Snake is definitely retiring

Don't worry, Zorba was a member of the 73 team. His inspirational tales of the "toughest most brutal grand final ever" will inspire the team and staff to ever greater heights.

Why not ... those stories would at least be true.

And I don't think any of the coaching or support staff have been involved in a Manly premiership either...

Not a Manly premiership but Cartwright played in Penriths 1st premiership side and was asst coach to Lang for their 2nd premiership. He was also on the coaching staff of the Cowboys premiership.

And Bozo has had a bit of Premiership experience.

It's so sad to see our three champions HAVE to retire because their bodies just aren't up to it anymore. I'm sure they would have loved to play more games in their beloved maroon and white just like we would have loved to see them play. I wish them all the best in the future and hope they get they can still be a part of our team in the future.

Ohh, what a way to go out! Without the chance for 1 more Brookvale appearance. Even if just for 20 mins. Not to be.

All Hail The Prince of Brookvale. The Baron of Barrenjoey, Marquis de Manly Vale.

2 Premierships, WCC, SOO and Australian Rep. Scorer of Tries 163. 70% strike ratio. 6th highest try scorer in the NRL, NSWRL history.
The most consistenly exciting player and crowd draw-card at the Fortress since Bozo. I've loved every minute of it.

Remember that try he scored in State of Origin off the Carney pass? MWSE's opening try scorer in the 2011 GF?

Memories for a Lifetime.

I don't think there was one person on this forum that wished anything but the best for Snake. I'd go so far as to say that 100% of posters wanted to see him go out on his own terms. He is a legend and my favourite player.

But,

there are a lot of us that are realists. The point is to win football games. If a players form works against that point then either fix it or it is time to move on. I for one did not want to see him limping around/or off the field anymore. Quite frankly it made me sad to watch that.

The end of an era, and what an era it was. I admire Brett on so many levels. His efforts on the field were absolutely amazing. He had speed, brains, ball skills, vision and leadership qualities.

I've said it before, but I can't imagine the heights his career would have hit if not for injuries and off field nonsense.

I feel sad that we won't get to see him take the field again, but I am honoured to have been around to witness his career and the brilliant things he produced on the ground over the years.

He was a champion, but funnily enough...that description doesn't seem fitting enough. In his prime, Brett was the best fullback I have seen. Manly blinkers aside, he was simply awesome. Awe inspiring on and off the field.

Best of luck in the future, Brett. I hope the club keeps you around in some respect.

Yeah, mate...the sad reality of football business. It's a bit like retiring your favourite hunting dog or horse once they slow down a bit. It's the last thing anyone wants, but it's necessary for the good of the endeavour.

A bitter pill, but one that must be swallowed. Unfortunately.

When it comes to the crunch he is a manly legend and id love to see them do sonething. Id love them to get heaps of the old club backtogether and celebrate the last decade. Many many stars probably didnt get the send off we would like, but using this as a way to say goodbye to snake and skivvy would be ideal.

But this type of fanfare is a thing of the past. With clubs, players and managers treating every dollar as a business expect it to disappear, as it has mainly in most workplaces in oz. he might get a lap if brookie at best. I sure hope he and stevie do

Once players had testimonials seasons where the club held money raising events for retirees but with the cap,and players wanting every cent now, the feelings get lost. Older players once took less cash to stay on and received a balance up through that. Some even donated large amounts to charity which doesnt fit in with having to set myself up for football mentality that exists today

They will probably hold something internally, but like most retirees if you want a party, you would think ye will need to arrange your own.

Id like to see something happen for our legends but can see why its unlikely. Snake will be remembered fondly by thousands of people which is a pretty cool legacy considering he plays sport for a living.

The storm stil seem to manage events such as this but they rarely are spending there own money

In those hunting dog and horse examples the beloved animal is typically dispatched swiftly. I would hope that champion fullbacks get better treatment.

The other side of this is despite their legend status it's a lesson to anyone in recruitment , when players get to an age they should be signed only one year at a time.

I don't begrudge Skiv and Snake the money but we are a year behind in the rebuild due to it.

Flogging the dead horse again, wouldn't have been nice if that the NRL could have come out and agreed any payout to these legends of NRL would not be included in the salary cap. Would have made the negotiation simpler and afforded ourselves to recruit accordingly
