I’m comfortable with the policy but there should be a limitation on how long someone sits out before they’re actually proven guilty given the snail’s pace of the legal system

Surely the snail's pace at which our justice system works is provoking discussions at NRL headquarters about the so-called 'No Fault Stand Down' rule. It is too big a punishment to ban a player for three seasons (in the case of de Belin) before their guilt or innocence is determined.
My compromise is to stand them down for four matches once they have been charged with a serious offence, then allow them to resume their RL careers. The finding of the court would them determine the future action, or not, of the NRL.

There won’t be a change unless and until it happens to a Roosters player (one they want to keep, not one they want to get rid off - if it’s one they want to get rid of they’ll get a cap exemption).

Nothing to do with dropping the case, that won't happen. Pre-trial callover mentions are simply standard case management, the purpose is so the judge can make sure the parties are thoroughly prepared, in order to avoid delays when the trial finally begins.

Just hope that delay is not another year owing to Covid backlog

Not guilty yes, but his antics that were identified as being true (but not criminal) as part of the case justify his mud-name.

Curtis Scott is another NRL player wrongly arrested and charged by Police. It's not that uncommon.
Another problem with the 'No-fault stand-down' police is the arbitrary nature of the crimes that qualify for a stand-down. The NRL fixed on Eleven years for convenience, but are there no serious crimes with a potential maximum sentence of 10 years?
For example: It is legal to bet of football matches, but what if a current NRL player was accused of taking bribes? Would he be stood down, even if there is nothing criminal in his actions, just immoral in the eyes of sports fans?

And to think the brains trust at our club chose this guy over Api. They let a special player go in Api he has the kind of infectious energy that gutho, paps, Murray, Mahoney and the like have, they are the type of players you can build success around, high energy 80 min players, and a pretty bloody decent 9 to boot, (now we don’t have one) and here’s a critical point, we couldn’t get 80 out of Api, even though the panthers can rest him for 10 at times, or when the game is sealed, he is easily an 80 min player now, highlights how our system is not up to speed, our conditioning is so far off the money, I think our level of professionalism across the club is a long way of the money, we need to improve every aspect of our club, harsh but true. what about this question, who would you like in our 9 now if you could chose between the 2? What a dumb question, what a dumb decision to let Api go.

oh well since that ships sailed I would like to see us improve with what we have and I can’t see how running DCE at 9 for a while, either starting there or rotating for periods during a game shouldn‘t be tried given where we’re at. Yes I know it won’t happen, how stupid, let’s just keep rolling with the same dumb **** we are, because of course that’s smarter, the results prove it, right? Wrong.

I don't agree with this policy. Never have.

Not that I am condoning any of the acts with which any of these guys have been charged. My problem is that this circumvents the legal process and assumes guilt rather than innocence.

The personal impact on their lives is disproportionate for unproven charges. It's not like if they're proven guilty they won't pay a heavy price. But that is the job of a legal system; not the governing body of a sport.

I can accept a period of suspension for tarnishing the reputation of the NRL, but you could easily argue that ship has pretty much sailed. Regardless, by the time the legal process plays out, the player has been out of the game for years. What sort of genius came up with this idea ? Oh yeah, Greensnot. Nuff said.

If de Belin is proven innocent, the NRL should be subject to legal action. They just torpedoed the guy's career in a knee jerk reaction. If he's guilty, he can tell his story from jail.

I agree that it is too narrow in that regard and would probably benefit from a 'detrimental to the image of the NRL' or similar approach...

something like Horse Racing does - they dont f*ck around, the stewards will just fine you or pull your licence altogether if you tarnish the sports image...

Fainu was outplaying API every week.
He was the main reason we made our run in 2019 as without Tom he was the only spark. He totally revitalised our attack that year. Api had three years where we had one ok year with green at 5/8 and two shockers( 13th and 15th), the main reason being our red zone attack was totally disjointed. Api suits the Penrith side because they have playmakers and strike everywhere and he can relax and do his tackling and individual thing. At Manly more a lot more was required of him and other than great defence he was not really creating like Fainu. We rarely scored a point when he was on the field.

Hindsight is a great thing. Sure it would have been great to keep both but the club had to choose and they chose the player who was in better form and the most upside. The club has made plenty of bad moves but this wasnt one of them.

Api started the matches and was good at the tough plays but our attack always improved once Fainu came on pitch.
Api is going well there but don't forget so many people were critical of his plays, especially his lack of crisp passing and bad pass selections and most supporters were happy with the decision to keep Fainu instead of Api.
Also Fainu was the younger guy and looked to have more potential.
I really hate how the club is being run but I agree with Susan that it was the right call at the time.
How was the club supposed to know what would happen in the off season?

Agree. But every club need 2-4 specialist hookers in their top 30. Fainu was not signed on huge $. Api should have been re-signed (the money for Croker and Levi alone would have almost covered Api)

No-one is proved innocent in a case like this. The prosecution can successfully prove their case beyond reasonable doubt, or fail to prove it beyond reasonable doubt. Any reasonable doubt, and the jury must find you not guilty. That is not the same as being ‘proven innocent’.

Well reading Ryan’s post and mulling over Manse’s character and off field antics, should have raised questions, if you want to build a club with those sort of people, you will no doubt end up with problems, would Melbourne sign him? smith Aside (cam) and they were in need of a 9? I doubt it. They didn’t tolerate Curtis Scott‘s trash either, they let him go and Pete W has it right in his post above, 9 is so important you can’t just have one, you need backup, which is obvious to all (well almost all) we had an awesome one in API and you may say he is better suited to the panthers style of play, 2019 is history and letting api go, yes in hindsight has failed, but I was shattered at the time and still hate thinking about it, still believe it was a bad call and while Manase was playing well in 2019, he was still to prove his worth long term and it would have been far wiser to keep api on until that was well established. Anyway I guess it’s another case of the proof is in the pudding and finally was api to blame for his form and fitness at our club or was it more a symptom our system? He is so much fitter than I ever saw him in our colours, playing greater mins and feeding the black cats huge amounts of energy, the type of energy RM brings to Parra, I‘m not convinced Manase has it or that our club can achieve that type of game speed and consistency with him, it is also to be seen if he can come back and pick up where he left off. I’m not writing him off or putting him down, I hope he comes back and kills it, I also hope someone can get in his head and straighten him up, life dishes up some hard lesson at times, some learn, some don’t, hope he is one of the earlier kind, time will tell, if hasn‘t already thrown it all away.
