Jamal Fogarty

I see a lot of potential upside of this whole situation…

Here’s some R3 thoughts:

Daly had many halves partners throughout his Manly Career (not a eulogy)
During this stretch we’ve noticed many coaches, team mates and panel experts describe DCE as an impulsive, ‘eyes-up’ instinctual halfback.

Jamal has a similar toughness and stable general play which is more similar to the now thriving Jaime Humphreys at South’s.
This ‘Blake green- distributor’ halfback style might compliment Brooks’ running game and allow Turbo, Lehi, Ola and even Burbo to form a decent habit of support play both sides of Fogarty.

The chances of Onitoni Large and Joey Walsh to learn from a more structured general for a couples of years might help balance the instinctive playmaker style that DCE has delivered for so long.

Jamal would miss the odd game and give both Large and Walsh various opportunities over the next 2 years to taste some FG experiences with Fogarty, and at times on his behalf.

Since he’s already behind Ethan Sanders next year at urge raiders, he’s more likely comfortable with the chance that his second season with Manly may be more of a mentor role of Walsh or Large take his spot like Sanders would back in Canberra.

He could be the perfect stop gap, mentor, director and I’m personally curious to see how Manly’s speedy backline could fire with a really structured 7.
We didn’t look too bad against the bunnies last year, plus Brooks is always going to be the bridesmaid. We don’t like him running the show and neither does he..

One big positive with Jamal is he is a good human. Quiet respectful bloke and a total professional in every regard with respect to fitness and preparation, as DCE was.
He was at the Burleigh Bears when i was with the club and he totally changed the club dynamic when he arrived. He was perfect in our 2019 flogging of the dolphins in the GF, including a 90 metre solo try. He has deceptive spreed.

Despite his quiet demeanour off the field he is a huge talker on the field, something we have lacked in tight situations / big games for a long time.

As a one , maximum two year option we could do a lot worse although i would have no problem at all if we risked Tom or a rookie if they thought he may be ready.

The one option i couldn't be on board with is Arthur. He is simply not a first grader .

I would take Fogarty in a heartbeat , Good player, kicks goals , solid defence and decent kicking game. Hopefully would be under $1M as well

Great post. I can't help thinking he could be a great fit for Manly. There's much to like about Fogarty. I like his kicking game, passing and calm demeanour. Also his defence is top class.

He can’t be that quick. He got run down by Josh Papalii.

It’s interesting because 5th tackle options and a controlled kicking game are usually the last thing the young and inexperienced halves can get right. They’re usually good at some of the highlight reel stuff but where they end up falling short is the critical decision making. I concede that Fogerty would solve this issue. My worry is how many points we’ll score without Daly’s creativity and ball playing.
Does DCE have great ball playing? I feel he is a bit of a flat track bully. He's unbelievable when we are on top, but when we are in a grind I'm not sure he has that great ball playing. He's an awesome runner and great support and has no problem at all with retreating defence. Does his ball playing stand up against a solid defensive unit? One could argue that it doesn't. Even in Origin he really just plays as a distributor or runner. He doesn't really ball play or run Shape like the other best halves we have seen in recent memory.

He's rocks and diamonds even when we are on top. How many times have we blown out to a huge lead only for DCE to start playing like a headless chook, in the process letting the other side back into it?

I think he does. I concede he plays more as a distributor in Origin, due to what I see as a more conservative and controlled version of his game. Yet, he still won them an Origin series with a clever short ball to Nanai for the decisive try.

At club level, I think he has arguably the best 'creative' passing game in the NRL. I also wouldn't call him a runner of the ball...anymore. Early in his career, it was his strength and he seemed to go away from it. Now he tends to run as a last resort and almost appears afraid to be in contact. If he does get caught and has to run, he will not push through the line, instead he almost concedes a voluntary tackle.

You can trawl YouTube and find a veritable gold mine of highlights with some of the best cutout passes you'll ever see on a football field. I'll never forget one he threw to Dylan Walker at Shark Park in 2017...there's so many for Saab it gets boring. There's the inside pass to Turbo that worked a treat against the Dogs (looks simple but hard to execute). He threw a cracker of a pass for Olakau'atu in Rd.1 this year against the Cowboys and really, he's executed that similar plays on the right edge like that for the last 5-6 years. Even last week against the Raiders, he threw a bullet spiral for Garrick, albeit not for a try, but it was the most gorgeous spiral. Have a bit of a look over this video of 2022 if you have time; it was a rough year with few highlights but some of his work in this clip is exceptional. It features my 'try of the year' involving Foran, DCE, and an off-the-hip no look pass to Saab.

Under $1M?

He is on $600K at Raiders - i'd be hoping to get him for $500K tops.
