From all reports Schuster can be a star 5/8 but he is still only 19 and will take time in first grade to hit his straps and play at a high level. Considering DCE is aging our window for a premiership with this current spine is 1-2 years. Bringing in Foran is the right move to make and he immediately fills a lot of weaknesses we have which is someone to organise and direct play alongside DCE and provide another solid kicking option to take pressure off DCE and make it harder for defenses to apply kick pressure. Our attack is way to predictable with Turbo currently out because defenses know everything will run through DCE and Manly has no other real threat outside of him.

Schuster will be able to provide a lot of utility off the bench as a ball playing backorder and build up his first grade experience. Once Foran retires he would naturally step into that 5/8 spot.

To further expand upon my point on how bad our kicking options are, these are the current kicking stats from the game vs Melbourne:

DCE: 17 kicks for 654 meters
Cust: 2 kicks for 34 meters

Now that is just ridiculous and is the main reason why we struggle so much for possession currently. No other team in the NRL has this much imbalance in kicking metrics. I know a lot of people death-ride DCE here but he literally gets no help from players around him.

Funa had a shocker in defence on debut also. The donkeys peppered him with bombs all game and we almost lost. But with more game time he is getting better and better. Same will happen with hoppa and shoe! And guaca if he can make the cut. Next year with these guys and a fit turbo is the only positive to look forward too now.

Not from me. I can wear young guys finding their way in 1st grade just can't handle hacks getting selected all the time and never improving.
Hope the club backs him in for the long term. Exciting times now Des has dropped the stale selections.
Yeah... but when there is no second grade competition and your side is still in contention to make the finals, it’s understandable why a coach goes with his match fit players who did it the previous year.

It’s quite hilarious to read the posts change on here after Hoppa debuted on the weekend. They’ve gone from waffling on about how much pace he would add to our attack to just being happy for him to get a run. I reckon there are quite a few on here who have never played a season of footy at any level.

Perhaps, the coach who has taken his sides to 5 Grand Finals knows best... who would have thunk?

How bout 5 weeks ago then? My point is the guy should of been playing fullback instead of Elliot then he would have lots of match fitness already and be better for it.
He only resumed full contact training 10 weeks ago biff he would have been well underdone both in fitness and potential physical injury if he come into the side any sooner than he has.

Anyway he is there now and the ball is in his court to show what he has and how he can improve

He gets the criticism because he is earning $1.3 million a season.

Good points. DCE was never going to give untried rookies ago at NRL especially having not played in 2 years when the side was still in contention for finals. It was disappointing the back up depth players could not get the job done, as well as the whole side really was making too many errors and not good enough to play finals this year.
Hopefully next year we can have better luck with injuries, been a **** last few years on that front

Ok geniuses then when does the kid play fmd gassed gassed gassed he has to start somewhere. You act like these guys dont train everyday and arent fit at all.
Match fitness is totally different, same as the step up from club level to say state of origin. You can see players blowing after 10 mins. Full back especially need to be fitter than almost any other position as they cover the most meters over the field and do the most running, especially those short bursts and turn and sprint type movements
Anyway, it was good to see him get a run and he will develop not doubt

DCE getting the blame for the young blokes not getting a run now @:D

(I know, it was a typo)

Cust has a leg injury and couldn’t kick. He kicked more in previous weeks. He did well to be out there

what? Don't get what you mean? What I intended was, based on his potential, you would think we would find a place for him in the 17 moving forward, what position I don't know as he hasn't played NRL level yet - but he is very well regarded so you think more than likely he will turn out to be a good one! Just have to wait and see until he gets a few games under his belt against men to see what position suits him best. 5/8 is a tough position, a lot of pressure on you with ball in hand and a lot of defensive work too, hopefully he kills it in both aspects

Simon, he was moved to 5/8 from the forwards in the juniors because that was seen as his ideal position. As a consequence he captained the side and was outstanding. His skill is too valuable to use in anything but the spine of a team. If he is as good as seems he will show skills well beyond the skills of Glen Stewart and Jake as ball players. Forwards expend energy in defence and penetration up the centre. This kid has potentially better ball playing skills than Foran. You don't waste that in the forwards unless as a hooker
