There is nothing more inspiring personally, than a flawed character who screws up and has to battle through their own guilt or shame to shine. It’s an incredibly challenging path and nowhere as simple or easy as the narrative would have us believe. Let’s hope Schu is inspired to wear that narrative and inspire many.

And I’m not suggesting Brett had made that sort of screw up in his life. As we saw, he appeared to be screwed by some dodgy people and suffered unfairly for it… but his ability to bounce back is what I love and bow down to.

C’mon Schu… rise above all this BS and prove a point to the world. We are all here hoping and wishing you the best

Excellent news on Brett, isn't he our backs coach. Would love to have Gift on board as well doing something with our forwards, he was such a skilful player.

Geez, people knocking the cops for actually enforcing the law. Give yourself an uppercut you bunch "lovely people". If Brett is dumb enough to get on the nose beers then he can get the help he needs. At least he's got the gumption & dignity to say he's wrong and cop the (almost non existent) punishment.

Not going to defend this situation, but there are many judges in this world who do things I would find more offensive than this.
I mean Stewart has always had a great respect as a decent human being to those around him and although getting caught with this is not his best moment, it's not like the drugs made him go crazy at a pub or physically abuse someone and if the cops didn't find it on him....would just be another day of Brett Stewart waving back at fans and minding his own business.

I just think it's odd that the cops allegedly witness Stewart purchase the drugs in the car, and pursued him rather than the drug dealer..
Plenty of possible reasons. Have you considered that the coppers might have been on foot and unable to give chase? Perhaps they didn't get the number plate? Maybe they even pulled the car over up the road and there weren't any drugs left to find. Who knows?

The point is B. Stewart did the wrong thing. Just like drink drivers do every day. Take your medicine and get over it. It's pretty weak to have a go at the coppers for doing their job though.

So far as I know he didn't say he was wrong. He pleaded guilty to having a prohibited drug in his possession. Does he think that's wrong? Some people do, many don't.
It's not hard to research the history of why substances are made illegal from time to time, and they don't always stay illegal. Not to mention there are very sound reasons for decriminalising drugs in general.

Allot of people on here see themselves as some kind of jesus and have never sinned. Brett is a type 1 diabetic so it's probably healthier for him than drinking booze, which all the puritans that are shaming him would of course also never partake in... right?

Magic mushrooms are illegal.
They are not addictive, in fact usage leads to a sense of fulfilment. Good stats about helping people get off addictive substances.
They are not poisonous. They don't have a lethal dose ld50. So you can't overdose regardless of how many you take.
They don't lead to useing other drugs ( alcohol IS the real gateway drug)

Danny W in the Sun-Herald:

There is a sad truth when it comes to Brett Stewart – the “Prince of Brookvale” and one of the greatest players to pull on a boot for Manly.

The way his NRL journey panned out was anything but princely. In fact, he could be excused for not wanting to have played the game at all, had he known how things would play out.

That’s not a journalist musing. Those who know him best understand the pain he has been through and say that’s how he feels. The feeling has not subsided over time. He rarely talks publicly but said this when prompted by this column: “I love the game of rugby league, its people, the mates that I made and our team’s success but, sadly, my life was forever changed from the events of 2009.”

The events he refers to were traumatic. He was accused of sexual assault after Manly’s season launch. The claims were found to be baseless in 2010 when a jury found him not guilty of one charge of sexual assault and two charges of indecent assault.

I’ll never forget interviewing a teary Stewart surrounded by supporters at the end of the ordeal. It was tough dealing with a man who had had his life ripped apart by a false accusation. It stays with him to this day.

It has meant living a simple, low-profile life where he doesn’t have to deal with the stares of strangers. A world where football, his profile and that accusation didn’t exist would be worth everything to him.

Stewart has remained silent since he was again thrust into the headlines in March, after being found with cocaine in his possession on a night out. It was his doing, his decision, his fault. It is why he pleaded guilty in Manly Local Court on May 3.

But, at long last, he is taking steps towards living his life in a better way. He is doing things he should have done years ago. But he wasn’t in the right frame of mind to take those steps until recently.

He knows, with the help of medical professionals, it is time to take control of his life again.

“I’ve made some significant steps forward in my mental health, and that journey is just beginning,” he said.

In 2008, Stewart and Billy Slater were the faces of rugby league. Then Stewart’s life changed. Slater is now Queensland coach and a commentary star for the Nine Network.

Stewart has a part-time specialist coaching role at Manly. He hates the cameras and attention, but he was prepared to offer me a few thoughts. He hates the glaring eyes and what people may think of him.

He won premierships with Manly in 2008 and 2011, scoring 163 tries in just 233 NRL games, but mud sticks. Stewart could be one of the game’s best coaches, but we may never know his ability.

Hopefully, by taking control of his health and his life, we may see him evolve in the next phase of his career, perhaps even as a head coach.

I know Danny Weidler is a dribbler, but he was as close to steadfast as a journalist can get during Snake's ordeal, even though he initially copped a lot of criticism for putting the focus on the accuser and her family. When others were joining the queue for the tar and feathers, he wasn't, and I'll always remember that.
