NRL club on the chopping block for second Brisbane team

Pat Malone on his own doesn’t really come across as a rugby league fan or student of the game. If he was, he would remember what that sort of upheaval can cause.

As Bob alluded to, only one of three Queensland-based teams, a state with a population approximating Sydney’s, will figure in the finals this year. That team near the bottom of the eight.

Meanwhile the ‘crowded’ Sydney market is throwing up five finalists, with the other Sydney-based teams all figuring in calculations right up until these last few rounds. So who has been underperforming?

Are Hello! They did this in the past and it failed. So why does the NRL keep trying force failed initiatives. This has nothing to do with what is good for Rugby League but everything to do with $$$.

Todd just take your cash and died!

Have a go at this muppet. Let me see if I understand this ?

Put a line through a traditional Sydney team, alienating thousands of fans.
Start a new team in Brisbane whose fans will all be coming from the existing Donkeys fans essentially not growing the fan base at all.

Does anyone really think the GWS fans are anything but former Swans fans that live in the west ?

These idiots don't care about the game and especially couldn't care about crowds and fans. All that matters is TV audience ! And how good will that look without an ACTUAL audience you numpty ?

I know they won't cut Manly, but if the unthinkable happened and they did, I'd be done with NRL. I wouldn't simply support another team. I just couldn't. I'd become like those Newtown and Bears supporters. And I'd just go and support Sydney FC like I do in the summer and give all my membership money to them.

The stupidity of these TV execs is mind boggling.
If Manly go, I am no longer a rugby league fan...end of. Same as in the dark days of the Northern Eagles, when I simply walked away from the game. No real fan could just choose another team and carry on as though nothing had happened. I certainly couldn't.
And for the information of whoever wrote that article, Sydney doesn't HAVE "nine traditional clubs"...St George Illawarra and Wests Tigers hardly count as "traditional", having existed in their present form for less than 20 years...

Can't see this happening, who do you move or cut?

Manly and leave no team north of the harbor (plus privately owned)
Penrith has a massive junior's and attracts lots of fans to the game
Parra is similar to Penrith, plus don't think the government will be too happy about building a new stadium and having it sit empty.
Rorters don't get big crowds and have no junior's but corporate support
Souths, they tried that once and failed

Best bet is to merge channel 9 with 10 as free to air is dead and slowly dying out along with Foxtel.

What better a way for toddles to pry the Turbo,s away from their beloved club to his scumdogs than to kill off their current club that they are at. This clown has to go. Why are we the only ones that see he is killing the game

I was the same in the Northern Eagles days. Most Bears fans were lost forever and they did their best to get rid of the Souths fans too. I wonder how many St George, Steelers, Balmain and Wests fans were lost? Even fans who kept their teams got disillusioned. The Super League war and “rationalisation” set the game back decades. Why anyone would suggest kicking out a Sydney team to start a new one in Brisbane is beyond me.

Based on overlapping small areas there needs to be rationalisation between Souths and Roosters.

Tigers and Canterbury.

Cronulla and St George.

Melbourne has no juniors so they should be the first club cut.
Rorters next, for the same reason, plus no crowds and the fact that Souffs have far more support in the small south-east Sydney region.
Then one of the many clubs in Sydney's west - the Tugers, Dogs, Doesn'tmatta, 'Riff. There simply is too many clubs for the one region of Sydney.
If you are still looking for clubs to cut then it should be Cronulla, which sits between St George and Illawarra.
Manly is safe because it has no adjoining clubs - just water.
Having a television station telling a 'powerful' sporting body what to do is the tail wagging the dog. Sort of like the Bunker overriding common sense. And that would never happen, would it......

Well i be the same if we go i won't follow code
Imo given the history of this sport, i believe both our club and the district should go to rugby union. Why give them any juniors in the future.
Whats stopping scott penn aproaching super rugby for a franchise on northern beaches.

If they want to move a club to Brisbane then the most logical team to move there is Melbourne Storm. They are basically the second Brisbane team already as they have no juniors and get all of theirs from the QCup and are already playing up there under the banner of the Sunshine Coast Falcons

I have often thought this too.
