Anthony Seibold - Manly coach. "Official"

Didn 't take that much notice but was quite impressed with Mick Potter's short term role with the Bull Dogs . Low key but seemed to have that side playing with much more purpose and improved general play . Not suggesting as Manly head coach but in an assistant role , could be good value . That is if Seibold is given the main gig but Hayles is apparently held in good steed and Monas obviously has some reasonable footy knowledge . Guess that it will be pretty clear mid next week or so of the final wash up .

May I ask... what would your reaction be if we won a wooden spoon (our first in 75+ of existence) with a new coach?

Would that not be a worse than what we have right now?

Or will it not matter because we'll at least have tried something different?

I'm curious to know.
Most of us on here have been Manly supporters for many decades, during that time we've been a leader and rugby league powerhouse, winning premierships in each of the past five decades, even the dismal years of the Northern Eagles embarrassment didn't stop us winning in the first decade of the new century, but since our last premiership in 2011 we've not climbed the heights of previous teams although 2013 was decided by Shane Haine and should have been ours, regardless of that we've since gone backwards at an alarming rate, Tooves was sacked not because he failed but because he voted against the Penns at board level and was a victim of payback rather than a results failure. Then came the disaster that was the Barrett years and then the second coming of Hasler, although Des took us to three grand finals, winning two, his second tenure at the helm has offered mixed results, in 2021 we rode the tsunami of success that was achieved through the most devastating display over a season by an individual player ever witnessed in the history of the game, take Tom Trbojevic out of that team and we genuinely struggle to make the eight let alone one game from the big dance. Unfortunately Des has shown since returning that the modern game is beyond his coaching abilities, we're too slow in both defence and attack and disorganised is the most appropriate adjective to describe what appears to be our game plan, we need a fresh approach and a modern era coach who can deliver it. Unfortunately Des Hasler is not that man imo. After being fed a diet of success for so long it's very difficult to swallow what's been dished up over the past seven years, rather than excuses I think we deserve results and a team that we know are coached to give 100% each and every game
My question is if Siebold coaches us what exactly would he do different with the same playing roster? Which is weaker in 2023.
We might actually have some structure in our defence instead of what we have now, any improvement would be appreciated

Yeah, if the reporting around this is right, Pen is upset that Des put all the blame on the club when he spoke to the media (and delivered a speech that was much praised at the time).

To some extent, I get that Des could have handled it better. I'm still disappointed that he gave the players a free pass for their bigotry and that it felt like we had to apologise for something we never should have had to apologise for in the first place. But anyone with even a passing knowledge of Des Hasler knew that he was always going to protect his players. It's one of his best attributes as a coach.

And no matter how you feel about the rainbow jersey events and how Des handled it all, the ONLY reason he and DCE addressed the media at the time was because of the total vacuum of leadership from the club's ownership and management. No one else was willing to stick their head up, and Des stepped in. So for Penn and others to take issue with that is unbelievably hypocritical.

Take issue with his coaching and the results of this season, sure. But don't take issue with him for trying to show some leadership when nobody else would.

The issue could be ... and this is purely speculation .. that reports that the Football dept was advised many months earlier are true , and if Dessie as head of the football dept, forgot, ignored or just didn't care enough to discuss it with the team ... then he is/was part of the fukkup.

Seibs sounds like a real fun guy to have around.
Not in the least bit boring at all.
Fmd imagine having a beer with guy, rugby league is one of the simplest games to explain but he has ****ed it.
Honestly this is what ended him at broncos over complicated talk.

He handled that very well , and shouldn’t be criticised for it !!

That’s not the issue that most on here have with Des.

I’d prefer a coach that is not aligned with either of them
Beats me why coaches need managers at all !!

I 100% understand the players having ( needing ) one , young guys , not much sense in the business world but when you get to coaching status you’re not exactly a numbnut.

All valid points.

But... we are (apparently) hiring a coach who all but secured the wooden spoon at the Broncos before quitting in his last stint as a head coach. Some here have made excuses for that already, which seems eerily similar to some at the Kennel when the Bulldogs announced Trent Barrett.

So, my hypothetical question was... Would Silvertails accept a wooden spoon over what we have right now?

So far, the answers have been:
1. We need change, ergo this is a good step
2. We won't win the spoon because our roster is too good for that

I'm not seeing any answer as to what the point of changing coach would be if we do not improve or win the wooden spoon, and what would Silvertails make of it...

Des is not much different from all reports. He loves his stats and structures. Has been accused of being overly analytical a few times. Some players warm to that, some hate it.

It’s baffling to me that some silvertails back Des to the hilt, have strong opinions on Penn, or other coach options, mestrov etc, to the point where an online petition is trotted out, and arguments ensue.

The only people who know what is going on aren’t here on silvertails. For me I think I’ll bow out of the chatter until the dust settles.
Better to remain silent and thought a fool , than opening your mouth and removing all doubt!

Just sayin’

Well he actually wasn't a wooden spoon coach, that was achieved after he left the joint, his demise was largely brought on by old heads at the club undermining him at every opportunity, I'm not suggesting he's a supercoach but I am saying that I believe he brings more to the table than Hasler with regards to the modern game, without change we stay where we've been for the past seven years, even 2021 wouldn't be something we can reminisce about had it not been for Turbo having the most extraordinary year of any player I can recall in my lifetime, as Manly supporters we deserve to see our team in the mix as it's always been, not scrounging around in the basement crossing our fingers against getting the spoon. Maybe Seibold isn't the answer but unless we try something different we're in for the same disappointment that has hung around our necks like an albatross since the demise of Tooves

Our decision making must remain firmly fixed on winning a premiership ... NOT on trying to avoid getting a spoon.

Being the only "old" club never to have gotten a spoon is a good brag ... but it doesn't pay the rent.

If you start making decisions on the basis that fear of failure is greater than your desire for success ..

Then we are truly Fukked ..
