Play him where he can effect the result. Give him the rest of the season at 5/8. It might escape some people’s attention but we lose every week so Tom missing a few tackles and learning his craft matters not.We are now officially the worst defensive side in the comp. Tom missing a few learning the rigours of first grade is irrelevant.

The only positive out of this nightmare is that experimentation can occur with no downside. If you don’t blood him now he will be learning when results do matter.Hodkinson is done. In real terms Tom Wright is our only decent proposition at 5/8. Use his talents.
I agree - I’d rather him learn and make mistakes when the season is already gone than do it next year when we are trying for a fresh start.

Now is exactly the time to play him. We are not playing finals and have nothing to lose. You seen the size of this kid? He’s a powerhouse!
Whats the alternative? Start playing him next year when the results really matter. Let’s have another Croker/Walker 5/8 experiment and risk another season being flushed.

The rest of this year is about trying things and seeing who can cut it. Another 10 games of Brown, Wright , Parker will be a very very bad joke.

Ponga was eased in because the Cows were winning comps, not fighting off a spoon.
So you don't rate Walkz at 5/8 after we won playing him in that position against Broncs ,and storm ..seriously !!

The most impressive part for me was not so much the try. It was the quick hands to get his outside player down the right flank (something the commentators highlighted) followed by the searching run across field that put Turbo in space, a better line from turbo back towards the post would have resulted in a try alternatively a better pass to Kelly rather than the one hand hook pass would have provided the same result. He showed variety and his speed and game smarts created chances for both himself and others
Yes he has nice hands and once he gets a few guys running lines and knowing what he is capable of he should get some more value out of that part of his game. That try just shows the defence they can’t afford to hang off him, so them committing opens up his passing game more once those around him develop trust in his ability.

Agree .... but I am seriously over this if coached right comment in every post ... (not specifically you) .... who does everybody thing has been in charge of coaching for the past 3 years for Kelly, Fainu, Anderson, Paseka, Tom, Parker ...... it is because of the coaching they are getting at Manly that we are raving about them not the lack of it ...

Agreed Woodsie, but that seems to be only at the junior level. That coach out Blacktown way (not the Eagles Blacktown coach) who coaches one of the school sides and brought through some of these kids may offer something Manly haven't considered. And then there was that coach who won us the Holden Cup two years back. Just because some rugby league players were champion performers, doesn't mean they are likely to be any better than the average ex player or maybe even x reserve grader as coaches. There are examples in other sports of people who have never played the particular sports becoming successful coaches. Its a different skill.

Bellamy for example was at best a competent centre-five eighth who spent more time as a utility and often reserve grader. Bennett played for Queensland a couple of times as a winger but never player ARL. Yet they are the two standout coaches in the last 20 years. Griffin at Penrith never player ARL and only had a couple of years playing with Brothers in Brisbane. Often the best coaches were lower graders in playing the game. Our search, if we forego the Barrett experiment, should look to some of the coaches of second or third tier sides who are successful.

Hodkinson played the second half against Storm. It was 2 all at half time. We scored 22 points with Walker in the centres or in the bin.He also failed in 2016. One game against the broncos means nothing.

My opinion is based on the fact Walker was Dally M centre of the year, is a star in that position and Wright needs to play the rest of the year in a position where we have no other real options. There is no downside. The season is over. Hodkinson M Wright Brown are giving us nothing. They could play 20 years and not score a try and look dangerous like Tom did last night.

Funny - I was having this exact conversation yesterday. Most coaches, across all sports, tend to be average players who only succeeded at all because of their passion for the game and possibly higher then normal game-related intellect and understanding. In other words, players who had to try harder than others just to be there in the first place. Anthony Seibold, Bellamy, Wayne Bennett...

God we need a win !

With some good coaching, I see a bit of Cameron Munster in Tom Wright.

I think Hodko needs to go back to being depth, or our utility when the team is fully fit.

Secondly, with Walker returning, time to set our backline for next season:

01. Tom Trbojevic
02. Jorge Taufua
03. Brian Kelly
04. Dylan Walker
05. Moses Suli
06. Tom Wright
07. Daly Cherry-Evans
08. Addin Fonua-Blake
09. Manase Fainu
10. Marty Taupau
11. Joel Thompson
12. Kelepi Tanginoa
13. Jake Trbojevic

14. Trent Hodkinson
15. Taniela Paseka
16. Lloyd Perrett
17. Shaun Lane

If we lose with that team, we have some serious problems. There's quality 1 through 17 in that.

I would have Sironen in the 17 every day over Perrett. Likewise Jade Anderson over lazy Suli.

So Api is out replaced with Fainu? don't think so. perhaps onto the bench at some stage.

Kelly still had the opportunity to cover defend . Cover defence is part of the game .
Kelly missed more tackles than any other back in the game
Kelly has been known for his defensive lapses in the past
Be humble and accept those facts your self and not be ingnorant

Kelly is better than Suli thou imo who cannot slide laterally to save himself..

Trouble with Kelly is every 2nd or 3rd week, he seems to have vaso all over his hands and drops too many balls. Then one every 2 or 3 weeks, flashes of absolute brilliance.

He should have a quick word with Cam Bancroft or David Warner about the best grade of sandpaper to use.

Suli has just turned 20 and he has started the season late due to the issues he had with the dogs when he was released for not turning up to training .
Suli looks to be carrying more weight than he should be as he is obviously has not reached peak fitness as yet .
Time will tell

Suli is strong hard running type with little else. Suits the wing.Kelly is a footballer with plenty of strings to his bow and needs to be closer to the ball. Real good centre in the making.
