Beware of Penns Legal Eagles .
They will eye out all the loopholes on Trents contract and pick them out like worms to the slaughter .

Then I hope to whatever Diety you choose that they are a different team of Lawyers that advised him to pay them a fortune for 12 months to fight the salary cap witchhunt only to get his arrse handed to him .....

No one knows what goes on behind lawyers closed doors

Agree
Although , to be fair, it is the opinion of non Manly fans that count (for his next role etc) so we might not be the best judges
No I’m pretty sure Manly fans are always the best judges for all things footy! (With a couple of exceptions that prove the rule, of course)

Yes, I've learnt that Penn doesn't know how to run a club, or read a contract, otherwise Trent would have been looooong gone.

What's caught everyone out (Penn especially) is that it's the first time since forever a coach has resigned instead of being sacked. There's the issue right there.

And like I said I hated Barrett's coaching, and could not be happier Des is back (well prefer Toovs but let's not debate that) but when coaches resign you either A: let them work out their resignation period as coach, or B: you pay them out. Anything mid ground is a massive legal fight which is, SURPRISE, exactly what's going on. If Barrett's lawyers have repeatedly and publicly stated his contract says he must be head coach ie can't be demoted would they just make up that or lie for the hell of it? Clearly the club were trying to bully Barrett to just slide away in the scary shadow of Des but he's standing his legal ground. Nothing wrong about that! Pay him out and move on.

Firstly, I am no fan of Barrett's coaching, I'm sure he's a nice guy but he was hugely inexperienced, and notwithstanding a terrible run of injuries and a weak squad, he still lacked the killer instinct and fear factor we needed (a la Hasler) to stop results like the Penrith and Gold Coast horrible Brookie capitulations.

But let's look at the Barrett contract issue in clear light.

1. Barrett's an employee with a contract stating he is head coach, and can only be head coach, with a resignation notice period of 12 months. RESULT: No problem there you'd think, as coaches don't usually ever resign of their own free will.

2. Barrett resigns in July 2018 giving his contractually agreed 12 months notice period to expire in July 2019. RESULT: Big problem, suddenly we don't have a coach beyond July 2019 and clearly the club needs a coach for the whole season, preferably starting Mon Nov 5.

3. Penn signs Hasler to start Mon Nov 5. RESULT: Big problem, now the club has TWO head coaches, and the outgoing one Barrett won't leave without a full payout, as if his legally contract right.

4. Penn realises his error in having two head coaches so declares Barrett can stay paid until July but in another capacity. RESULT: Big problem, Barrett's contract clearly states he can ONLY be head coach and not demoted to a lesser role.

6. Barrett makes it clear he must be head coach, or happily be fully paid out as per his contract. RESULT: Penn continues to refuse the payout, so we STILL have two head coaches.

7. Hasler turns up to work on Mon Nov 5, clearly expecting Penn to have resolved the matter so he can coach the team without the media turning up to see Hasler and Barrett opening their car doors in front of each other in the carpark. RESULT: Penn still hasn't settled the payout.

Need I continue?

Like it or not Penn agreed to a contract where Barrett was fully entitled to a 12 month resignation period AS HEAD COACH or as it standard employment practice he gets fully paid out to leave early.

Penn rightfully states as an employer he needed to protect his business by employing Hasler, but that's got nothing to do with the fact he also has a contract to honour with Barrett.

And why did Penn agree to a 12 month resignation clause in the first place? Probably because coaches never resign, they get fired and paid out, at a time frame that suits the club. Therefore the July problem was seemingly not something that anyone imaged would happen.

Until that is, Barrett thought he had the Penrith gig so resigned in July only to be sold the dump from Gus/Beavis and didn't get it after all.

The solution? Surely Penn needs to pay Barrett out in full, RIGHT NOW, just like other clubs do.

If Jake and Tom can see that's as clear as day, why can't anyone else?

Meanwhile Des needs a clear media free space to coach the team back to greatness, not a media circus.
Barrett can eat a dick ..... **** him. He can stay home and garden or sit in one of the demountable he complains about until July and look at himself in the mirror, do crosswords or watch porn for all I care. He resigned, he was not fired and he should not be paid out. He should stay and "earn it". The club is within its rights to reassign him to other duties.

Brent Read reporting on Twitter that Baz will stay away from the club until a deal has been reached.

"Manly have reached an agreement of sorts with Trent Barrett. They will continue to pay him to stay away from Narrabeen pending a settlement."
Fox are running the story now too - https://www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/nr...t/news-story/052513a7f47de55a56c2267c41635892

Sounds like the settlement is Baz being on gardening leave until his notice period expires. All in all, I think this is a sensible outcome and hopefully the matter is done.

As a club, we now need to allow him to get those payments until he is contractually obliged, but also allow him to attain additional work.

We need to take the high ground / road here.

I have no qualms with him getting a job at The Panthers or anything. He'll be a good coach, too.

Don't put a restriction of trade on the man. Let him live his life, wish him well, and thank him for his energy, effort and passion for the role while here. I also hope our club has learned quite a few lessons out of this.

If anything, at least you can all give him that. We won't have to go through a debacle like this again in our lifetimes, so thank you Trent.

Maybe it was his stance that implored The Penn's to hire all these additional staff / upgrade the facilities? Next, Centre of Excellence.

We'll have better facilities than The Roosters. And trust me, they are ORDINARY.

I appreciate what you did, and thought you were better than most say.

And I hope it's stops Baz from ever finding work as a head coach in the NRL again.

Destined for u11s touch footy. Bye bye Baz you peanut.
I am a bit more pragmatic about the situation - I see both sides of the coin but definitely think Baz has not covered himself in glory. But If he is able to swing a first grade head coach gig in the future, good luck to him (I doubt he will though). In fact, I’d be happy for him to be first grade coach of another club because, like many others, I would not fear a team coached by him!

In the end, I am just glad that the club hasn’t paid him out only for him to land at another club for the 2019 season. What he does after that, I don’t really mind.

More likely it was a condition of Des signing on but unlike Baz who was promised the additional staff, Des has an entourage that he can call on at a moment’s notice. The club had to advertise for positions to assist Baz, unfortunately.

That’s a very good point!

If Baz was so upset with how Manly was treating him with a lack of resources and facilities, enough to put in notice to resign, why is he still there.

Can't be too bad.

Nothing but a penny pinching exercise... that he knows would be having an effect on the playing group. Quitting mid year is most likely his attempt to derail the club.

Lost a lot of respect for him during this whole mid year resignation period, not to mention his public acts of sulking to Gould and Rothslime.

I wish I shared your view but I think the blokes a stain on previous coaches who have bled for the maroon and white.

I'm glad he's gone .... Almost.
Don’t get me wrong, I understand your view and I was there a few weeks ago (perhaps not completely there, but still). This whole fiasco has been terrible for us fans to have to read about week after week. But I sit back now and am stoked we have Des and his crew back (I’ve been loving the videos on the website) so I’ve let go of the past and focusing on the future.

Employee of the year

IMO Trent did not fix our attack . Our attack only consisted of individual brilliance rather than super team play .
I will give Trent credit for this though ..........
Trent has always been a lover and he taught our players how to love .

What extra staff has Des actually got :think:

Baz -> Des
Ferris -> Donny
Lambkin -> Matty
S Fulton -> Crusher
Holmes -> Bonasera

Monas is in a newly NRL created Pathways post

So far the footy ops roster just had a personnel swap :nerd:

We are also (finally) short of a Media Liason Officer post now that ZtC retired:handok:

Not sure if recruiting him was the worst decision or if punting Toovey was even worse
Both decisions as bad as each other
A bit like u were inches away from scoring a try and then u dropped it and the other side got the ball and scored ,its like a 12 point turn around and all u can think is WTF just happened
At least now we can close that sad chapter in our history and stop out flirtation with mediocrity and concentrate on truth justice and the Manly way!!
Go Manly
