NRL club on the chopping block for second Brisbane team

Click bait everyone, and they include us because it’s trendy to hate Manly.

It’s clear to everyone that the Titans are yet another GC failure.

AND, aren’t the first.

There’s your extra Brisbane team and with very very little by way of disgruntled fans.

Sunday FS said the NRL are about to issue Permament Licences to each Franchise.

They will keep these as long as they're financially viable when the licence is withdrawn @

So fatten up people, we will all need to join Weight Watchers when Penn is short on funds :wait:

I get dirty with us and the sharks being mention.

Why would you move the teams at the extreme north and south of Sydney.

When western Sydney is saturated with
Parra
Penrith
Wests
Canterbury

Then you have
Souths
East’s
St George all very close.

I say merge one of the western Sydney teams.

Here's what doesn't make sense...In the English premier League, out of the current 20 teams the current smallest team (Bournemouth) has a capacity of just over 11,000 and the bottom 5 average to just over 21,000 (just under 24,000 if Bournemouth removed). The size of the grounds is not the problem. League is tribal and what S#@t for brains Greenberg fails to realise is that the lack of atmosphere, allowing teams like storm to ruin the spectacle and alienating fans is the problem.

Ideas to fix the problem:
Problem: Wrestling slowing the game to a snoozefest. Solution: Allow the referees discretion to get a feel for the game and 2 warning rule, on 3rd offence is a sinbin from anywhere on field (not just on goal line), just watch the game speed up, with excitement and unpredictability increase in the play as fatigue sets in. This will reduce the penalty marathon too.

Problem: Major indiscretions missed during play. Solution without slowing the game down to constant stop start is allowing a captains call once a game which allows the entire play to be reviewed, which will be used sparingly and at pivotal consequential moments.

The fairest and most exciting way for new teams to enter is through a relegation system and a 2nd tier comp. There is enough demand for a Perth team, another NZ team, Fiji, Adelaide, 2nd Brisbane team, Southern Queensland team (not titans) even give a chance to Bears to reenter via Central coast. This would add so much discussion and excitement and reengage fans that were lost and ensure that even if you were kicked out, you could earn your way back in. thoughts?

I agree...to a point. A second division here would be an abject failure due simply to the splintering of the winter sporting landscape in Australia.

Even the AFL, with its massive member base and huge crowd numbers don't have second divisions.

It's a nice idea in principle (and I actually wish it would work) but it's just not practical. The EPL is a totally different animal. There's only one winter sport in England of any consequence and teams don't get deserted by their fans when they're in the fourth tier.

The NRL sold the Titans to a private consortium two years.

The story below says the deal was $15 mil up front then $10 mil in grass roots funding.

I'm no lawyer but I'm pretty sure these people aren't going to hand over this amount on a contract that allows the seller (NRL) to tell them to pack up and move to who knows where within 5 years on a whim of the broadcasters.

Whilst the Titans are financial I'm thinking they're pretty safe.

edit: more reason we need to get our membership numbers up

The 2nd tier division definitely has logistical issues no doubt, more of a romanticised idea but removing the wrestle idea in my opinion would single handedly change the game in an unbelievable way, I mentioned before eels vs broncos game was unbelievable because of its free flowing speed, melbourne destroy any enjoyment of watching a game as an unbiased fan..

In a poll earlier this year I selected Canterbury as one of two Sydney teams who should be relocated given how they are sandwiched between Wests and Parra. I will admit that I did also select Cronulla given that St George already covers such a huge area (Kogarah to Wollongong)

Beattie insists no NRL club will be forced to relocate to Brisbane
By Sam Phillips - SMH
Updated September 1, 2019

ARL Commission chair Peter Beattie insists "no club will be forced to move" in response to suggestions a Sydney club could be in danger of being relocated to Brisbane.

Beattie released a statement on Sunday after Nine Network director of sport Tom Malone said the broadcaster's preference was for an existing club to make way for a new team in the Queensland capital by 2023, when the game's next television deal is due to begin.

NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg met with Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk on Friday to discuss the possibility of a second Brisbane team. But Beattie on Sunday insisted no club would be forced to move.

"[The] ARLC has made no decision on the future footprint of the game," Beattie said.

"[The] ARLC asked the NRL to work on a footprint strategy and report back by December 2019.

"That work involved stakeholder consultation. No club will be forced to move.

"Clubs will have a chance to voice their views on September 12."

So by FAR being the more successful club out of the 3 we should be the ones to go and having the only foothold on sydneys north aswell

Mmmm yer ok nein !!!!

The wrestle is the biggest issue. I don't want it to turn in to touch football. But right now, the man trying to play the ball is being held on to and interfered with for way to long.

The contest between defence and attack needs to be even.

Seriously ... Ch 9 only broadcast a couple of games a week ... they are a junior partner with a diminishing audience ..... someone should tell them we don't give a flying fig what they think ......

I am sure Ch7 or Ch 10 would be happy to pick up the free to air contract ..... ,

Yeah its a bit arrogant making demands before you have even entered bidding for the rights. How the hell isnt that the story anyway ?
Ch 9 did the ****er on Foxtel from memory in the last deal by going alone. I cant imagine that has been forgotten either .

All of Sydney shoudl be allocated between the existing NRL teams, and simple KPIs on juniors and supporter development in the full area of each team set. For Manly, its Northern Beaches and North Shore - that is a large base and shoudl be ours exclusivley to develop. Sorry North Sydney.

The most logical outcome would be to relocate the Storm to the WWE.. you would get rid of the wrestle from the game and the storm can keep on winning titles legitimately.
