NRL club on the chopping block for second Brisbane team

Why close / relocate a club? Just send the Bears to South Brisbane and be done with it. It's not like the draw is perfect now and couldn't handle an odd number. Every club gets a bye, so what ... might even be good for player welfare. I don't think any club needs to be closed

ok - so maybe i see things a little differently..... here are my thoughts on what should happen;

1. Give the Queenslanders more teams. Hell, give them 2 teams. Let all the Queenslanders fight amongst themselves for funding and quality players. Maybe even give them their own bloody comp. I would be happy with that. Call it the QRL.

2. I still don't understand why we let NZ have a team. A whole country has one team. How many kiwis play in the NRL? Stuff it - we either get rid of them (my pref) or give them a couple more teams too.Let's go further - we create a league called the NZRL and they can play their own comp too (get some pacific nations involved.... roberts your fathers brother!)

3. Melbourne & Canberra & Newcastle. I don't really care. They are cash cows which fund us..... so whatever. They can stay purely for the revenue. I hate them all.

4. DO NOT get rid of any Sydney teams. They are the teams I enjoy beating the most. I don't want the sharks gone, or the eels, or anyone else. Hell, I miss beating the bears too.

5. Other locations. OK - now for me real opinion. The strength of Rugby League is the tribalism and the country. We really actually need teams that represent non-coastal areas where there is nothing else to do in life. Dubbo, Parkes, Bathurst, Albury, Mt Isa - give them also something to get behind. Build some small stadiums, get the kiddies invovled. Drive local trade and tourism. Let all the country folk get behind something.

as usual everyone misses the point
EVEN THOUGH they tell you directly

"“They love their rugby league in Brisbane and it seems a natural fit,” Mr Delany said. “You get that inter-city rivalry which enhances tribalism and that’s ultimately what we want.

“It’s all about generating more fans and bigger TV audiences. I don’t know if you’d get that real tribal traction with rugby league in Perth that you’d get in Brisbane.”

ENHANCES TRIBALISM = We can rig games and get away with it because the fools will turn a blind eye when their team gets the 'rub of the green'
BIGGER TV AUDIENCES = Because we will "create the entertainment" World Championship Rugby League - and rake it in on the advertising etc

But no-one mention the huge sums we will make on the GAMBLING

Current day Rugby League fans are total utter muppets.

By 2023 the influence of 9 will be next to nothing. They might not even be in a position to bid for games. Hope there is a working group investigating that.

Phil Gould put the NRL bosses in his sights and did not hold back

news.com.au Sept 2 2019

Rugby league great Phil Gould has torn shreds through the NRL bosses over their handling of expansion clubs and their lack of planning.

Rugby league great Phil Gould taken NRL bosses to task over reports one club could be shifted into Brisbane.

Cronulla, Manly and the Gold Coast are reportedly at risk of being axed from the NRL as the Nine Network pushes for a new Brisbane rugby league team.

The reports of the attempted relocation strategy didn’t sit well with Gould who ripped into the league bosses over their lack of forward planning when compared to that of the AFL.

“The first thing I’ll say is that every time this subject comes up, people comment on about 10-seconds thought about what could be possible,” Gould said on Channel 9’s 100% Footy.

“There is no one that has actually done research or gone into any market viability or looked at the financial structures of individual clubs or what it costs to run an NRL franchise.

What Phil is saying is essentially what everyone has known for years. RL is a game that has been generally run by dolts for much of its history. Dolts in suits and ties, but dolts nonetheless.

Look at this current CEO clown. Was all smooth talking (always a nice euphemism for a bullish-t artist) piss and wind as a club CEO. Nothing has changed since he ascended to the NRL role.

As for Beattie, well at least he is pushing off.

Gus is right, the Gold Coast should be a powerhouse, but it isn’t. Why? Well he accurately summed up why.

There is already a second Brisbane Team, but it's located in Melbourne 😎

Why doesn't a journo ever bother to ask why with the $4m extra per year that the Scumos get to grow the game in Victoria, they have not set up a reserve grade or juniors system down there :wait:

The Drizzle would be perfect for Brisbane, they love Lang Park and they are essentially a Queensland team. This whole debate highlights the total lack of leadership at the NRL who should be putting Nein in their place!! It is our game!! Write off a fabric club at your peril!!

As I've said before.....its because if the Storm had to get their juniors from Victoria they would rarely get out of the bottom 4, let alone challenge for the top 8 and indeed much higher like they do.

A successful NRL team in Melbourne, the very heart of the AFL, is good for business as far as the NRL are concerned. Its also a bragging rights thing. As such don't expect the NRL to stop spoon feeding them Qld juniors for a LONG time yet.

But after 22 years in the NRL it really is high time that Melbourne did have its own reserve grade and junior system in place in Victoria.

But their existence is solely to grow the game into Victoria.

They spend the NRL extra funds on being a Qld Team with a Melbourne home ground :swear:

Grow the game in Victoria....yeah right. They are a Melbourne club in name and playing base only. For all intents and purposes, they are a Queensland team, just not actually located in Queensland.

The Storm and the NRL have grown the Storm and NRL in Melbourne. They have done virtually nothing to actually grow the game in Victoria as far as participation numbers or the standard goes. Grass roots rugby league in Victoria is just a place to attract Storm fans.
