Other NRL games round 1

OK for Storm......

Try 1 was legit. Munster is a fine player in every sense. If Manly had him with DCE...Origin last year showed what can happen.

Try 2 - pass to Addo-Carr on Storm 10m Def line to open up break downfield was blatantly forward - based on the Manly v Pmatta turbo pass last year that we lost the game on. Then, Pap-sonic pass infield to Olam on Bunnies 10m was fwd too by same definition. 2 Fwd passes missed in 1 set.

Try 3 - pass from Pap-sonic again to open up bunnies Def - fwd (by same definition). Then infield pass back to Paps even MORE fwd - which is EASILY seen by the horitonzal grading of the turf about 3-4m from the 10m line - you can see lighter coloured turf - pass is thrown in lighter coloured turf, caught in darker coloured turf in front of Pap-sonic - he caught it about 2m in front of where pass happened.

Try 4 - legit speed from Pap-sonic.

So Riddle me this - Manly got done twice in first half of Trial vs Tigers for a fwd pass from Dummy Half. (I haven't reviewed 2nd half in as much detail, but plan to over weekend) - and neither of those 2 passes had the same source/recipient differential when it comes to where passer/receiver had ball in this game. Will the fwd pass be as 'liberal' if a team is not a contender? Sure Melb were moving (fast) when they let their passes out, but consistency if the issue here.

I don't give a hoot about either team - but given how subjective the rulings have become with 6-agains, and the power bestowed on Refs with those same 6-again rulings, i'll be fkd if i'm not going to use games with 2 teams I don't give a flying Fk about, to judge the consistency of the refereeing - because in my mind, it has become far too obvious that a Ref has greater power to decide an outcome of a game than ever before.

If I were a Souths fan - I'd be pisssssssed right now. I actually dislike the vermin a lot, special treatment from NRL hierarchy and all with Burgess/Inglis vs Matai/Snake sitch.

Just don't expect Manly to get the same benefit of the doubt as the 'expected' top-4 the NRL wants (ie Rooters/Storm/Rabbits/Eels), and the Refs seem intent on giving the hoi-polloi the result NewsCorp has told us is forthcoming.

Watch the replay - tell me i'm dreaming....please

The amount of passes Cook threw ( and throws every game ) from dummy half that are forward is bordering on ridiculous. As you say, they should be the easiest ones to pick up.

Another simple one is players that are tackled crawling forward and to the side of the marker, if the tackler tries to spread themselves or hang on a bit, they risk the penalty, sorry six again.

Buggered if I know what the touchies are meant to be looking at if they can't pick these up.

Golden moment was when Olam had to restart play after a stoppage by the bunker. And Atkins can clearly be heard saying ‘make sure your foot touches the ball’. Que Olam plays the ball, foot is miles from the ball. Vossy did call it, and highlight it. But then as programmed they laugh it off, declaring ’You gotta love this game of Rugby league, don’t ya". I was just sitting there thinking this game has become beyond farcical.

Last night's game was a tale of two halves.

Melbourne easily won the first before the referee led Souffs came back in the second.

IMO all these new rules do is give the referees more scope to manipulate the outcome of games. But I bet there will be 2-3 teams, Manly among them, who won't get the benefit of that.

This is the real concern. The new rules have made it so much easier refereed to be subjective in their interpretations. When was the last time we got the rub of the green? I seriously can't recall.

Credit where it's due. Bellamy is a genius.
Worth pointing out that with the Storm it starts from the owners down. They have had consistency in many key areas for nearly 20 years.

They are one of, if not the most resourced club (including highest amount of registered TPAs). They have an excellent feeder/pathways system and as far as I know their football manager is regarded as the best in the business.

It is all well and good to want/expect Des to fix everything... but methinks there is a reason other coaches were not interested in taking the job when it was available.

The bottom line , as with the others a hugely rich benefactor in Gerry Ryan , the owner of Jayco caravans who makes 50% of all caravans sold in Australia each year ( a billion dollar annual business ).

Rorters , Souffs , Donkeys , Drizzle

All the same .

Just tried to watch the replay. After 20 minutes the contest was over, probably 10 really. Do i wait around to the eventual even up that is the NRL. I know its coming otherwise its going to be 60 nil .

Its been like watching a highlight package, not a contest. Ah well i suppose thats what the broadcasters want. Its early days but it was so predictable the game was heading down this path. I did not find myself absorbed in the contest at any time

Channel 9 only has scripted reality tv. They have bugger all else. Why do we sell our rights to people who only know one way.
The highest bidder is not necessarily better for the long term game

A highlights package is exactly what it is. No substance to the game anymore. They have ruined it.

Watching it live ( I won’t bother with too many more other games ) it was clear that the Drizzle were far and away the better team , that first 20, with a number of restarts ( and some luck ) was electric!!

However, you just knew they wouldn’t allow these two teams to end 56-4 so just like that , 4-5 convenient 6 agains and the Bunnies are back.

Without a shadow of a doubt we now have scripted , reality style , Rugba Leeg.

BUT is that just for the favs , or is it going to be shared equally ???

Is this the new salary cap ???

We’ll know soon but I fear it’s scripted purely based on TV ratings and which teams rate the best as they’ll want them winning and **** the rest they are just cannon fodder.

Saw the game last night and loved it .

Life has always been about the survival of the fittest and the finest

And the Storm once again evolved without their best player and proved what a fine team they are

I thought storm were outstanding. Yes, those repeat sets helped for sure but they still were electric. They run so hard and with energy. They have a great spine but also an amazing all representative pack that always gets them on the front foot.

Rabbits ball retention and errors cost them, hope that’s an area des has worked on,. Repeated pressure and ball in hand with the faster game will help teams dramatically

I don't think Souths were too bad either, they showed they also will be a contender for top 4. I thought Mitchell was very dangerous at the back.

For Manly to be top 4 I think we are still one or two good players short. Someone like Cheeze at hooker to interchange with Faniu and a back rower with more strike and metres like a Matterson instead of Jetski and a fit Tom and I could see us up there, but i think its going to be a tough year

2 things I noticed in the second half that got Souths back into the game:

1. They started spreading the ball wide through Marshall, who drew defenders before passing, creating an overlap on the left side.

2. They started getting repeat sets at crucial times. I'm pretty sure the only repeat sets they got in the first half were on the first tackle (Melbourne seemed happy to give them away on the first tackle) so not as beneficial as getting a repeat set on the 3rd or 4th tackle.

Sometime before October 6, 2013. That was the night a blatant forward pass in front of the referee was just ignored. Its been downhill ever since.
