Open letter to Twent Barrett

Mark, I assume that you like me are a parent.

Now we don't know the ins and outs of what's gone on with Hastings over the past 12 months but I don't see why Trent would come out and say what he did if there wasn't plenty of reasons - he's known him a long time and thought he could sort him out, we don't know what behavioural clauses, counselling obligations etc were in his contract.

So taking the parent analogy - if we tell our kids that there'll be consequences if they don't toe the line and give them chance after chance what do we have to do?
We need to follow through with whatever form of discipline we threatened them with don't we?
They might whinge and say they'll never do it again, learnt their lesson etc but if we've heard it all before and their siblings have heard it all before we don't have a choice but to follow through for the betterment of the family fabric.
Then say, Grandma or Aunty come down on us - he's just a lad that's feeling his way in the world, don't be so harsh, he'll try real hard to be good etc - and we soften our stance and Grandma goes home and then he starts up again.

Yes, Barrett may have painted himself into a corner with this one but hopefully wins the end game - he's on a hiding to nothing if he picks him in the next few weeks just because we're not winning - that'll really help Jackson's ego and give him the green light to continue what he's doing or not doing.
I agree yes should mean yes and no should mean no and once a decision is made then stick to it.

Yeah except in this instance Barrett isn't a parent, he's the coach of a professional football team who is paid to get them winning football games. Right now he's letting personality clashes and/or behind the scenes agendas get in the way of putting his best available side on the park.

I don't think Hastings is the Messiah who will turn our team around and suddenly make them premiership contenders. But he is a damn sight better option than Lachlan Croker ever will be and our side would be 100% better off with Hastings in the halves. With Croker as our 5/8 we have a 12 man attack and 12 1/2 man defence.

As an NRL coach Trent Barrett is losing more than he is winning and regardless that he signed a contract extension last year.....if he doesn't turn things around then there is going to come a time, maybe even this year or at the end of it, when the club will cast him aside and go in a different direction.....with a different coach.

I miss the good old days of being able to give a kid a swift kick up the arse or back hander to sort them out. If they have a problem with a teammate throw them in the ring to sort it out, no gloves. And guess what, problem resolved overnight.

Now all we get is this PC bull****, smoke and mirrors. How the hell is that an improvement on how things were done?
If kids aren't meant to be hit, then why are they so soft?

That wouldn't have been easy for Uate to say. The NRL and the media talk a lot of **** about depression and player welfare then rubbish a team and individuals into, to quote Mike Tyson, Bolivian!

I totally agree Loobs, 90% of the Rugby League media & the extra grubby "2 bob" ambulance chaser hacks like Hooper & co are such hypocrites. They pretend to care when it comes to Greg Inglis and his mental health (A bloke who has had a pretty charmed existence as far as media support goes considering his discretions) and anything to do with an NRL sponsored #RUOK round. But constantly pick at a guy like DCE simply because he is highly paid and seems to handle the criticism, they do this without checking facts or having any solid evidence when trashing his character and will do this again when it comes to his Origin selection/non selection. They constantly sink the boot into the poor bloke talking about how players don't like him because of his personality. Ironically they even started to question DCE's character in regard to not getting on in a team environment & compared him to Hastings in this whole debacle and did to him exactly what they were accusing Manly of doing to Hastings. It is not right how much DCE cops even from our own fans sometimes, when the bloke is actually what the idiots like Greenberg and the NRL claim to want every NRL player to be like, a good family man that pretty much stays out of trouble and can put on a master class in the right conditions. I think the Rugby League world hates him because he is smarter than most of them and they don't like that. If he ever cracks under the pressure and ends up in rehab all of those idiots will have blood on their hands. Where is Greenberg to #talkDCEup.

In one of his books, Kent said that DCE came off as a bit pompous early on in his career because of bad advice. To the players and the media he's always been a great, professional bloke.

Manly Sea Eagles coach Trent Barrett has fronted the media ahead of his side's clash against the Newcastle Knights on Friday night.

Last time the two clubs meet (round one), Mitchell Pearce kicked a field goal in golden point to claim a dramatic victory, but after seven rounds of the 2018 season, both the Knights and Manly look vastly different.

The biggest change in the Newcastle camp is the potentially season-ending injury to playmaker Mitchell Pearce, while the Sea Eagles have easily been the most controversial side throughout the NRL season. However, it is only April, and before we know it there should be juicy gossip from other clubs that will push all the Manly drama into the background once more.

TRENT BARRETT DISCUSSES HOW MANY PLAYERS HE HAS TO CHOOSE FROM AFTER JACKSON HASTINGS' OMISSION
"There's a few teams going through some tough periods at the moment, we're not alone in that area," Barrett told reporters on Thursday.

"For our club, it's extremely important that we put on a good show tomorrow night.

"Outside our development list, we've probably got 22 or 21 (players to choose from), we're down to the bare minimum.

"We've still got some room to move, a couple of spots available.

"Obviously the (salary) cap stuff is still in the appeal process, so if we can get more clarity on that then we can go and bring a few more players in pre-June 30, which is a possibility.

"Obviously we won't have a hell of a lot of money, but that's something we'll be able to do in the next couple of weeks."

IS MOSES SULI THE ANSWER TO MANLY'S PROBLEMS?
The coach was asked about elevating rookies to full-time NRL contracts.

"We've got to be smart in how we do it," Barrett said.

"We've got a few kids in there, young Moses Suli who will be ready to play first grade soon, he's going really well.

"Young Manasa (Fainu) is a good player, they are on the development list, but I don't want to fill the spots in our top cap until we definitely know where we are going to need the players.

"We've got a few options there."

HOW ARE THE GROUP COPING THROUGHOUT ALL THE CONTROVERSY?
Salary cap issues, Jackson Hastings v Daly Cherry-Evans, half the playing group fined.

How were the players actually faring amidst all the drama?

"They've been really good, it's been tough on the players," Barrett said.

"Through tough times, you find out a lot about each other and the group has come together.

"I expect to see them tomorrow."

DOES BARRETT EXPECT SEA EAGLES FANS TO BOO THEIR CLUB AGAIN?
Last time Manly played at Brookvale, the fans booed their side off the field at half-time. Barrett doesn't want that to happen again.

"The players certainly need that fan's support," Barrett said.

"I understand their frustration through the last few weeks, but I can assure the fans our players are they're in it for each other and in it for the right reasons."

What garbage does not sound to convincing. The players are in it for each other REALLY the last three matches have being a DISGRACE, IF THAT IS WHAT HE CALLS TOGETHER WE ARE REALLY IN TROUBLE.

Interesting to hear the thinking behind the current top 30, promoting the young'uns and leaving space to recruit some .... and the time schedule for decisions ....

From reading the numbnuts I thought we were doing nothing ..... maybe Trent could phone all the fans individually in future ....

The problems we have are well documented now.

I would like to think that the team have focussed on the basics this week, completing sets, eliminating silly penalties, controlling the rock and have a disciplined approach, the last few games we have been our own worst enemy at times.

In relation to promoting young players, this has to be a no brainer especially if it becomes more obvious that we are not a finals team, we need to blood these kids so that we have a fresh start in 2019, no good going back to tried and trusted reserve graders, we need to move forward!

Reassuring that the coach expects to see the players on game day.
Sporting news is terrible “accidental” misquote makes our coach look like an idiot. Nrl.com posted this article. https://www.nrl.com/news/2018/04/26/manly-coach-trent-barrett-contemplating-filling-roster-holes/

Real quote seems much more believable. It’s about 2/3s the way down the page.
"It's been tough on the players but through tough times you find a lot about each other and the group has come together. I expect to see it tomorrow."

That makes more sense

Seeing as Greenturd said we were cap compliant when the penalty dropped, and we have since released Lussick, I still don't get how we don't have much. We should have at least Lussick's pro rata cap hit and change. Unless Trent is trying very badly to pre-lowball any future signing.

I wonder if it makes more sense (and also if it's even possible) to prepay next years cap penalty with Lussicks money and promote from within.

Either Baz's statement makes it sound like no troops are coming soon, more likely when the appeal is finalised.

Anyone know what Lussick was on? In my head I think it was $340K, for some reason. Too much for what he gave back, I guess - and it leaves us open to get some 'depth players' at least... But is that going to be enough? Is it worth getting rid of a club favourite in Darcy, and bringing in two players of less standing? Does that mean a prop on, say, $180K and another half on about the same? Time will tell...
