Should Hastings be given a go as a starting half in the NRL side?

Weidler’s column:

Discusses The Hastings drama, a stouch with some junior players with one quiting the side (doesn’t mention who) and the lack of comment from Gorman.

Obviously doesn’t miss the club with the article.

Anyone know who the junior player is?

This link might work better as the SMH is behind their paywall

To be fair, from all the interactions/ interviews I have seen with him he appears articulate and generally says all the right things....the issue appeared s to be when he is out of the spotlight

Reading the Telegraph article by rothfield leads me to believe that TBaz has jumped the gun in dropping Hastings. If DCE and Hastings have already kissed and made up, well it kinda leaves TBaz on the outer.
Machiavellian power play by DCE, whom I'm told wants to reprise the Captain Coach role of days gone by. By embracing Hastings he leaves Baz swinging in the breeze, all he needs then is to engineer another couple of losses and the position vacant sign goes up on Baz's job.

I honestly think that DCE was probably pranking Hastings thinking that it would make him fit in. It back fired when Hastings took offence and made DCE look like a prick. They've kissed and made up. TB left standing with his pants down.

If it's true Jacko is on 340k for this season it's not hard to understand why we have salary cap issues even before the blow up it seems way overs.
Apparently it was 100 K last season and the reported 340 K this season to make it the aggregate 220 K per season , so on the bright side and if he is moved on , that will be 220 K available to either assist to upgrade and retain some existing players off contract and where the preference is to keep them or to help in going after a half who is of a regular good standard and who can fit in with out mainly causing some regular disruption .

Having been insecure and a bit of a loner when I was younger, I can identify with much of what young Hastings is saying. When you feel a bit of an outsider, its difficult to interpret the motivations of others. Because you are insecure, its easy to misread actions, such as pranks, which can mean you arent well respected but can also mean you're liked and being included in the fun. I may be wrong but what I'm reading is a serious young man, polite, trying to fit in, but with a serious lack of sense of humour and understanding about what the humour implies, a byproduct of being socially insecure with poor self confidence. He's only a kid, and I suspect he's easily hurt. He doesnt seem to be a bad person, otherwise it would reflect in his behaviour away from the game, but he seems socially inept (and maybe if you'll excuse the Freudian cliche, interpreted early paternal rejection and an overly protecting mother). He's probably not intending to be disrespectful, but lashes out when he thinks he's being put down. He doesnt know how to laugh at himself, and share that with others.

So what Barrett did is understandable, if in the heat of yet another misunderstood confrontation, he's had to protect his players. Its also positive of the players to invite Hstings to the dinner and for DCE to embrace him. That's what the kid needs. An ongoing overt sense of acceptance

High profile sports people no doubt, will be high profile sports dickheads on occasions. We read about it all the time. They'll say all the right things in public but behind the scenes no doubt they are a lot of rabble rousers. I guess its part of the culture. I think many of the players who were angry with young Hastings for his reactions are now feeling a little guilty and regretful at their knee jerk reactions, and the consequential media and coach responses. I think DCE on reflection was right in saying it was a 'lovers tiff' in the sense that it was all done in the heat of the moment but on reflection it was an over reaction, and yes maybe an over reaction by a club that just doesnt want yet another bad PR call for the media to devour. They dont understand Hastings reactions to their pranks and Hastings doesnt understand it is all part of relationship building within the team structure.

I hope the players can understand Hastings a little better and give him a little less prank attention and more of the positive responses, because I think that's what he understands. He's a talented player, well worthy of first grade. He needs an ongoing mentor in the team who will cushion any misunderstandings. He needs to be less arrogant and reactionary, when he thinks he's being got at. But of course this may all be dependent upon what Barrett and Penn now decide. Do they want to continue to back a troubled but talented youngster or are they already ear marking his replacement. Maybe too late. I hope not. And of course this old Bear may be misinterpreting it all and projecting through the eyes of a once insecure lad.

There's a lot of gullible people here.

Maybe you are right, but then if you dont open your mind to all possibilities, your thoughts become atrophied and miopic. Not saying what I said is what has happened. Just saying I can read it as a potential. And if you had been a parole officer for 34 years dealing with literally thousands of people on a very personal level, you may appreciate that.

I have a more open mind than most mate and respect everyone's perspective for what it is, but in reality most lead a life without much exposure to the hard and fast facts of life.
If you live where I have for the last 15 years where most live day to day, you learn to disseminate fact from fiction real quick, or you get fooled all the time.

I would back my assessment of the info on this kid all the way.

To each their own.

You don’t live in Cromer?

Surely even Greenberg must almost feel sorry for us.

Some good comments here @Bearfax. It is often unfashionable to sail against a tirade if negativity, but when you present a clear and concise alternate view, some members of the mob mentality are intelligent enough to migrate their view across the centre line. They are the middle swing punters who ebb and flow between reality and story telling. In any case, this should never have developed into a situation where our loyal and faithful fans chose to put all their eggs in one basket, choosing Jacko bashing or Barrett/DCE bashing. The truth lies somewhere in the middle, and all involved need to take responsibility for their role in placing the club in a poor light. Like for crying out loud, with the NRL giving us such a hard time, did we really need this self inflicted PR disaster created by poor leadership and disunity.

I have lived in a multi cultural flat oriented location near Auburn for 30 years. I've working in the Sydney south west or in the gaols (all of them in Sydney) for more than that period. So suggesting I dont understand that perspective is inaccurate. I am also not suggesting that you dont have a point.

But if you think socio-economics is the major factor in emotional issues, then maybe you should live in a more diverse environment. The thing is we all at the fundamental level are like children, with facades (images we project to others), designed to gain acceptance within our social group. Tat is what is most important to us all. In time that facade becomes entrenched, but have you ever seen close friends communicating in a totally different sociao-economic enviroment. Suddenly the facade has adapted. You see them projecting a different image.

I've dealt with the poorest and the richest, the least known and among the most prominent, over a hundred different ethnic communities. At the fundamental level, they all have insecurites at some level. I've interviewed politicians, CEOs and indigenous women on The Block. When you touch a senstive area, the child comes out. They all can suffer, bawl their eyes out, struggle to understand. Its human nature.

But one thing is central to human behaviour. And that is we all want to gain accaptance in whatever social structure we are in, and yes that may involve conning, bull crapping, violence whatever. But, unless we have a serious psychiatric condition, we all want to belong. Hastings is no different. If you think he is intentionally trying to cause trouble to have himself kicked out, you're misreading it. He wants to belong, and he fears he is not being accepted and respected and is lashing out. Very normal human reaction. We all need to be accepted within the social structure we choose to belong to. He's chosen to be part of a rugby league social environment
