The problem as I see it is that the bunker is only supposed to be there to make calls on tries or no tries. The incident with Parker where the ball never even got to the in-goal was a call that should have been left to the refs and touch judge. If the refs missed it and the ball never even got to the in-goal area before it was cleaned up by the defence, play on. And then it was made worse by the refusal to give us the same courtesy on the last play of the game when Garrick was clearly run off the ball by a player with no intent on going for the ball.
What next, calling no try for an incident on halfway just to check for something they might have missed?
The NRL really does need to clean this area up because players, coaches and fans alike are getting frustrated about the picking and choosing of when the bunker gets involved. Either the bunker can be called on to make a judgement anywhere on the field (which the broadcasters will then whinge and moan about due to the amount of stoppages "ruining their spectacle".....I can just hear Gould complaining now), or they are only there to make calls on tries, and by that I mean whether or not the ball has been grounded and what led to that point.
Incidents like last nights with the Parker trip and the last play of the game are why the NRL needs to introduce a captains call. A captains call might well have still seen Parker penalised because intentional or not there was the hint of a trip. But it definitely would have seen Aitken penalised right at the end.
Perhaps we should allow say 2 captain calls. If call made & is upheld then 2 calls still remain. 2 call quota only reduces if captains call "proved" wrongDoes everyone asking for the Captains Call really think that DCE would have saved this option until the last play of the game?
Surely it would have been used earlier in the match for any amount of other contentious calls.

Mate, you should check out some teams AFL pages after a loss. Just about every single time the only reason a team there loses, even if they get absolutely thrashed, is because of bad umpiring lol
So ... after using up your captains calls ... you end up losing the game at the end ... because of a clanger, and you have no captains calls left ....
Are you going to say ... oh well , that's the way it goes ... or are you going to blow up delux .....
Obv you blow up delux.
geeeez Unkie Woodise, get it together!!!
Agree ... so unless you get unlimited captains calls ... nothing has changed ....
It’s a great idea. Video involvement only when captains think it’s a howler.Same system as cricket.
Tried it in a whole season of Toyota cup and worked well. Never heard of again.
Pretty sure it was tried in a dead rubber game involving Newcastle late in an NRL season as well. I remember Browny saying it was great with free flowing football and plenty of tries. Said he never received a follow up call.Refs have to make a call , games flow and the howlers like last night don’t happen.
Typical NRL.

Also imagine the cr@p DCE would cop on here, in the press and generally through the whole league if god forbid he got it wrong. Give them another reason to knock him.
I think the idea has merit but the whole bunker / review system does. Maybe a coach call rather than captains ? just saying
You are dead right. Could happen for sure. The problem is that even with their review technology, the video refs are just as capable of a terrible decision.
Remember Guerra's try in the Newcastle game? The video ref somehow found a try out of a double movement... which still ended up on Fainu's boot short of the line. This was despite being sent up as 'no try' by the on-field referee.
This sort of incident would happen with or without a challenge system, which makes you wonder how blatant it would have to be to overturn a decision.
Don't watch many non Manly games but definitely does seem to be a problem and inconsistency with the selectivity of the video ref "s intervention tendencies . Really should not matter if it is the ist or last play of the game, if there seems to be a definite or contentious issue ,should be an automatic intervention by the video ref and also in particular if the on field officials are in any doubt on an apparent infringement .Pretty sure that the video ref last night was Ben. Lowe , the ex ist grade Souths player some years ago , surely an ex i st grade player would have some definite appreciation of the significance of last night"s crucial last play incident and be inclined to intervene with a review in a less pressured environment . .
