G'day all,
Just passing on a summary of questions recently put to Lyall at last week's Member Council meeting, which the club are happy be shared with members and supporters to hopefully provide some clarity on a few issues.
1. Relentlessly hammered by the NRL & in the media over the past couple of years. No doubt this has damaged our brand in the marketplace. What steps are being taken to restore our name and reputation in the overpopulated and highly competitive market that represents potential sponsors for NRL clubs?
In relation to the media, we do respond where we feel it is in our best interests. Sometimes it is not in our best interests as it may give stories that are not accurate undue coverage.
The board and management are working on the strategic plan now. Our key sponsors are extremely supportive of the club as the club are of them. We maintain a strong relationship and remain in regular contact with them.
2. Why do we take games to Brisbane & Christchurch when we are struggling for money? (I love the Brisbane one!!!! Or as I call it Brookvale North).
There are three reasons, one is financial; these games generate great revenue for our Club which assists keeping membership and ticket costs down.
Further, they help spread our brand into different markets which again assists our revenue streams through increased brand exposure and potential new membership and merchandise sales.
Finally, particularly the Brisbane match, allows us to support our Brisbane based members and supporters who live in the Queensland market.
3. Who is the recruitment officer? Are we targeting one?
Scott Fulton is currently the Under 20’s and Junior Representative Pathways recruitment manager and we are currently looking to appoint a senior NRL Recruitment/List Manager.
4. What happened into the investigation to the Brookvale Oval turf?
The investigation into Brookvale found nothing materially wrong with the turf and the playing surface is certainly up to NRL standard.
5. What are we doing about the attendance at Brookvale oval? Made suggestions of giving away signed footballs or handing out Manly banners to children as we did a few years ago.
Yes, this is a good idea, the marketing team are looking at a range of initiatives to increase attendance from ways to improve the game day experience to looking at new ways to improve the offerings to members on game day.
We are also working on the following:
· Trialling some initiatives for both members and supporters for the up coming 3 home games in July to boost attendance
· Reviewing and refreshing both our ticket pricing, package offerings and membership packages for the 2019 season which will be launched in late September 2018
There were a range of initiatives shared with the council for our opinion and suggestions in this area.
6. Can we do anything about the timing of games?
This is primarily controlled by the NRL. The club are invited to make requests in relation to preferences which we do, however the NRL and the game’s broadcast partners have the final say.
7. Could we start a Facebook group where members can communicate with the club? This could be used for special promotions or competitions. Possibly provide an opportunity to chat with players.
Any medium/channel where we can easily communicate with our members and answers their questions is an avenue worth exploring. Previously we had a membership FB page and due to lack of engagement at that time the decision was made to close the page. This was a decision we didn’t take lightly, however, we are open to reviewing how to make this page an engaging and worthwhile experience and consider relaunching.
On that note, along with recent updates to how business pages work on Facebook. We feel that it is wise to come up with the correct strategy to ensure we have success communicating with our Members in the digital space. More to come regarding FB groups.
8. We won the under 20’s last year, why haven’t these players been sighted in first grade?
The players are not yet NRL ready. There is a significant step between the NRL and under 20s. The club has a responsibility to look after the development and welfare of these players to ensure they are not burnt out early and are given every opportunity to maximise their career potential. We are looking at pathways to allow them to gain greater experience such as playing against more experienced men in the Intrust Cup to assist this development.
As you know we are trying to select Manase Fainu, and Tom Wright has been playing for us. They are ready.
9. Could the club communicate with members a response to adverse publicity?
This is covered in response to question 1; however, the Club will look at ways to enhance its communication with members. Sea Eagles news does cover a lot of matters.
10. Do we still have the funding from the Federal Government for Brookvale oval?
Yes, we still have the $12 Million from the Federal Government. The club are in ongoing discussions with various levels of government and other stakeholders to develop our traditional home ground.
11. Has anything changed in our strength & conditioning programs that are contributing to injuries?
No there have been no changes. The club do not consider the injuries suffered this year have resulted from this.
12. Is the club looking at additional support for Trent, he seems to deal with everything?
Trent has a great deal of support including a highly experienced assistant coaching and high-performance staff around him. Management and Trent meet regularly to identify ways for continued improvement at all levels of our football operation, on and off the field.
13. Is the club considering moving from Brookvale Oval?
This received an emphatic NO. Brookvale is our home.
14. Can the club consider allowing one child admission to Brookvale free with a paying adult member?
Some levels of membership already offer something like this. A detailed analysis of 2019 memberships is currently underway and our plan is to include a wider variety of offerings for families and juniors both in terms of game ticket and membership offerings going forward.
15. Are the improvements to Brookvale oval going ahead?
Work continues vigorously in this regard and while it is a long process of stakeholder engagement the Club is very committed to achieving everything it possibly can to uplift the facilities and offerings at Lottoland.
16. Why can’t we organise third party agreements like the Roosters Bronco’s etc.?
We can’t comment on other club’s arrangements and it is of course outside of the regulations for Club’s to directly underwrite or guarantee third party payments to players.
17. What is the planned direction for the club over the next 3-5 years? How do these contribute to the organisations continuity?
The Club’s strategic plan is to be the best club in the NRL both on and off the field. This is currently being worked on by all levels of the Club from the Directors to staff members. It will be shared when ready.
18. When will the club have an advice on the salary cap from the NRL?
We expect the hearing to go ahead next week.
