Supposed "Crisis at Manly" Megathread

Its so sad that a clique has formed at the club and is dividing the team.

To hear players openly questioning the decision makers at the club is really sad.

It has just fed ammunition to our enemies and undermined what is a good chance to win this year.

Just a thought and I might be totally wrong.

If Steve Matai says that he has an offer to leave to the Warriors who categorically denied that last week, could it just be that its another club who has offered him bickies, maybe a club where they are about to announce that one of their centres are going to France to play rugger. Just saying, I most likely have it wrong.

My understanding is that no club can negotiate with a contracted player till the contract transfer window opens.

Where the hell are you Greenturd? Are you not supposed to be re-inforcing this rule?

The members of this club deserve so much better from the guys who are openly dissenting.

I get that players have taken less money to stay together but the current group cant overlook that we have had to shed very popular players to keep this core group together.

I urge the guys to put the club first cause thats what the fans want!!

Really this whole saga needs to brought to a head.

Its up to Dave Perry, Killer, Kingy and Tooves to stand up.

Maybe its a case of "if anyone wants to go, the must go now".

Those that stay can push on with our Premiership tilt and those that go have our blessing.

New rule: Any player that talks to the media other than club captains will be fined $20K

Where's the proof they have taken less money? Their managers? Them?

This sacrifice argument suggests every player should always except more money every time.

Of course being in a premiership winning club by the beaches, near friends and family counts for nothing with this rationale.

What about the things money cannot buy?

From my understanding Matai's first request for a release was several months ago. The way I am reading it Matai was prepared to go, take a big pay day on offer from the Warriors for his final contract and free up the cash to keep Gift. The club has said no and this is what may have pissed off the players in question over the last couple of months. From what Foz was saying they seem to think the club never intended to keep Gift, or make him an offer, even if the cash was available to do so. It's all gone way too far now. Players are still complaining even after the club has put out a statement. If they aren't given a gag order shortly I'll be very surprised. The club needs to take control and rein in it's employees.

There's no going back now, Glenn has signed with Souths and can't renege on the deal.

Reportedly on 850k this year what would of been a reasonable offer?

If Manly offered Glenn 300-350k would he of accepted it or more importantly would the NRL?

A precedent was set when the Eels tried to sign Folau. The NRL deemed the offer was not his true value and rejected the contract.

I think the same would have applied with Glenn.

He can renege, it was good enough for Tedesco, Luke Lewis and about a dozen others over the last 3 seasons.

I think they did it before round 13 which was the cut off point.

KIWI EAGLE:

I haven't read a lot on it, but don't need to see players making those kind of quotes, quite disappointing

A lot of it could be taken out of context however, who knows.

unfortunately its not 🙁

The article on the NRL site is longer. This from Kieran:

Asked if the issues were at board level, Foran replied, "yeah, I'd say so".
"I can't elaborate on the issues, I don't really know the issues to be honest with you but I guess there are issues."

He said he had not yet taken his concerns to club management.

This from DCE (does this sound like a future captain, I reckon so)

"Halfback Daly Cherry-Evans – one of Manly's retention priorities and reportedly part of the reason the club was unable to make Stewart a competitive offer – said that while there is "definitely stuff to sort out" at the club in terms of contracts, he wouldn't be drawn on any specific player's situation.

"We've got a lot of people coming off contract soon so of course it's a hot topic," Cherry-Evans said.

However he denied he had had any contact from Parramatta, and added that as he was contracted to Manly through to the end of 2015 it would be "ridiculous" to speculate where he would be beyond that.

Cherry-Evans said it was "great" that the board had opted not to grant players early releases from their contracts – which seemingly put him at odds with teammate Foran.

"We've got a great roster, there's no secret in the success this side's had so to keep everyone involved for as long as possible, then that's great," he said.

He said there were no issues with regards to the mood at the club.

"Personally – we're winning games of rugby league. That's the best part about rugby league is when you're winning games. A winning culture is something that catches on to everyone. I feel as though every players' got that at the moment," he said.

"I think there's been adversity at this club for a long time and we always find a way to get out through the other end. I think this is just another speed bump in the club and we'll continue to move forward and continue to hopefully go out there and be successful on the field which is what matters most."

You are damned if you do are damned if you don't. I remember years ago .. .. unsure of exact amounts but something like this .. when Vautin left .. the Club had offered him half the previous contract value from $100,000 to $50,000 (something like that). But it was mentioned for the next 20 years. Maybe Manly could only offer Gifty $400,000 and his manager had said he would not accept that so no offer officially tabled. OK I have no idea but nice to know the situation.

Cherry played a very straight bat with the 101 Manly contract questions throw his way. Well done DCE/Sid/Chez/Daly 🙂

This is becoming ridiculous. Love the team and all the players, but please stop crying poor. You guys should keep quiet, keep it in house and be very, very thankful you are in such fortunate positions.

There is a premiership there for the taking.Do any of these players seriously think Gift would want the opportunity thrown away because of petulant squabbling.

Next year and onwards can be sorted out after this year is done and dusted.

As a fan of this club for many years before you arrived, and will still be for many years after you leave, I expect better from all involved.

Blaming the players is harsh - they are like a family (and like a family sometimes things get a bit heated and not everyone gets along). Although, like others I'm very disappointed in Foran. I have not admired and respected a player as much, who consistently puts his body on the line and plays such hard tough uncompromising footy, since 2V. Foran's the key to our club moving forward IMO. But perhaps this shows how bad things really are...

Blaming the board is also harsh as they are doing the impossible - trying to balance present and future player roster LEGITIMATELY by staying under the salary cap.

I BLAME THE ADMINISTRATORS OF THE NRL.
THIS GREAT SPORT IS THE MOST POORLY MANAGED BILLION $ SPORT IN THE COUNTRY, IF NOT THE WORLD!!! (bit dramatic I know, but its true)

The long term player allowance should have been addressed years ago. Whoever is responsbile for setting up the current per club allowance rather than per player should be immediately sacked as clearly they have no fkn idea. Allowing one clubman to remain at their chosen club is a fundamentally sound business decision for EVERYONE concerned (players, fans, coaches, owners, sponsors, tell me one stakeholder who does not benefit - apart from mercenary clubs like rorters and dogs who may have to actually develop their own juniors for a change). This has obvious rewards for clubs and players alike, not to mention the loyal fans (isn't the idea to increase, promote and encourage NRL membership?!!)

Marketing spiel should say "Supoprt your NRL club today, become a member and watch your favourite loyal long term players get shafted!!"

The fact that no action was taken against Greenturd who clearly violated the law by approaching dog$ler while still contracted to Manly is a joke (i firmly believe he should have been stood down immediately). This has set a precedent, clubs will continue to flout the law and entice contracted players and coaches to break contracts with seemingly no consequences. At least 3 clubs appear to be in violation of the law - Parra, Dogs and Warriors.

The fact that the NRL still hasnt cottoned onto the fact that allowing players and coaches to sign with other clubs mid season is detrimental to the game and fanbase shows just how incompetent they are. I mean c'mon its not bloody rocket science. Why are these idiots in charge, honestly?!

My teenage daughter would be able to manage this sport better...

How about the article in the paper by Dean Ritchie today "looking for the Wolfman"?
Can you imagine Dean ringing people to find out where David is? Can you see him calling someone like me ! "Hi Donny it's Dean Ritchie here"....("Hi Dean")..."Hey Donny you wouldn't know where the Wolfman is would you".....("why would you like to know Dean")....."because I want to call him and ask him questions"......("ok do you have his number Dean")....."I did get one but he is not answering"......("oh ok Dean, I can decipher that message for you, he doesn't want to talk to you mate so I can't help you! Bye bye")
You can't find him because he is not actually missing, he doesn't want to neither does he have too speak to journo's. The so called "close source", Dean spoke to isn't close enough, I have known exactly where David was last week and this week, because like his team mates I'm someone he trust. Geoff is on top of it all. The senior coaching staff and his friends know where he is. Most importantly .... He is well and having a rest after being tortured by me all year......again. What a crap article from Dean.........again!
😎
