But the Sea Eagles face a salary cap squeeze over the next few years and his ability to command the $600,000-a-year which he was able to during his last negotiations seems unlikely.

“I might have to take unders,” Walker told AAP.

“That’s just the way football is. I haven’t had the best couple of months. I’m not saying it’s not deserved. But I just want to play football.

“Money’s not everything for me. Is my family happy? Am I happy? And where can I play my football? That’s what my decision comes down to.

“You can’t take too much of a pay cut. But when you’re taking unders, you make it doable.”

SEA Eagles skipper Daly Cherry-Evans has played a big role in the revitalisation of teammate Dylan Walker, who has emerged as a potent weapon at five-eighth in the countdown to the finals.

While the star halfback is renowned for doing “extras” before and after training to hone his skills, Walker has been joining him — and the benefits from those sessions are there for everyone to see.

“At first he just sort of hung around like an annoying smell,” Cherry-Evans joked.

“Then he started to ask if he could have a kick and can he borrow some of the footys and I begrudgingly gave him some.

“And now we just share them and we kick together.”

Ahead of tomorrow’s big game with the Raiders in Canberra Cherry-Evans said: “He wants to learn, he wants to improve and I feel as though he is contributing to the side really nicely.

“I honestly couldn’t tell you if that is his position long term, but as for right now he is playing really good football.”

WHOLE NEW GAME

WALKER revealed fiveeighth is a position he has always had his eye on, feeling it suited his dominant personality.

“I feel it’s a role you’ve to grow into and I feel like I’ve done that the last couple of years where I understand football a lot more and look at it in a different way,” he said.

“I enjoy my centre time but I feel this is a different challenge for me.

“Me and Chez (Cherry-Evans) are always talking about it and we stay back and practice kicking and even game plans.

“It’s like I’m learning a whole new game.”

Lucky he was set free before the new NRL Inquisition comes into effect.

NRL to introduce tough new penalties including match bans
Michael Carayannis, The Sunday Telegraph
August 25, 2019 12:00am

The NRL will introduce one of the most stringent player penalty regimes in world sport as it tries to rid the game of off-field scandals and crimes.

For the first time in the game’s history a comprehensive “punishment matrix” will ensure consistent punishment of players.

The NRL is in the final stages of producing the new policy, with The Sunday Telegraph obtaining the draft document, which has been shown to clubs in recent weeks.

Months in the making, the punishment matrix has been designed and pushed through by the Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) in the wake of a train wreck pre-season where rugby league was plagued by high profile player scandals.

The NRL’s Integrity unit will oversee the list of sins and their punishments, which cover a wide range of offences from sexual assault and domestic violence to public nuisance and revenge porn.

Any player found guilty of a sexual assault, armed robbery or a large commercial drug supply will automatically have their registration cancelled — effectively a ban from playing.

Other offences are grouped together, then placed in either low or high scales of seriousness and attract varying penalties.

“Low scale” offences are defined as being “low impact, low harm and small scale”, while “high scale” crimes are described as being of “high impact, significant impact and large scale”.

Some of the key punishments include:

■ Domestic violence or common assault charges face a minimum automatic five game ban and a fine of three per cent of a player salary. On the high scale that penalty jumps to a minimum seven game ban and 10 per cent salary fine

■ Common assault and affray is at least a two game ban and fine of three per cent of a contract.

■ Sharing lewd content without consent will result in an automatic five game ban.

■ A player will be suspended for at least three matches for any private property damage.

■ Each high scale sanction carries a maximum penalty of a player being deregistered or a 12 match ban and fine of 25 per cent of their salary.

“It is going through a consultation phase with the RLPA and clubs to ensure broad agreement,” the spokesman said. “The matrix will set the standards for sanctions about off field incidents going forward and ensure consistency.”
Grand Inquisitor Beattie and Cardinal Greenberg said in a joint statement that torture would be only used with a sense of compassion and burning at the stake would probably benefit some players in the long term.

The draft does not reference the current Stand Down Policy.

Walker was out for 9 weeks once he was charged.@

NRL have just 2 weeks before the inevitable Mad Monday antics revisit the headlines :tmi:

Our spine is humming
Should Manly go on to win the GF it will basically be because Des made a tactical decision to restructure our spine, some 6 or so games ago .
Even before Cust got injured he must have seen our spine was lacking, even with Elgey, Crocker and Hodgk waiting in the wings.

Why did he settle on Walkz as his replacement then.?
Tried under Barrett and publicly crucified for the woes of a failed season
Surely he knew Barrett had been there done that ?
Whatever Des thinks he obviously see’s in Walkz what Barrett, Fox media and most of us couldn’t

I dont see it that way .
Walker was not Des first choice at 5/8 as he tried all the others before him Elgey , Croker , Cust
The reason Walker is playing 5/8 is simply because the others did not deliver .
Whilst Walker is filling in the 5/8 position admirably The fact is Walkers prime position is centre . That is the position we was crowned centre of the year .

Maybe, maybe not.

I would love a journo to actually ask Des if Dylan's move to 5/8 is permanent or temporary. I'm surprised it hasn't been asked already (unless I've missed something).
