Game Day: Manly v Bulldogs [Round 4, 2017]

I think Baz chooses Brown for his versatility in the utilty role, as he can cover back row, hooker and center in case of injury. No other player in the team can do that. Last year he played every game and numerous positions because we had so many injuries. Its purely an insurance play

Hastings would also have to be pretty close to being able to cover those positions too no? they are about the same size ... Hastings is taller

Exactly, it is pretty easy to see why he is picked in the team. And the facts are at this stage no one else in the squad is that versatile or demanding to be picked. Brown cops alot of unfair criticism here in my opinion.

In saying that, hastings can cover half back, 5/8 hooker and full back. Can shuffle Tom to center and hastings to full back if a centre goes down. Lane or Weinterstein could possibly also play in centers in case of injury.
Agreed. Personally, I don't think the utility needs to cover the forwards, we have three other forwards on the bench to do that. It's primarily as hooker, with halves and backline coverage. Hastings would be my pick.

When Baz chose brown we had Buhrer.

When Baz chose brown we had Buhrer.

I think the case with Buhrer was his contract was up, but with Brown, he was still on the books for 2 more years! If we tried to move Brown on, we needed to find a club to take him or pay out his contract. We did a deal with Newcastle to get Uate cheap and he has been great so far. We also wanted a ball playing forward, so picked up Siro cheap (as it was just stated in the paper yesterday - tigers are still paying a fair chunk of his salary for this year!)

We should be in a good position to recruit well this year for 2018 - hopefully we perform well - as it will help attract the better players

Our Twitter guy Wayne, is talking up "the Fortress". Does he know we've played there 12 times in the last season and a bit under Trent Barrett, and we've lost NINE of those?

In fact, we are looking to avoid our 5th straight loss at Home - the worst run ever.

Yet another record this team is on the verge of breaking.

I dont considerate as an insurance for us having Brown play in our back line but a liability . In the back row and hooker he goes through the motions and does not make the impact that most bench player do .
I would rather have a player come on with an X factor in his game like Hasting who can cover fullback , centre , 5/8, 7 , and hooker . We have other 3 bench forwards who can cover in the second row and do more damage than Brown . Browns quality playing days are behind him . Brown needs Viagra to get him going these days and if Baz gives him a doze before the game our club will get fined so lets give the eager and talented young up and coming blokes with a "Hard On" a go !!!

I'm trying to 'keep the faith' with Barrett. I've backed him when he's been lambasted by many on here & I'm still backing him, however even I'm getting tired of this 'love' he has for Lewis Brown. I have nothing against Lewis Brown but if there aren't better options available to us for a bench utility then we're up s&%t creek without a paddle! I also feel we will lose Jackson Hastings if he's not given a real opportunity to play 1st Grade & I wouldn't blame him......I will then join the chorus in the 'get rid of Barrett' campaign coz the constant selection of Lewis Brown is starting to really piss me off! If he's better value on the bench than Hastings or Lane then I give up.....especially against the Dogs this weekend! What I saw from both of these guys last weekend was enough to convince me they need to be in the team somewhere....especially Lane! Surely Lane has more tackle busting ability than Brown............

Spot on madax!!

I thought i watched the games pretty closely but have to admit i have never noticed that. Must be awkward in the scrums.

Explains why no one wants to tackle around the legs any more, you could lose an eye.

Not sure realises that Brookvale is not an away game now days and still thinks it is a place where he could never win as a player

Law of averages suggest that if we have lost 9 out of 12 then we should WIN the next 9 out of 12
