FORMER premiership-winning coach Michael Maguire has rejected a multimillion-dollar offer to coach the Manly Sea Eagles as Trent Barrett’s replacement.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal Maguire informed the Sea Eagles owner and chairman Scott Penn of his decision on Thursday before leaving to prepare the Kiwi Test side for the Test match against the Kangaroos on Saturday week in Auckland.

They had been in talks for several weeks.

“I have informed them (Penn) that I’ve declined the opportunity to coach the Sea Eagles,” Maguire told The Daily Telegraph, “I’d prefer not to go into the reasons why.

“I haven’t spoken to anyone else.

“I’ve got a big challenge with the Kiwis and that’s where my focus is right now.”

It now leaves the highly regarded coach in pole position to take on the head coaching role at either the Wests Tigers or the Brisbane Broncos.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal the poor training facilities at Manly, which led to Barrett handing in his resignation, were a contributing factor in Maguire rejecting their three-year offer.

Barrett was forced to bring in his own outdoor furniture to use at Sea Eagles HQ.

Since being dumped by the Rabbitohs and replaced by Dally M coach-of-the-year Anthony Seibold, Maguire has been working for the NRL in a senior advisory role in the refereeing department.

His decision to reject the Sea Eagles now throws the door open for former Gold Coast Titans coach John Cartwright to take over from his great mate Barrett at Brookvale next year.

The situation has become farcical on the northern beaches with the Sea Eagles still to finalise a departure plan for Barrett who has handed in his resignation but legally must remain until July 2019 because of a clause in his contract.

Manly players — and fans — are becoming extremely frustrated by the situation.

The players return to training for the 2019 season in three weeks not knowing if Barrett will still be there or if another coach will be in charge.

The club has had three months since Barrett informed the board of his intentions to find a new coach.

While their premiership rivals are well down the track in recruitment planning, Manly is still cleaning up its salary cap mess and has no-one to determine which players should be released or signed.
Well crap eh. If we cant get a proven top coach than we need a manly man to come in. Cough des or tooves.

Clear to penrith now official. Just working out how immediate it is due to sourcing a replacement.

The real truth is Manly wouldn’t / couldn’t accommodate what Maguire asked for, two key sticking points were
- full autonomy
- appointment of all his own staff, including additional people over and above the number on staff at present

I beleive this is 100% true !!! I can't belive these owners wouldn't just give him what he wanted !! They must want to get the spoon next year !! It's a f***en absolute joke

If this is the case then it's time for Penn & some of us fans to let the water flow under that bridge and send an SOS to Des or Tooves.... can't stomach Cartwright!

1000% correct. I said this months ago via my source who is mates with Maguire and I got ridiculed by all the know all’s and experts on this forum. His decision has nothing to with facilities etc. he wanted his own coaching team and as I stated ‘on his terms’...
This is all about Penn and his decisions alone.

For fook sake. You don't see any other club tripping at the last hurdle time after time like us.
PENNS! If you can't provide what a decent coach needs to coach a NRL team, we are going to crumble as this years gate takings has has implied. No one will come watch us have an other crap season. Each year this goes on, the closer we are to shutting up shop. How do u expect any profitable results if you won't give a coach what WE need!
As fans its let down after let down, kinda soul destroying really. Watching the operation of our club on a shoe string budget is like Chinese water torture (to the fans).
It's way past embarrassing now. More like a ongoing joke. You can't rebuild when the issue is at the top. I would be happy if you leave your blue print to the Centre Of whatever in your desk and invest on the on field performance. The Hill will be packed again and sponsors will be lining up.
Sugar coating the real issues with shiny seating still doesn't win us any rings.

I'm starting to become numb to any news that comes out about us.

Toovey must have really pissed the Penns off. The cupboard is bare, and the great man offers to come back.......silence!
My contact said Maguire was in the bag, but the domino effect of Cleary going back to Penrith torpedoed that.
Swallow your pride Penns, and get Des and or Tooves back on board
I agree.
As members, we all saw yesterdays carry on as nothing more than 'piss and wind'
Now Madge has told you management that you can all shove it
It is now up to you to get down on your hands and knees and suck Des and Tooves right off in order to protect your statement about employing 'Proven Performers'
Manly supporters can now only hope that you are now the 'proven performers' and have set KPI's on your outcomes

Slothfield and his f#cking chairs. He is a wanker

Just to clarify, he brought in his full outdoor furniture kit.

I forgot to suggest the ultimate solution to the above post.
Both Scott and Lyall will need to 'swallow their pride' in order to put the club first and get the required outcome to put us on a trajectory towards a premiership, and not a bloody spoon!

The clubs a basket case and If we go into next year with Cartwright as coach when you have a 2 time premiership winning coach like Hasler not employed you can bet membership numbers will decline even further in 2019. At the moment there is nothing to be excited about regarding next year and if we stay on this trajectory 16th spot is looking even more possible. Anyways I've been totally off Nrl and the club so in the end if this is how the Penns want to run this great club I'm out. I will always support Manly but will not with my pocket since the Penns are exactly doing the samething unfortunately.

I'm stunned that people are so surprised we are not a club coaches or players want to come to. The question is how is carty a "proven performer"?
He ain't
The stats confirm that
Only the Penns will tell you otherwise based on the cost, which they inflicted upon themselves with this 'rookie coach' experiment they sought as a cost saving exercise, and had they kept Tooves at coach, would have generated more $$$ at home games with possibly a way more MANY DNA spirited team (of which I haven't really seen any Manly DNA demonstrated by the Penns recently so they probably have no idea why this would be so imortant)/
Only solution, with Madge now refusing to come to our Fawlty Towers mess of a club would be for the Penns and Lyall to literally SWALLOW some pride and get Des and/or Tooves back (WHO EVERY MEMBER UNDERSTANDS IS WILLING AND AVAILABLE!!!!)
Just remember to gargle!

I agree but the problem is Penn expects to lump incoming coach with carty and ferris. Coaches these day's expect to be able to appoint their assistants and trainer but not at Manly Penn seems to want to dictate it and tat's why we are getting Carty as coach. I'm stunned for a so called successful business man he doesn't seem to learn he tries to nickel and dime every situation and people won't tolerate it. I fear for our future I'm really struggling to see how this works you can have lower prices cheaper food even free tickets but members aren't going to wear Carty.

No chance I’m going to be parting with a single dollar next season... regardless of how much Penn and co slash membership/entry prices. Obviously, the headline regarding Madge wanting his own people is on the money because he’s been negotiating for weeks and already knew what facilities the club has available. We are a joke... not even prepared to fork out on a professional coaching team. If Carty is the proven performer Scotty promised us, then stick a fork in Mr Penn and our season.
