PRE-GAME DISCUSSION: Storm v Manly [Round 16, 2020]

Really, would the inclusion of Albert really make such a big difference?

Not expecting miracles there Hibyemama. First game is always going to be tough (except for Toovey). But he has to start some time and the longer the delay the more the frustration. I think he will offer something immediately to the backline that has been seriously missing since Turbo and Walker have been out. And sometimes that extra spark is all that's needed to get a little confidence back in the team. Besides having lost 7 of the last 9 games, anything will be an improvement.

keep going with
6. Schuster
7. DCE
8. AFB
9. Cust
10. M Tapau
11. C Sironen
12. J Thompson
13. Jake T

14. L Croker
15. T Paseka
16. S Keppie
18. Haumole Olakau'atu

Some might not agree but I'd even be tempted for another change. For mine, Thommo has been almost a complete non-event in 2020. I'd be very tempted to drop him to the bench (at least) and play Olakau'a'tu in the back row.

Thommo has toughness and experience, no-one can doubt that. But Haumole is somewhat explosive, and can offload.

Skilful chip & chase by Haumole @ 3:43 in the ZDC highlights

Some very good players coming through - hopefully, blossoming into a gun Sea Eagles team in the near future...

Don't get me wrong about Thommo. He's a great clubman and has been a very good player for us over the past 3 years. But like Jorge, the speed of the NRL these days has passed him by. He'll have a couple of decent years with St Helens (that's if he's even allowed to go to England because of the pandemic), but I think his time in the NRL is just about done.

Just for the record on Thommo in 2020.....

Average metres - 88.8
Average tackles - 28.8
Tackle breaks - 18
Offloads - 5
Line breaks - 1
Try assists - 0
Tries - 2

Compare that to Curtis Sironen this year (both have played 13 games)

Average metres - 103
Average tackles - 31
Tackle breaks - 27
Offloads - 17
Line breaks - 4
Try assists - 2
Tries - 2

The only thing Siro hasn't out-performed him in is that they've both scored two tries.

And Siro (like the rest of the team) Seems a bit down on form this year as well

Personally I think the pack needs a shake up, both positional and player.

If it were up to me, I'd move Jake into the front row with AFB and play Marty from the bench. I'd have Waddell and Olakau'atu in the back row with Thommo to the bench and Siro playing lock.

Siro can handle the tackling up the middle, and as a former 5/8 he has better ball skills than Jake so it wouldn't be as bad if he gets in at first receiver occasionally (he can also kick if need be). At lock I think Jake has a tendency to overplay his hand a bit while in the front row his main job other than tackling would be just to tuck the ball under the arm and run. It would also mean he gets a rest every now and then and might be less prone to giving away 6 again's because he won't be so knackered from all the tackling he does. And while Waddell probably isn't the best choice (though probably the best we have right now, and definitely better than Jetski), with Siro at lock and Thommo on the bench we'd need another back rower and I'd rather keep Paseka and Marty for the prop rotation.

That's just my thoughts on it anyway.

Interesting stats Holden. Of course I'd like to know the sources of your information, and that's not criticism, just a desire to verify that it is bona fide information. It certainly confirms my opinion of Siro, who I feel is one of our more important forwards, and worth the pennies Manly pays him.
