implemented a number of rule changes ahead of the start of the new season next week, including reducing the amount of scrums and limiting the times at which captains can question referee's decisions.
