Trial V Panthers

From what I seen in the two trials the players that played well and used the trials to showcase where they are at.

1. Hoppa
2. Bully
3. TKO
4. Faulalo
5. Simpkin
6. Willett

Would have liked to have seen more of

1. Patolo
2. James
3. Sykes
4. Dunford
5. Schoupp

I was disappointed with the efforts and performances of Brown and Sipley, thought they had the chance to start the year strong and push to be in the 17.

From memory Sips is a traditional prop type who usually takes a few weeks to work into match fitness.
Brown has been rehabbing some sort of injury so probably also a bit underdone.
In fact, possibly why these guys were trotted out for the trial.

Haven’t watched the pennies trial myself but seems to have left a few slightly disappointed! Oh well there’s always next year 😀

Ummmmmm 2011!!! MOM in 2013 decider (which was ripped from us btw).

DCE will depart in the next few years, and when he does, we will need to replace him. Some people think that we can't or won't be successful when that happens, but I disagree. As good as he is, we will be fine.

Bob Fulton departed in 1976... and while we didn't replace him with another immortal, we still won a premiership two years later.

Ben Kennedy departed in 2006... and while he was one of a kind, we still found an excellent replacement and won a premiership two years later... and another 3 years after that.

I personally like looking at a lot of statistical analysis, and this article was one of the best I'd seen.

This line stuck out to me when they analysed "Wins above replacement rate", or in this case, "Wins above [a] reserve grade [player]" (WARG), which is a stat used pretty comprehensively across many sports. I think someone even used it on Napoleon Bonaparte to determine that he was the greatest general of all time.

Anyway, the article went through and analysed every player since 1999. It said this about DCE:

"A career with 6 WARG is good enough to be in the top 10% of all players with a NRLM appearance, and more than 19 is required to be in the top 0.5%. That is, in no particular order, Darren Lockyer, Matthew Bowen, Paul Gallen, Cameron Smith, Johnathan Thurston, Billy Slater, Robbie Farah, Benji Marshall, Cooper Cronk, Greg Inglis, Jarryd Hayne, Daly Cherry-Evans and James Tedesco at the end 2024."

Players from that list don't come along often. They are generational. When we lose DCE, we are going to lose a lot from him.

Also worth noting, is that when accounting by games played, so players with fewer games are included, Turbo is second only to Andrew Johns with his influence on games.

Not to mention Garrick and Koula. But then, they weren't really worth mentioning.
A standout is that we have no depth in the halves at all.

I predict Onitoni Large will be a first grader in 2026. Joey Walsh might not be far behind him either.

The way we play will need to change when DCE retires (I don't think we will be able to count on the new guys for golden point field goals for a while), but i don't think we will miss him as much as everyone thinks.

Definitely have to bring Large on as best and soon as possible , looks to have the makings of a real good footy player
Shame that Joey Walsh has not been able to play any footy to date but sure that there are still high hopes for him as well .
Delicate timing if both may seem up to top billing next or during next season and club will just have to find the right pathway to accommodate them

Apparently the NYC will return next year from what I've heard. If that's the case, it's practically a certainty that our halves pairing in that will be Walsh/Large to prep them for first grade in 2027.

Very similar to DCE / Foz back in like 2009.

Bully looks a couple of kilos heavier than last year.
The first 20 I didn't see any issues, mainly just Browns poor ball playing causing turnovers and poor field position. The next 20 was just mistake after mistake and dumb choices.
Don't know if I would be too concerned with that game overall.
Thought there were some good performances, glad I watched it for myself after reading the post mortems.

Just on that trial, it showed why the Penrith junior system is so dominant and why when an injury occurs, a player can seamlessly jump in and play the role solid and sometimes even more.
Manly looked like they hit a wall after copping some odd calls after scoring early and lacked composure to roll back into the game against an inexperienced Penrith team.
Not sure many were terrible, but there were some terrible plays that seemed to catch fire across the team.
I feel come game 1 at Brookie the intensity and quality will be 3 - 4 levels up and will need to be, as Cows will be a solid test 1st up.

Yeah, when they didn't win easily (which I think in large part was caused by the awful ruck refereeing from Atkins), they started playing jungle ball and kept turning it over.

I'm not too concerned but it was awful to watch.
