Manly-Warringah Rugby League Football Club Board

Statement on Geoff Toovey

It’s a sad day when an icon of our great Club - which next year celebrates its 70thyear in the competition - is told he is unwanted as the Coach despite being under contract until the end of 2016.

It is bewildering to anyone who follows the game that a Coach who during his tenure has taken his team to every final, including a Grand Final, and currently sits just two wins outside the top eight should be treated in this manner.

His position as Coach was undermined even before the Season began and continued relentlessly throughout the entire 2015 season. He has not been treated with the respect he has earned and deserves.

Geoff Toovey is a Life Member of the Manly-Warringah Rugby League Football Club.

His service and loyalty to our Club, including his time as Coach, speaks for itself.

As a player:

  • · 286 first grade games, 1988-2001
  • · Club Captain, 1993-2001
  • · Clive Churchill medal winner, 1996
  • · Australian Captain, 1996
  • · NSW State of Origin representative, 1990-2000
As Coach:

  • · 2012 – Preliminary Final
  • · 2013 – Grand Final
  • · 2014 – Semi Final
Despite today’s announcement, Geoff Toovey will always remain an icon of our Club.

GO MANLY!

Extremely disappointing

Tooves will always be a legend of this club

Good luck Trent, i will treat you fairly, based on results, not prejudices

This is disappointing. Thankyou Tooves for all you done. What you did as coach after Hasler left will not be forgotten. At least they gave Tooves the chance to see out the season.

Basically it seems that the Penns are the reason he is gone, but they did reference Bozo in the clubs media release.

I will give my support behind Barrett, as he is the coach next year and Bozo wants him there.

I will not be surprised to see Halser back at Manly in a few years.

I understand the message here, but the pissy nature of it is really not necessary or helpful.

A true Manly legend. Tooves you will always have a special place in my heart.

You could have spat the dummy this year, and no one outside of the penns or zorba would have resented you for it....but you never did. You bit your lip and got on with it. You fronted the media even when getting caned. You never once shirked it.

That is why we love you.

Another chapter closes in Manly Folklore
All in the week we receive our loyalty pins
Its disappointing that it ends this way for Toov's but he wasn't the first and won't be the last club legend to feel this ,
I still remember Fatty saying when he left the office with tears welling in his eyes that his Manly career was over
Toov's achieved a lot in his 1st grade coaching more than a lot of others will
Thanks Toov's

I agree. If Barrett fails, I could see Des back in the fold at Manly.

What a scummy, poor timed, inflaming, adding to the destabilising environment article. This is why those on the board need to all be moved on as soon as possible.

What do they hope to achieve with this? What's their plan?

Idiots.

Good luck Trent Barrett for 2016. I hope you have a successful tenure as the Manly head coach.

P.S. if you don't want to get a ton of supporters offside from day one, don't force out Matt Ballin.

Disagree all you like @HappilyManly - you tell ME what they hoped to achieve with this article after the club just made a decision about the future?

Was it a feel good? Cut off your nose despite your face champion.

Exactly @HappilyManly - Yartastic, because you have nothing better to offer. With the club's welfare in mind, these fools should have just shut their traps - for now at least (until the dust settles).

They are creating conflict for the purpose of creating conflict. They should be removed because of this.

GO MANLY!
At least someone involved with the club defends it's greatest legend

Even Beaver played for other clubs while Toovey took minimal time off from football and got involved with the club at the nearest juncture

I fail to see how our players will respect a man who let himself get bitchslapped on live TV without a reaction, smells of cowardice

No wonder the fat trio picked him, their yellow too

Us having this opinion gets labelled a dummy spit yet that is all the original release was. Just a dummy spit from MWSE.

If they want to end the factional bull**** then grow up, stop with the pissy releases and show some professionalism. Even if they think the Penn's didn't, you always want to take the moral high road, not stoop the levels of who you are railing against. This release achieved nothing other than making life more difficult for Barrett who is deserves to come in with the opportunity to succeed.

Thank you. With a statement like this from them, there is no gain whatsoever.

1. It undermines a decision the club has made
2. It creates silo's and factionalism
3. It's poorly timed
4. It reekes of unprofessionalism

Honestly, how are people like this able to release what looks like official propoganda ? It's disgusting.

It's always important to send a message to those who have put themselves in positions of power that they are not unopposed, that they are not untouchable and that there are wolves waiting for them if they slip up.
So it must be done in even the safest seat in politics, so it must be done in business. Nothing is more destructive than an egotist who thinks the world supports him.

Completely disagree. You think this would happen in say The Banking Industry? The CEO makes a decision, and the nuffies come out and completely undermine it? It's unprofessional @Duff plain and simple mate.

The club right now doesn't need this. It needs stability now that the decision is made. If they had issue with this, call The Penn's out behind closed doors or raise it with them on behalf of Manly-Warringah Rugby League Football Club Board.

Don't undermine, and air all the laundry in public - PLEASE.
