The Daly Cherrygraph

I will say this about DCE and all his contract talks - I am not sure there has ever been a quote or anything from him about it.

Even if you go to the whole backflip thing that was very much driven by the club trying to keep Foz etc
DCE did speak about interest from other clubs last month...

Interestingly, the off-contract veteran fielded expressions of interest upon becoming a free agent last November, evidence Cherry-Evans is the NRL’s version of NFL quarterback legend Tom Brady, who won a Super Bowl at age 43.

“I did have some options,” he said.

“Out of respect to the clubs, I’m not going to name them.

“I didn’t want to shop myself around, so I only spoke to a couple of clubs that I felt I might have an interest to play for.

“I’m very happy at Manly, so I didn’t really put myself out there, but the clubs I spoke to, I got a good indication of where they were at and what their futures looked like.

All our players need to be Weapons and not Weak in attack or defence

Premiership Winning Weapons like Steve Matai
Who was a strong attacking Weapon and a Strong defensive Weapon

Stevie Wonder
The Manly Attacking and Defensive Weapon of Mass Destruction !

No argument but with so much money tied up in Jake Tom and DCE we have a too many average players. The balance isn’t right. We lack workers and pure defensive grit. Our forward pack hamole aside is not scaring anyone. Our centres are not lyons and matai. Ie we have f”all weapons when the going gets tough

I think tom and Jake have already mentioned taking a pay cut, understanding money needs to be spent strengthening other positions. The captain should follow suit. I'm not asking any of them to take drastic unders, but their large wages has cost the strength of the team.

And no grand final was won this way.

Pay him a fair price and use all third party/length of service tricks to get there. It should be used as an opportunity to strengthen the squad, not to give him more money.

Without laying blame on DCE, the fact of the matter is, Manly has not looked even remotely close to a top 4 side for a decade under his captaincy and with him as our chief playmaker and leader.

I reiterate - in no way do I place Manly's misfortunes solely in his hands. But the fact of the matter is, whilst Manly's investment in Chez may have helped us avoid a wooden spoon at some point (maybe), this team, with or without him, will not genuinely contend for a title any time soon.

You can't win in the NRL if your team can't fkn defend! The fact that the Bulldogs have already become a far stronger team than us illustrates my point. Burton is good but not yet a DCE. Crighton is good, but not a Turbo. These guys aren't the reason why they are now better than us. It's because all 17 guys go out and defend their line like champions.

Does further DCE investment somehow buy us defensive resolve? If not, then let him walk if the guy needs to take another million at this stage in his career. It's not like it will cost us success. The results speak for themselves
One could just as easily ask if cutting him loose suddenly buy us defensive resolve though? His salary is not the equivalent of 17 players that defend their line like champions.

Hypothetically speaking, if we freed up 800k- 1 mil and had Large and/or Walsh running around in the halves as regular first graders, they’d be upgraded pretty quick smart. Then you’ve got factor in that spending the money elsewhere requires (a) available quality and (b) available quality willing to sign with Manly.

The fact that the Dogs have guys like Salmon and Mann and Haywood, defending like champions in spite of their lack of talent, kinda undermines the notion that we need DCE’s salary to sign better players across the squad. We just need a coach with a more measured tactical approach.

I fear that all that will happen if we cut DCE loose, is our rubbish defence will persist but we’ll score less points and botch all our last tackle options and get beaten more often.

Two options really

1) offer him a decent contract for one year after this one, but certainly not 1.1 or 1.2 million.
2) offer him two years , on a lower contract.

Use the marquee allowance , use the TPA’s

He stays , all good , he goes , we move on.

Many club greats didn’t play their last games with Manly , sad but a fact of life.

But remember this , for those of you saying “ throw the bank at him” DO NOT WHINGE ONCE about our **** team because we can’t afford any superstars.

I can see it now , “ all we can sign is second grade plodders with arthritis “.

I’m a DCE fan, unlike many on here , I don’t bag him , he try’s his guts out week in week out.

BUT he’s 37

Next year 38

The following year 39

Think about that when you want to throw the piggy bank at him.

I’ve thought about it and my arm’s well and truly cocked with the mother of all piggy banks…if we let him walk over an additional year because of a number on a birth certificate, we are idiots.

Souths played hardball with Reynolds and he played in a GF, whilst Souths missed the 8, eventually lost their coach and narrowly avoided the spoon. If he plays like a million dollar half, pay him to do so.

How are the bulldogs better than us exactly? Didn’t we beat them in the finals last year?
