Club announcement - Matai & Stewart to Retire

But why do the RLPA give a ****? The boys will get paid money owing. The ones that are fuceked are the team, the club and the fans aren't they?
Club may oblige them to play.

They won't hand over hundreds of thousands to a player if they don't get the Cap relief.

The odds of the club requiring them to play without a medical release from their surgeons saying they are fit enough to resume playing would be about 20,000,000 to 1.

and if they had that this thread wouldn't exist.

Matai defamation result

RETIRING Manly centre Steve Matai has settled a defamation payout of almost $50,000 from Channel 7 over a report last year that wrongly stated he had his mobile phone confiscated by federal police as part of match-fixing investigations. The network also had to pay Matai’s legal costs.
only $50,000 .... if all defamed players start suing the f***ers might be more selective in writing crap

I would really like to see a final resolution to this saga before round 1. If the NRL say no, then the club pays them out and celebrates their careers and gives the fans a chance to say goodbye.

It is fair to give this new team a fresh start without the baggage of this saga.

The whole salary cap and injury retirement processes needs an urgent review as you cant have a rule for one player and another rule for another about whether an injury is a new one or an old one.

The players bust their guts for years and they need to be protected in retirement and the clubs need to be rewarded rather than punished for encouraging players to stay their whole careers at one club.

The NRL in their desire to equalize the competition have failed miserably! Do you ever see the Drizzle or the Donkeys in the bottom 4? Nah dont think so. The way football is scheduled indicates that it is far from a level playing field.

Snake and Skivvy deserve their money and a happy retirement. As hard as it is on the club, we need to move on for the sake of this team!

Can Penn not just pay Snake and Skivvi for the final year out of his own funds and we all move on?
Or is it money above Manly legends with the Penn family? For me that is the real question here.

They need to be paid from the Cap allocation if the NRL reject the medical grounds - that's the problem.

Neither player is disadvantaged financially, but Manly end up with a reduced headcount and reduced Cap to spend on the squad 😡

Greenturd rubber stamped Choc's medical and allowed Parra to clear the Cap overspend - convenient and corrupt

I suppose the rlpa represents all players. No cap relief is bad because that means manly can't pay those funds to other players.

Surely ifthey retire effective immediately then there is no cap issue. The only issue currently is Penns not wanting to be out of pocket. If both sides agree to tear up the contract ( through a private settlement) then what is left to be on the 2017 cap?
Many players retire early. In my opinion he Penns need to man up and pay these two legends out.

But can't you see, Mr Fluffy wants the NRL to pay them out, not affecting the cap AND then having another 1.4 million to spend.

Nice if it happens BUT Mr Fluffy and his minions signed , what I thought at the time, were quite ridiculous extensions and it's now coming home to roost.

It's also about to happen with the Knights offering a 33 year old old Matt Scott $900k a year for 3 years ( from 2018) , an absolutely stupid decision.

$900k for one year with a one year extension subject to medical clearance " maybe".

I think this could well set the pattern for signing older players to long term contracts in the future.

Agreed, I still remember him tweeting something like 'customs did take his phone...so game on!!!' (after Matai denied it) but as per the usual low standard of 'sports journalism' in this country...I can't see anything on his twitter feed now his useless organisation and he himself have been shown to be **** knuckles.

No wonder sites the 'the roar' exist.

Unfortunately it doesn't work that way. The players are counted under the cap as a contract was registered with the NRL for those players for the 2017 season. If those players can't play due to injury and decide to retire, unless the NRL signs off on their medical retirement clearance, they will be included under our cap - whether they play or not.

The NRL will want to be satisfied that the injuries are new injuries that will not allow them to see out their contracts, not pre-existing injuries that were present when they signed their current contracts.

I agree it is stupid, if they genuinely can't play, then they can't play and should not count under the cap. It isn't like we want cap relief for this year and they will play with us again in 2018.

While there is a contract yes. However if both parties agree to walk away then there is no contract. Nothing can count on the cap. Its only a sticking point because Penn wont fork up the money.

Mate, you would be adding a charge of wilfull and deliberate salary cap rorting ... and I am sure we (unlike Parra) wouldn't be tickled with a feather.

You can't say I paid snake $700,000 but "no sir, it wasn't for playing football, it was because he has promised to mow my lawn""

And where does this notion that the Penn's won't fork out the money come from? They will pay Snake and Matai exactly what the clause in there contract under "in the event of injury" requires them to pay. This would probably be a continuation of their monthly instalments rather than a lump sum.

The Penn's are simply trying to activate the Insurance cover to be reimbursed. These payments whether from the Penn's or the Insurance company form part of our 2017 salary cap, the only way that can change is if the NRL give us relief.

None of which has any bloody thing to do with snake or Matai or how much they will get paid.
