Cleary’s playing chance of playing Rd1 revealed as Broncos fume at NRL over Reynolds: Blog with Hoops

THE NRL launches back into orbit on Thursday night with a hundred narratives guaranteed to catch fire once the new season starts.

The premiers Penrith are adamant gun halfback Nathan Cleary will be given right up until game day to prove he’s good to go for the season-opener against Manly.

The Panthers no. 7 had a right shoulder reconstruction at the end of last season and was initially scheduled to be sidelined until round three.

But as we know with the champion Penrith and NSW halfback, where there’s a will there’s a way.

Cleary has timed his rehabilitation to the millisecond to the point where there’s every chance he’s out there to take on Tommy Turbo and the Sea Eagles.

Can the Panthers become only the second team in 25 seasons to go back-to-back?

If they’re going to do it they need Clive Churchill Medallist Nathan fit and firing for most of the season."

This year has a different feel Mark. We haven’t traditionally put in good showings in trials either.
In the trials we looked focused and gritty. Then obviously when the players moved around in the 2nd half things got sloppy but I was impressed with our first halves.

I’m expecting a different Manly start to the season… fingers crossed.
I applaud your view and sincerely hope you are right.

Of course he’ll play all smokes and mirrors

to beat riff at night in wet we need

cleary not to play. is he fit
foz to be manlys best as he has the best short kicking game to even out possession from the inevitable mistakes
jake is a target as first receiver due to his lack of pace. if foz can take more of these balls and get manly attacking from closer to the ad line we can use attacking kicks. currently most of our kicks are from behind play, shielded, without momentum and relying on opposition mistakes rather than our skill and pressure to turn our fortunes

we need to introduce attacking kicking and not retreat to safety to hoik the up and under from a secure buffer zone. we rarely ask questions with the boot and this is a real issue in terms of playing end to end footy as we rarely get the upper hand from the kick exchanges at the end

a couple of hail mary 40/20 attempts and one croker kick from dummy half every 2 weeks is not cutting it in the big league. so if cleary plays , me anxious. him kick smart
We just need to play smart, finish our sets kick to the corners and then turn defence into attack. Keep them guessing by kicking early on rushing defence and basically just grinding them out the game. Its a great test for us and if cleary is out well we should have it in the bag. Focus on Luai and thats all they'll have

Personally, I think Cleary is a chance of missing the game. You can bet if he was right to go, the Panthers would be saying he is an outside chance, in an attempt to ambush us. That he is reported as good to go, says they may be planning to give him another week to be safe, but talk up his inclusion so our preparation is wasted around what he might do...

Of course, it may be that there are no mind games being played and he will run out on Thursday.

Great first game for us to be playing. This is the most excited I’ve been for our round 1 match since we played Brisbane in round 1 during 2013.

That was a great game. We overcame a halftime deficit to win by 8 points
Yeah, it's a great honour for us to kick of the NRL season against the Premiers. No doubt it'll be a massive audience watching this on 9, Fox/Kayo, been playing this game in my head for a couple of days now. Time for the real stuff now, bring it on...

I'm not super confident of our chances for this one. Our pack is looking a bit thin with all the outs, particularly in the second row. The plus side is it's a chance for our forwards to test themselves out early against the benchmark.

I am not super confident, but I am quietly confident we can grind out this game. Yes our depth will be tested, but they have also lost quite a few quality players from last season. Manly by 7.

Heard the players on Thursday will be offered floatation devices so they reduce the risk of drowning. Evidently the ground at Penrith is covered in water. If rain persists chance game will be postponed or abandoned, that then asks the question when do you play it or fit it in being the draw doesn't allow for that.

No idea how we'll go but hope we show plenty of grit and grind.
I don't think Penrith will be a chance of back to back this year. Too many young kids who've climbed their mountain.
No idea why they would consider risking Cleary in Round One of a very long season.
And ....
Play in the wet you wussy buggers!!!!

If the ground is sodden and slippery underfoot, their is no way they will risk Cleary, even though he'll want to play. All's it takes is a missed tackle gone wrong or a slip and fall that lands you on the point of your shoulder. It's only the start of the NRL marathon, Cleary the coach will know this.

With the covid .. can we assume that players not named in the 21 can be called in if players test positive pre game?
