Manly relaxed over ASADA investigation

MANLY coach Geoff Toovey and captain Jamie Lyon last night each said they were "not worried" about the sudden escalation in the impact of ASADA's investigation into NRL drug use.

The Sea Eagles, one of six clubs mentioned the landmark report compiled by the Australian Crime Commission, beat Brisbane 22-14 in the hours immediately after Cronulla suspended or sacked five staff members in a draconian reaction to the controversy.

"There seems to be a fair bit of talk but we're not too worried about it," said centre Lyon after the only Friday night game of round one, which saw Steve Matai post two tries.

"We've got a job to do and we're just going to worry about what we've got to do. Big game next week and we'll just concentrate on that."

Advertisement Speaking on radio Triple M late last night, Toovey also said he was "not worried" about "speculation of allegations". "The sooner it is all sorted out, the better," he said.

Earlier, the coach told the post-match media conference: "Obviously we don't stick our heads in the sand. We knew about it.

"I think all football players are happy the season has kicked off so we can get on to concentrating on the good things.

"The players want to get on with it and they want whatever dramas there are off the field to be resolved as quickly as possible. That's all we can hope."

It was a disappointing commemoration of Brisbane's first premiership match, also against Manly, 25 years ago.

Visibly upset Broncos coach Anthony Griffin accused his men of "rolling over early in that second half" as the Eagles won their fifth game against Brisbane at Suncorp from the last five.

"We were very slow and they jumped us," he said. "Three tries, we gifted them that last one, and that was it."

Griffin said his men paid a "psychological price" when they "(gave) up that 14-6 lead so easily in the second half. That was the ball game."

Captain Sam Thaiday reckoned "we were pretty bad" and "we were too soft on ourselves". Griffin said "it's hard to be happy about anything".

Manly's Anthony Watmough again aggravated a rib injury and had an injection topped up in the second half. "The painkiller wore off ... there was no more damage and he was right to go back on," his coach said.

"It's going to take a while to repair but he had an outstanding game."

Toovey said the battle between centres Matai and Justin Hodges "ended up about even.

"But I thought our whole left edge was good. I think they were stacking our right side to come at the bloke next to me (Lyon).

"That did open up a bit of space for Steve Matai and Keiran Foran."

People in this day and age lack patience. A thorough investigation is what the game and Aussie sport deserves. Not to mention it is a criminal act for ASADA to name names unless they are pressing charges against individuals.

Would I be correct in saying this?

Manly were not using peptides supplied via Danks, all Danks did at manly was the calfs blood which was legal, DNA testing and GPS. Manlys supplements are provided by BSc and have been for years and administered by head strength and conditioning trainer Donny Singe. Stephen Danks had nothing to do with Manlys supplements, and the investigation is for 2011/12. Danks not even employed by manly then. So therefore manly = in the clear and no case to answer. ASADA were at Manly first weeks ago conduction investigations and found nothing.

Sound right?

Maybe.

In relation to stripping premierships you have to remember that the NRL ceo doesn't even know which players are under investigation. So the talk of premiership stripping is a rumours based on simple logic only. If a premiership winning club has systematically doped they will lose there title

Melbourne had there titles stripped quickly because they admitted guilt. Otherwise it would have dragged on.

A lot of the rumours are well thought through but not necessarily based on fact. ASADA didn't sack the coaching staff yesterday. That was Cronullas doing.

AND when this all blew up, David Perry was asked what time frame this related to and he said only the last couple of years. 2008 was not included in the investigation by asada.

Seems people talking about stripping the 2008 premiership are just stirring the pot.

No one knows what's going on yet so all this speculation is just that.

I'm sure there is something there for them to implicate us in it. How bad or deep....we won't know yet. Hopefully it's only minimal.

Whatever happened to people being presumed innocent until found guilty. ASADA seems to be a law unto itself. What is happening to Cronulla is outrageous. To stand down their coach is ridiculous.

Cronulla's board are the one standing down their coach. Not ASADA. ASADA is doing its job. They have not said a thing about specifics until they are confident they can back it up. Isn't that what Joe Blow down the street wants?

In my opinion the steps taken by Cronulla are knee-jerk reactions by the Board who have decided to sit on their helmets. I still believe it is unfair to request players to admit guilt to something it is highly doubtful they had any knowledge about and also insist the club is indemnified.

Far too many chicken little's in here.

Relax!

And all enjoy when the storm get stripped of their 3rd title! lol

All this gossip about stripped premierships isn't good, but the text message going around looks like it was started by a 14 year old.

The swipe at us in that Facebook link is unnecessary. If it is genuine then whatever sympathy I had was lost when she tried to deflect the situation onto us.

How can you believe anything that is tweeted or Facebagged, just remember how many people out there in fibro town hate manly, they will start any rumour to get under our skin.this whole performance thing is media fuelled speculation.BTW,i was raised in a houso estate in balgowlah heights so the silvertail crap dont wash with me.

I know the source isn't comforting, but Danny Wiener has just said that he spoke to Manly bosses and they said the rumour is false. He has also said that the manly player who was rumoured to have dobbed in the club is about to make a statement, also denying the claim.

This has to be the point where the political overtones are dropped

Not when it is reported today that the NRL CEO has approached Gillard asking that rugby league be treated the same as afl.

Obviously he wouldn't have approached Gillard if he didn't think/know that her government is behind this and therefore be able to help out.

Some of these rumours are getting very worrying!

I am worried that no-one has sent any of these rumours to me

It does say that he approached her after approaches made by the AFL. I doubt either will make the slightest bit of difference.

Interesting to see that it is the whistle-blower who once again cops the pain. As I said, the Sharkie' Board is just sitting on their helmets and hoping they survive. http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/nrl/years-of-service-end-in-devastation-for-sacked-cronulla-sharks-doctor-david-givney/story-e6frexnr-1226593578509
