Members Council

If you're test marketing it doesn't have to be hush hush....

The club is literally in its worst position since the Northern Eagles and they continue to keep the fan base in the dark.

Can't say I understand it but hopefully it's all a grand plan and in control....
Agree we are at our lowest ebb since NEs-if u check out my post from last night there’s grande plan getting developed and Lyall gave a commitment it will be shared once finished

Thank goodness the important decision about hats has been finalised.

I let my membership lapse when Toovey was sacked. It was the way it was handled that peeved me more than the decision, and I haven't been to Brookie since. I would love to watch the boys again at Brookie and perhaps one day become a member again, but I have a feeling deep in my soul that the club doesn't give a continental about me (a supporter). I wish I could articulate my gut feelings into words, but I am struggling to do so.

I don't know if betrayed is the right word, perhaps abandoned is a better descriptive, bit I feel the club has turned it back on old fart supporters like myself. As a kid growing up in Auburn sitting on the hill at Lidcombe Oval in my Manly jersey, I can tell honestly say I have bled for this club. Perhaps the word I am looking for is tradition, I know things change but the Penns and the rest of the staff that work in the Eagles Nest need to get in touch with our base and remember what it is to be Manly.

Sorry for the rant.

I have a mate that feels the same way, he was a Manly man through and through, grew up around Narrabeen, played Flegg/Ball etc for the club. He grew up around the same time as Tooves, played with and is best mates with a former 1st grader.
He's lost the passion ever since Tooves got shafted and hasn't been back to Brookie since.

Did anyone manage to ask for updates on whether they will be inducting anymore life members ?? or have they closed it down after 4 ? They did say that Matt Ballin would be favourably looked upon in the future. It's been a couple of years now so he's due. It'd be a shame to see such a wonderful initiative like that to just wither on the vine, it's those sort of ideas that keep the fans engaged.
We have life memberships for former players courtesy of the MWDRLFC.

The Penn versions are the equivalent of WSC, circa 1977-79, or the Superleague competition/tests/grand final in 1997.

Not the real deal.

I spoke to Solomon Haumono today, and he said footy just isn't footy anymore, its a business.

He spoke fondly of Arko (as you would expect) and funnily enough Bozo. Not for his skill or immortality status, but because Bozo the coach let them play footy, and they in turn would win. Hint Twenty.
As a side note, he also said Cliffy was the best he ever played with. Yay.

He may not be a Manly great, but he remembers those years fondly. I certainly remember his hits though. At the height of his powers he was brilliant.

The club will inform members and fans at the right time - I know everyone is thirsty for info but as some things are not locked in or decided it is not the right time to open the floodgates- don’t forget once it is shared the media can get hold of it and fans also think it is set in stone ( then club has egg on its face if things don’t proceed).

Trust the process - as stated early in this thread it is wasn’t that long ago that us sausage roll eaters were considered irrelevant. We have actually taken a few steps forward- that is a positive!
So the was no bad news about brookvale. Sorry mate I read your post at 5am this morning and that’s how I read it lol. Hope ya well mate

Our future is tied very closely to the future of Brookie, which as every man and his dog and its fleas knows is a political football.
At some stage it will be placed in the hands of a state trust.
There'll be celebrations aplenty when that is announced*.

*Hopefully within our lifetimes, and the lifetime of the club

So MWSE are just going to abandon it after 4 players ?? Seems strange, why would you make such a big song and dance about it at the time ??

Maybe one of the Members Council members can ask Lyall what is happening with this.

Salary cap -yes that is what I meant

In Lyall listening to him along with his team I feel they are the right people for the job at hand - don’t forget he is s still putting his staff in place and the first few months of his tenure he has been putting out bush fires rather than getting on with the job.

In terms of being asked not the share certain info you will have to read between the lines of my original post but most of it relates to ideas around membership, promotions etc and how they would reasonate. We are not given any info around recruitment, club gossip, whether Hastings is staying or going etc - rest easy

G’day guys,

Just echoing these comments. This was my first dealing with Lyall and he is impressive - As mentioned he has come in and rather than get straight into getting us back on track, has had to immerse himself in the salary cap issues, which has obviously been a reasonable distraction.

He is looking to utilise some non traditional streams of income which paid dividends with the Sharks.

He reaffirmed the commitment the club has to Brookvale, there are obvious political barriers that are making the process difficult and one that will take time.

One of the main things he highlighted is the need for their communication to be better. Whilst there are situations where they will strategically not make comment, they want to be as transparent as possible with members and will look to work on this accordingly.

Again, if you have questions for Lyall, flick him an email - he seems very approachable and willing to communicate.

Just a question on the promised $10m by the NSW Government and $10m by the Federal Government to upgrade Brookie.
Who was this money promised to? The Northern Beaches Council or to the Manly Sea Eagles?
No doubt it was the Council. So, as a rate payer, I should be told why they aren't utilising this money?
$10m will not cover a new grandstand but it will spruce up the facilities and keep the ground in good shape for a few more seasons.

Did he speak about the Pleasure Machine at all?

It appears the money is available to the club as $12m from Feds is being accessed for consultancy support - and use is dependent on 3.5k under cover seating being provided. $10m from state is for a center of excellence. You can’t build either for that.

Mitch talked about politics- time will tell if the story comes out but suffice to say we are very very unlucky not to be talking about a significantly bigger investment in here this week.

G'day all,

Just passing on a summary of questions recently put to Lyall at last week's Member Council meeting, which the club are happy be shared with members and supporters to hopefully provide some clarity on a few issues.

1. Relentlessly hammered by the NRL & in the media over the past couple of years. No doubt this has damaged our brand in the marketplace. What steps are being taken to restore our name and reputation in the overpopulated and highly competitive market that represents potential sponsors for NRL clubs?

In relation to the media, we do respond where we feel it is in our best interests. Sometimes it is not in our best interests as it may give stories that are not accurate undue coverage.

The board and management are working on the strategic plan now. Our key sponsors are extremely supportive of the club as the club are of them. We maintain a strong relationship and remain in regular contact with them.

2. Why do we take games to Brisbane & Christchurch when we are struggling for money? (I love the Brisbane one!!!! Or as I call it Brookvale North).

There are three reasons, one is financial; these games generate great revenue for our Club which assists keeping membership and ticket costs down.

Further, they help spread our brand into different markets which again assists our revenue streams through increased brand exposure and potential new membership and merchandise sales.

Finally, particularly the Brisbane match, allows us to support our Brisbane based members and supporters who live in the Queensland market.

3. Who is the recruitment officer? Are we targeting one?

Scott Fulton is currently the Under 20’s and Junior Representative Pathways recruitment manager and we are currently looking to appoint a senior NRL Recruitment/List Manager.

4. What happened into the investigation to the Brookvale Oval turf?

The investigation into Brookvale found nothing materially wrong with the turf and the playing surface is certainly up to NRL standard.

5. What are we doing about the attendance at Brookvale oval? Made suggestions of giving away signed footballs or handing out Manly banners to children as we did a few years ago.

Yes, this is a good idea, the marketing team are looking at a range of initiatives to increase attendance from ways to improve the game day experience to looking at new ways to improve the offerings to members on game day.

We are also working on the following:

· Trialling some initiatives for both members and supporters for the up coming 3 home games in July to boost attendance

· Reviewing and refreshing both our ticket pricing, package offerings and membership packages for the 2019 season which will be launched in late September 2018

There were a range of initiatives shared with the council for our opinion and suggestions in this area.

6. Can we do anything about the timing of games?

This is primarily controlled by the NRL. The club are invited to make requests in relation to preferences which we do, however the NRL and the game’s broadcast partners have the final say.

7. Could we start a Facebook group where members can communicate with the club? This could be used for special promotions or competitions. Possibly provide an opportunity to chat with players.

Any medium/channel where we can easily communicate with our members and answers their questions is an avenue worth exploring. Previously we had a membership FB page and due to lack of engagement at that time the decision was made to close the page. This was a decision we didn’t take lightly, however, we are open to reviewing how to make this page an engaging and worthwhile experience and consider relaunching.

On that note, along with recent updates to how business pages work on Facebook. We feel that it is wise to come up with the correct strategy to ensure we have success communicating with our Members in the digital space. More to come regarding FB groups.

8. We won the under 20’s last year, why haven’t these players been sighted in first grade?

The players are not yet NRL ready. There is a significant step between the NRL and under 20s. The club has a responsibility to look after the development and welfare of these players to ensure they are not burnt out early and are given every opportunity to maximise their career potential. We are looking at pathways to allow them to gain greater experience such as playing against more experienced men in the Intrust Cup to assist this development.

As you know we are trying to select Manase Fainu, and Tom Wright has been playing for us. They are ready.

9. Could the club communicate with members a response to adverse publicity?

This is covered in response to question 1; however, the Club will look at ways to enhance its communication with members. Sea Eagles news does cover a lot of matters.

10. Do we still have the funding from the Federal Government for Brookvale oval?

Yes, we still have the $12 Million from the Federal Government. The club are in ongoing discussions with various levels of government and other stakeholders to develop our traditional home ground.

11. Has anything changed in our strength & conditioning programs that are contributing to injuries?

No there have been no changes. The club do not consider the injuries suffered this year have resulted from this.

12. Is the club looking at additional support for Trent, he seems to deal with everything?

Trent has a great deal of support including a highly experienced assistant coaching and high-performance staff around him. Management and Trent meet regularly to identify ways for continued improvement at all levels of our football operation, on and off the field.

13. Is the club considering moving from Brookvale Oval?

This received an emphatic NO. Brookvale is our home.

14. Can the club consider allowing one child admission to Brookvale free with a paying adult member?

Some levels of membership already offer something like this. A detailed analysis of 2019 memberships is currently underway and our plan is to include a wider variety of offerings for families and juniors both in terms of game ticket and membership offerings going forward.

15. Are the improvements to Brookvale oval going ahead?

Work continues vigorously in this regard and while it is a long process of stakeholder engagement the Club is very committed to achieving everything it possibly can to uplift the facilities and offerings at Lottoland.

16. Why can’t we organise third party agreements like the Roosters Bronco’s etc.?

We can’t comment on other club’s arrangements and it is of course outside of the regulations for Club’s to directly underwrite or guarantee third party payments to players.

17. What is the planned direction for the club over the next 3-5 years? How do these contribute to the organisations continuity?

The Club’s strategic plan is to be the best club in the NRL both on and off the field. This is currently being worked on by all levels of the Club from the Directors to staff members. It will be shared when ready.

18. When will the club have an advice on the salary cap from the NRL?

We expect the hearing to go ahead next week.

Also on a side note the club would are each year asked to put forward 3 key home games to the NRL that would take priority in scheduling (Against our perceived most notable rivals/strong drawing supporter groups etc).

With that in mind, who would be the three teams you would see as being the most significant and needing high profile matches at Brookvale?

Thanks Mr Mitch, love your work.

Any word on the next meeting being held in Canada? *cough*

They can hold it in my holiday house if they want.*
